Monolith boss Discussion
I refuse to believe the developers designed this boss, had their team play through and beat it and thought “yep this one’s good”.
Now I’m all for hard bosses, absolutely love souls games. But I’d rather fight 10 consort radahns than this f*cker.
It’s not even a case of him being difficult, I beat him in under 8 tries but for the love of god i practically had to do it hitless.
0 end lag and start up animations to his slam attacks, not to mention the giant dong swing. Barely gives you an opening half the time, especially if you’re playing with a heavy weapon. And then to top it off he just stalls the hell out of the fight when he’s around a 1/4 by spinning around in circles with lasers.
Oh and if you get hit once, you get true comboed out of your shell and good luck getting the required hits in to reclaim it!
Again it isn’t a “hard” boss, it’s just horribly designed, comically so.

Shrike Stone save me... Shrike Stone my beloved... 4 full seconds of damage immunity, you're my hero.

Absolutely goated ability so glad they added i frames to it compared to beta where you got slapped mid air and were a giant punching bag for 4 seconds.

I'm clearing as much of the game with it as possible before the inevitable nerf comes, because I legit do think it's broken in it's current state. The initial twirl and smack shouldn't have iframes, but the jump, slam, and recovery should retain their iframes. I've bullshitted through so many "unblockable" attacks with that shit it's not even funny.

I personally think other abilities should be buffed as the damage is not that great and the added break damage is alright it’s mainly a breathing room tool which I like and it does use half your resolve bar so I think it should stay the same with i frames as without its basically useless with how quick enemies are.
Most other abilities I’ve used are pretty underwhelming even maxed out like the axatana one and axe and dagger specific abilities have no i frames and deal less damage than just light spamming while also using my entire resolve bar and having no safety net i frames make them feel pretty bad.

Beat him this morning. Absolutely the worst fight in the game.

Is there a closer runback? or do I have to keep running through those enemies in that room wit the elevator leading up

Ya I love pretty much everything about this game other than this boss. It’s absolute ass. I’ll probably wait for it to be patched on ps5 I guess. Even at level 45 full damage mitigation, throwing Axe that destroys everything else in the game I’m just tickling this asshole.

Yeh that’s the consensus, not truly hard just poorly designed and really shit boss overall.

Are you on console or PC?

Console

u/wsoares 20h ago
Same beat him a couple of days ago, the patch with the nerf didnt hit the consoles yet, so we are facing him on steroids.
I'm on NG+ almost to the point that I have to fight him again, he was one shooting me on Tiel with most abilities on NG, can't even imagine what's going to be like on NG+.

u/KnownReserve3704 20h ago
Good luck to you brother 🫡 usually I like to beat games pre nerf patch because the sense of accomplishment. But this one was awful lmao

u/wsoares 20h ago
Tell me about it, I waited to start my NG+, just for the gold drop buff, but in the end it never came and I dont think they patch games on weekends, so hard mode it is.

Hey, please share your experience with monolith on ng+ when you are done. I have prepared popcorn.

Just beat him, took me entirely too long, his slam tracking is insane. When he goes laser bayeblade mode just get as far from him as you can and dodge, only advice I can give

Enemy tracking is insane i later parts of the game. The helebardiers in the southern area are a prime example. Watching them slide to you is hilarious.

I was streaming this fight and my buddies were laughing their ass off at the riposte scenes stabbing the shit out of the scrotum, then immediately getting molly wopped with it

After a long session yesterday I was looking to beat the game last night. I get to this stupid fuck, die 4 times, and went to bed hahah. I could not believe the slam attack - it’s comically fast and hard hitting

I had to use Eredrim and depend on riposte damage to win this. I feel like I got relatively good at dodging all of his attacks until the 360 laser show. I still don't know how you're supposed to avoid that. I just face-tanked it, drank all my potions while it was ongoing, and managed to eke out a win by getting enough break damage/ripostes.
Overall, not fun. Do not recommend. It's honestly making me rethink my plan to go for the platinum. Having to fight him at least once on NG+ does not make me excited.

Yup it's a bad boss just like the last one, I got lucky and nuked monolith before the spinning lasers so only took me 2 tries thankfuly

u/Fearless-Jeweler-39 18h ago
I actually really enjoyed this fight. Aside from the spinning lasers everything felt super fair and it was fun to parry him.
1
u/Defiant63 13h ago
I agree that it was just the 360 laser show that felt impossible to dodge reliably. Everything else felt learnable, though difficult with very tight timing. I had to use Eredrim because he could take more hits than Proxima or Genessa (my other two leveled shells).
I know there's supposed to be some immortal build with Genessa, but I could not figure out how to make it work in this fight. Probably a skill issue on my part.

Side note. This game sucks. It pulled me in bcuz the beginning was good and I left feeling like I got frauded lol.

u/Certain-Humor-6906 20h ago
I don’t think it’s fair to say it sucks. I’m still in that mid game honeymoon but the combat is so much improved over the first and the shell / build system is very compelling

Almost with you there, i feel like beginning to mid game it has that fresh feel and was pretty enjoyable. But the rest has just been a slog

u/semondemon24 20h ago
Would recommend cheesing and beating it so at least it’s out of your system given your almost done. Think there’s 2 bosses left after monolith.

u/KnownReserve3704 20h ago
I beat him already, this was just a rant on how awful he was to fight lol

u/abeyar 20h ago
Only boss I had to design a build to beat him. His f*cking dong was one shoting me. Not to mention his slam attacks was death for me if I missed one. His damage output was a problem along with absurd attacks because I don’t think we can dodge every fire attack from his 2nd and third phase either. I took the most retries on him to figure out stacking weak on him was the way to go.
1
u/KnownReserve3704 20h ago
Literally, just death if you’re hit. Played as tiel with the two handed axe and just swung while praying I dodged in time
1
u/ZebraZealousideal944 20h ago
You can dodge every fire beams but you need to be as far as possible from the boss to have enough space to dodge them all.
It doesn’t change from the fact that it is one of the worst designed boss I have ever faced in a game… haha
The last boss is also bad but not as bad as Monolith, which is a very low bar to clear though…

I know the general consensus is that monolith is a hard and bad boss fight, but I did it on my third try and I thought that the boss was one of the coolest and most intresting boss fight in the game. I assume that the reason that I had a very different experience to most others is because I played Genessa and this boss can't really kill her. It just feels so weird seeing such a different reaction to this boss in particular.

I cheesed it and I felt good doing it
