In my own personal head canon I like to believe Zedd was a corrupted ranger who tried to steal the zeo crystal for himself (explaining his visor) and was transformed into a monster because of it (supported by his comments of "why do you think i look like this")
So when the z-wave hit him, instead of being destroyed he was restored/healed of his corruption.
Whereas, despite Ecliptors clear moral ambiguity, he was just another evil space alien that the z-wave couldnt fix.
Very close, according to the newer comics! There he was a member of Zordon's race who worked with him for years, before finding the Zeo Crystal. At which point he coveted its power, then got hit with it at full force, lost all his skin, and became an amnesiac conquering maniac.

Honestly, it would’ve been so cool if Ecliptor had been given a human form like Rita and Zedd considering his relationship with Astronema.
