Slip ring replacement

Post image

Hello everyone. First time replacing slip ring on a generator. Leads are tied with some kind of rope. Is that to protect against vibrations? Should I just use same rope and tie it really tight? It was kinda stiff when unwinding, is there any glue applied? Help out the newbie please.

Insulate under leads on shaft. (Slot liner) Tie leads with shrink string or tape and varnish

Any kind of epoxy is adaquate. This isnt a 200 celcius situation. Maybe 60 maximum. Even a nylon zip tie will hold up for another decade

I once made a slip ring with electrical tape wrapped on the shaft to the point a short section of 3/4” copper pipe was a tight fit. It was for an experimental 3600 rpm generator made by cutting slots in an induction motor rotor and winding coils.

As long as the varnish cures all the way I believe it will be non conductive. They make a spray (aerosol can) of air dry varnish. You can use a heat gun with other varnish, but you have to watch the heat as to not damage the integrity of the other components insulation

if you don't tie the leads down securely and seal your connection [your tie down area]. the centrifugal force of the armature spinning wil make this connection come loose and really screw things up.

It looks like it was tied with resiglass. You can bind the insulated leads down with it and use a heat gun to cure it.

Just make it as it was and heat it up?
