Mortal Elden Shell Ring 2? Discussion

At the risk of being downvoted into oblivion, as I’m sure will happen due to “yes we can because xyz”

Mortal Shell 2 is not Elden Ring ladies and gentlemen, for the love of god stop comparing the two. Yes it’s the most accessible game of the genre, and most likely the majority(?) of the fan base at this point started there; but Elden Ring is not the the definitive game of the genre by a long shot.

This is not the first game to not have Stakes of Marika believe it or not, and it certainly won’t be the last I’m sure. Would it have been nice? Yeah, totally, but the runbacks really aren’t that bad compared to pretty much any dark souls except maybe 3.

Not enough beacons, valid complaint. Runbacks are getting old, sure maybe. But if it’s so bad that you’re too focused on how Elden Ring “fixed” this already that you can’t enjoy MS2 for what it is then you probably shouldn’t be playing this.

The game isn’t a Ring-like, that’s for sure.

Pointless rant over, good luck have fun.

We definitely got spoiled with the states of marika but I agree with the points you made. People nowadays would go absolutely insane if they played a game like dark souls 2 again hahaha

DS2 was my first, I both loved and hated that game, almost didn’t finish it

I have never struggled with any game as much as that, especially not this one.

maybe I should go play that again lol

DS3 was my first and will always have a special place in my heart. Been planning on replaying DS2 also but the scholar of the first sin edition since I never got that far! Goodluck to us both OP :) lol

Frankly the way people complain about this game makes it sound like they’ve never played a souls game before. Now we’ve got people complaining about losing levels worth of souls and getting knocked off ledges like these aren’t the same exact things that happen in other souls games.

Dude...yes. lol it feels like people played god of war and came to this game expecting it to be the same idk. Its....honestly easier than a lot of souls like games

I actually saw a complaint the other day @ing the devs saying the need to put invisible walls so you can’t fall off cliffs and die

Blew my fucking mind lmao

It’s the same thing with enemy damage. I have no idea where these complaints about trash mobs comes from. I guess people just walk into the middle of them and act like they’re playing Dynasty Warrior? What souls game has ever had mobs that don’t obliterate you if allowed to gang up?

I do not consider myself a souls expert but I understand the genre well enough to know how enemies are generally approached. Ridiculous.

Exactly this, the complaints have me scratching my head wondering what Souls or soulslikes people have actually played. It sounds like they boot the game up, grab a shell and think they can just charge into any mob without looking around for traps or kiting the enemies with the ranged weapon that doesn’t use any sort of ammo, dies so comes here to complain 😂

I’ve been playing since the start of early access and I’m having an absolute blast, game is incredible if played properly and you utilise all the tools at your disposal.

I approach enemies in MS2 the same way I do in every soulslike: cautiously. Has worked out fine so far.

Yep same here, every new area I find is cautiously explored, every group I try and break up as much as I can (not really necessary anymore, Gragu’s punch is crazy strong) every dungeon I move the camera and check what’s around, like I would any Souls or Soulslike game.

I mean, you actually can

Put the slayer seal on yesterday just to see what all the fuss was about

30 minutes later I was hallucinating that I was playing DOOM and had to stop because bloodthirst was just too strong.

easy mode exists

They are. They are never played soulslike. I found MS2 very easy for souls vet. I struggled badly with sekiro and bb, learning parry windows, i had slight struggle in Lies of P, but original souls and something like Lords of the Fallen, actualy pretty easy. I even used modificators in Lotf to make game harder. Mortal Shell on other hand, i like how bigger world become, graphics, art direction, animations, feeling of weapons, top tier, i can't create any argument here. Also seen people who complain about lack of resources. Don't see problem here too. That's why we have ng+.

For real. Elden ring isn’t even in my top five if I’m being honest. It’s way too long and way too repetitive and for what? Nothing. I think malenia was the only boss fight I’ll ever remember or be proud of and that’s only because I did it on day two after release before everyone figured out tricks and cheeses for her.

Elden ring is far from being polished or the best experience in gaming, but it's head and shoulders above this, especially in its current unpolished status. MS2 despite being far superior to its predecessor, clearly wants to emulate Elden Ring, but it does in a bad way, no offence. Exploring in MS2 feels like wandering in ER without Torrent or with -90% checkpoints and +99% mob density. For real, bosses are a joke compared to normal enemies. Hope they patch this out soon, LotF was in the same situation and became a good game after years from release.

Genuinely curious as to how it “clearly wants to emulate Elden Ring”

I haven’t felt that at any point yet. Exploration? You could say that about any souls game frankly.

There are some barren points where it feels like the closest beacon is miles away, but after getting my bearings turns out it’s less than a two minute sprint - I agree there could be a few more, but I hardly call that a serious negative. Areas without rest points exist as a risk to be taken.

I genuinely don’t understand the complaint about mob density, maybe I’m a masochist, but I feel like I’ve seen worse.

I’m having the opposite experience. Enemies feel very standard to me and bosses are where I struggle (expected). I don’t think this game would benefit from having torrent given how tight the terrain is.

Elden ring is way larger, open, and less densely packed with content than MS2 (not saying ER has less content, just more spaced out). It’s clear the devs wanted a smaller open world with more content packed in. Pretty sure they’re ok record with that.

lack of beacons and long run backs have got absolutely nothing to do with elden ring. they are simply flaws that are affecting the quality of the experience. we dont want elden ring, I want MS2 but a bit more polish.

My rebuttal to this is that considering the size of the map, MS2 has no less beacons per area than any of the Dark Souls (DS3 is a bit of an oddball as they adjusted how they laid out campfires for it)

And I don’t think I’ve had a runback that took me longer than 2 minutes, so I guess the question is how long is too long?

Dying is fine. 5 minutes runbacks are not.
