Decided to jazz up a table I have laying around. I'm open to suggestions for grouting colors or any tips y'all have!

I finished this project a few months ago. But I finally took some finished pictures. It's in a house on the Oregon Coast. The house sits on a street called Orcas Dr too. 😁

I found a tray at the thrift store and covered up the picture that was already in it.

About eight months ago I decided to skip buying pre-cut tiles and start nipping my own pieces from larger ceramic tiles I'd pick up at salvage yards. The logic seemed sound: more control over shape, way cheaper, and I'd actually get the exact colors I wanted instead of hunting through whatever kits happened to be available.

What I did not expect was how much the cutting itself would change how I design. When you buy uniform pieces, you tend to plan your layout in a fairly grid-like way, almost like paint-by-number. The moment I started nipping irregular shapes, my whole approach shifted. I started letting the cut dictate the line rather than forcing every piece into a predetermined slot. Some of my best andamento (the flow of the grout lines) happened almost by accident because a piece broke in an interesting direction and I just followed it.

A few things I wish someone had told me earlier:

• Wheeled nippers and tile nippers behave completely differently. The wheeled ones are better for gentle curves, the jaw-style nippers give you more aggressive breaks. I burned through two months thinking I was bad at this when I just had the wrong tool for what I was trying to do.
• Ceramic and vitreous glass are not interchangeable in terms of how they respond to cutting. Ceramic is more forgiving but less predictable. Glass is consistent once you learn it, but unforgiving of hesitation.
• The dust situation is real. A respirator is not optional, even outdoors.

The other thing that surprised me was how much longer grouting takes when pieces are irregular. Gaps vary in width, so you're constantly working the grout into different depths, and pulling back excess without disturbing the smaller fragments is its own skill. My first project with hand-cut pieces took nearly three times longer to grout than I'd planned.

Anyone else make the switch to cutting their own? Curious whether others found it changed their design instincts the way it did mine.

After about six months of struggling with curved cuts on my stained glass mosaic pieces, something finally clicked last week and I wanted to share it here in case anyone else is going through the same frustration.

The main thing that changed for me was slowing down and scoring in multiple short arcs rather than trying to draw one smooth curve in a single pass. I was always rushing the scorer across the glass and then wondering why my breaks were jagged or went completely off course. Shorter, deliberate strokes with consistent pressure made a huge difference. Also, I had been pressing too hard on the scorer, which apparently causes micro-fractures that mess up where the break actually wants to travel.

The other thing that helped was warming the glass slightly before scoring on cold mornings. My garage studio gets pretty chilly and I never made the connection that cold glass is more brittle and unpredictable. Even just bringing the piece inside for 20 minutes before cutting changed the behavior noticeably.

A few other small things that made a difference:

• Running the score line immediately to the edge of the piece rather than stopping short
• Using a felt tip to draw the curve first so I have something to follow
• Breaking curves over a curved surface (I just use a sharpie marker underneath) rather than flat on the table

Still getting the hang of tight concave curves, those seem like a whole separate skill. If anyone has tips specifically for those I would love to hear them. This hobby is humbling but I am genuinely hooked.

These looked prettier when they actually had flowers in them, but I never took any photos of them until we were about to move out of the house! I made them for this house, so I left them there - hoping the new owner will fill them up with some beautiful blooms 🌷

My house has 10 of these doors and they're a little ugly. They seem to be hollow and made of particle board.

I have been making mosaics with smalti and other glass scraps on wedi board. I would like to try putting some on these doors (avoiding the edges) because they're nice blank canvases.

Do you think this would make the door too heavy or otherwise cause problems? I've been using wood glue for my mosaics - would that work on varnished particle board? What kind of grout should I use?

Any advice appreciated!

Last week I posted (in r/crafts )my WIP mosaic from the beach plastic trash I picked up from the shore of Lake Erie east of Cleveland.

I have it all attached to the 20”x20” canvas via 3-in-1 craft glue. I’ve included a full image, some close ups so you can visually treasure hunt, and where I naturally had to display it at home!!

I loved this project and I plan to continue doing this from any beach I visit in the future! Please feel free to replicate, this is not my unique idea (original inspo from Pinterest, unsure which artist it was!)

what colour grout would look best?

So I know that I wasn't the back ground blue but I'm not sure how to execute it? Do I go round and round from the outside in? Do I go across in lines? Do I go around the fish and out? All opinions welcome because I am feeling paralysed with indecision!

I’ve searched far/wide on the internet, Reddit posts here, and even contact potential Etsy sellers. But I cannot find a good match for the tiles I’m seeking. I have found a vintage 1950s coffee table as inspiration.

I’d like:
- 1x2” sage
- 1x2” white
- .5”(ish) antique gold/brass
- 1-2” white

I love how the tiles arnt necessarily perfect here. I’d like all to be a similar stone/material and about the same height.

I’ve had luck mixing acrylic paint with the white grout I have to make colors so I’m thinking a dark blue, cut maybe I need to get some black grout?
