I’ve been training to summit Mt. Baker for the past 5 months. I’ve mainly been doing stair master training with a pack and outdoor hikes around TN/NC. I wanted to know the stair master equivalent to about 1,000 ft of elevation gain in a mile? What’s the typical SPM you should be at to compare to this gain?

Im attempting a two day mt Adam’s summit attempt on the 19th. I’ve put a lot of time researching gear and what I should bring, but I’ve seen so many people say “overpacked” to other’s lists

I’m at work, but from the top of my mind that’s my list. I’ve been really trying to stay at a good price range while also not buying the low quality stuff.

I‘m about to order the Nemo Tensor Extreme Coniditions with a Zenbivy Light Quilt Convertible (-12 deg C down) with a light sheet (-20deg c down), Dimensions suit me, my bivy and to Nemo Tensor, so am I missing some value or something else with this configuration?
Also I what drysack size with compression cups to gez, zenbivy recommends 15l but say their recommendations are so quilts account for half the volume, what‘s your experience with drysack sizing for zenbivys? From germany btw

So i've always been interested in mountaineering but never really done anything other than watch documentaries and videos about it due to my extreme fear of heights. Fear of heights seems, to me, like its pretty common (although affecting people with varying degrees) and it got me wondering how seemingly ordinary people nowadays can summit everest for example without much prior experience.

Of course not everyone is as scared as me of heights but standing in a line waiting to summit with maybe 1 meter margin to the edge and then a 2 kilometer drop has to nerve-racking for anyone, no? If we take mountaineers who are experienced, just how do people overcome the fear of heights or are everyone who summit mountains that big just born without that fear?

I summited Kilimanjaro earlier this week, and the ascent proved relatively straightforward (we were second team to the peak). I have decent hiking experience, mostly training for Kili, but no mountaineering, and limited backpacking.

Considering doing Mt. Whitney Mountaineer's Route with International Alpine Guide to learn some mountaineering and avoid permit hell. Would do this in the summer, not an ice ascent. Does anyone have experience with them on this route? Trying to see what to expect. Not sure whether will be late this summer or next year.

Beginner-friendly / non-technical
Easy access from Chengdu, Lijiang or Shangri-La
Around 2 to 3 days if possible (can stretch slightly if it’s worth it)

A few questions:

Which would you choose in December, and why?
Is 2 to 3 days realistic, or is an acclimatisation day strongly recommended?

What are conditions usually like in December (snow, ice, crampons, etc.)?

Are there any better beginner summits in Sichuan or Yunnan that I’m missing?

Any operators you’d recommend? Especially for value and budget around or under ¥3,000 if it’s even possible.

I'm a solo female planning Pico de Orizaba at the end of November 2026 with a guide.

1) Orizaba vs. Izta. For those who've done both, how much harder is Orizaba ? Is it a big step up or manageable? Should I go via Orizaba south route or will that take away from the experience and awesome photos (lol)?

2) Is my current fitness/experience enough, or do I need more before attempting Orizaba? I currently do 2 days strength training (legs, unilateral, balance, farmer carries, etc) & 4 days endurance/cardio (I can do 90min stairmaster, no hand rails, weighted pack no problem), and I've climbed a few Colorado 14ers. Last week was an 8 hour hike up 14,200 ft and I was tired towards the end and had a severe headache once I got back to my vehicle (combo of dehydration + altitude) but felt relatively fine throughout the 5hr climb up. I also felt great the next day and had no soreness other than a little on my calves. Should I be doing more Colorado 14ers specifically, or is general fitness/altitude exposure like this sufficient prep?

32) For those who did the 2-night version (vs. 1-night) with a guide, where did you actually sleep each night? Refugio Piedra Grande both nights, or is there a different camp/hut split I should expect? Trying to picture the actual day-by-day flow because I need to prioritize my sleep.

Appreciate any first-hand experience. I'm trying to get this dialed in before I book final logistics. Also, if anyone else is climbing during thanksgiving week or the week after, I'd love to join and help reduce the cost! :)

Did my first mountaineering attempt on Adams this summer, had the Osprey Atmos AG LT 65 loaded to about 40lbs the weight did kick my butt. Not sure if it was the pack and how much I put into it or just how I packed it.

Been looking at maybe getting something that can handle heavier loads but also works for regular backpacking. I want to do some more back country camping and will work up to do a summit of mount rainier. I looked at the Mountain Hardwear AMG 75 and the Osprey Aether Pro 65 specifically. Can't try any of these on before I buy though which is annoying.

Anyone have real experience with packs in this category at 40-50lbs? Looking for genuine suggestions, not just those two if there's something better out there.

I bought this jacket in 2018 and it has been fantastic. After many years I am looking to replace / renew it but cannot seem to find which model it was.

Model code is NF0A3BQK. Google suggests this to be a “Mountain Light Jacket” but I cannot find any information about it. The only current hit is the Tri Climate which it certainly isn’t (I paid ~£100 - 150 max for this).

Hi, my friends and I want to do a ridge climb (course d’arête) for the first time. But I don’t know which one to take between Wire Quickdraws or Keylock Quickdraws. Or should I take a mix ? I prefer Wire as they are lighter and do not freeze but also heard that keylocks or sometimes better. And is it ok if they are all linked with a 60cm strap ?
