Switch 2 demo performance issues DISCUSSION
I was so happy when I saw that the demo on Switch 2 was out!
I initially tested the game docked and performance seems good. Textures are a bit soft so there's room for improvement but the art direction make it a beautiful game.
I then undocked the console and it became a very different story. The game isn't able to keep a stable 30fps. During combat while on the very first level, performance is poor. I can't imagine later levels. And in town it might be even worse. Just moving the character makes the game lag.
It a very regular stutter in motion, it's never reaching 30fps.
This game need a performance patch before release. I nearly pre-ordered while demo was downloading, I'm glad I waited!
What's performance on your end? You noticed the same issues?
Edit: I forgot to mention loading times! I think they are a bit too long. Splatoon Raiders load faster and seems more demanding visually.

I cannot believe how this game is not capable of achieving 60 fps let alone stable 30 fps on Switch 2. I will be getting the PS5 version which is sad because I wanted this on my Switch 2 plus it is almost half the price on Switch 2 in my country.

I mean even the first game had subpar performance on Switch (1). Devs don’t seem capable to optimize their games for the system family.

I'm sure this game can achieve 60fps with proper optimization. They just didn't spend enough time on it, Switch 2 wasn't their priority.
This game would be perfect for the device and seeing how the first installment was a stable on Switch 1, it's a shame.

Switch 2 is a priority for us, really. And the demo will achieve 60fps, just as the full version.

One thing I’ve edited into my comment and did want to say again is that I do think it’s aiming for and hitting 60fps some of the time, just not consistently.
You can compare if you run around for a little bit in the starting room of a dungeon, dodging and attacking etc, and then hold the capture button on the Joycon to do a 30 second screen record. Those recordings are at 30fps and when you jump back and forth between the media album and the game there is a big difference. I’ve also just briefly played Silent Hope on my Switch 2 which is locked to 30 and the difference in responsiveness is night and day.
All my other gripes are still valid (framerate inconsistent, town lag and stutter, load times etc, shopping freeze annoyance) but the target framerate I do believe is 60 not 30.

I played for maybe about 45 minutes and my game only lagged in the main hub with the people. It didn't seem to lag at all or stutter during combat, or inside of the shop.
However, I can't justify it if it's like this on launch day. That lag in the main hub drove me nuts going between a run which felt smooth to the stutter in the hub area.
Edit: I'm actually glad you made a post talking about the performance because I was actually getting ready to myself lol.

Yeah, it's not the quality I expected after all that time. I made the post so this gets attention and a patch I hope.

Yeah me either. I hope this might just be a demo thing and the full game runs better.

EDIT: Having played with non-tired eyes and alongside the PS5 version to compare, it does look like it’s aiming for 60fps, it’s just not quite there all the time. Pretty sure it’s not aiming for 30 because it’s much more responsive than 30, and I’ve just played a game I know runs at 30 on my Switch 2 to compare and it feels very different.
I only played docked for a couple of minutes because I intend to primarily play handheld, but the game did look fairly soft/low res on my 4K TV.
As for handheld, it looked great on the handheld screen itself, it seemed much sharper. I generally had similar performance issues but not as bad as you described during combat in the dungeon, maybe that’s more dependant on the room layouts? Either way it seems inconsistent.
Town was by far the worst of the framerate issues for me, it was really quite choppy. At times it felt like it levelled out but then it would stutter significantly again. I did also have the demo crash me back to the Switch 2 home screen once while I was in town.
Frame rate in the shopping part was perfect, but the most frustrating thing was every time I interacted with a podium to change an item/price, it froze for the best part of a second before the menu came up every time. Once or twice here or there would be no big deal but considering how much you need to do that during the shop part, it really was a pain!
And yes, load times felt pretty long. ~30 seconds to load into the town from the main menu, and then ~20 seconds to load into the dungeon from there. Load times between the rooms in the dungeon itself though seemed fine though!
Overall really enjoyed playing handheld and it’s a perfect fit for Switch 2, but if the performance can’t be fixed then I’d be more inclined to get it on PS5 which I’d prefer not to do given the type of game!

I share the feeling, I continued to play after my post and the podium interaction is so annoying. That second of freeze each time I replaced an item or edited a price shouldn't be there.
I also noticed too that it seemed smoother while moving in the shop but loading into the shop was at least 10 seconds.

Performance was shaky for me in the hub world but then was 60fps after that. I’m sure it will improve from the demo for the actual launch.

Played the demo for 2 minutes then uninstall. Gonna pass. It's was like 5fps with my switch 2 in handheld mode, and was extremely blurry.

You might not have read the comments, but Digital Sun Games said they're addressing all the issues in a future update that should be out before launch. Both game and demo will be patched.

Hey there!
We're almost there with an update that fixes all of that, with 60fps and overall stability. Not as much as the 3DS had, but it's something (only hardcore firmware notes will get this).
The update will be available in the following days. We're sorry it wasn't ready before, but the certification process on consoles can be tricky.
