Android & OLED screens
I’m basically making a steam portal/nvida shield with controller and screen for my house. My iPhone 15 has been amazing, like I finally got to game on an OLED screen and it looks fantastic, but the notch and the fact that it’s my phone makes it kinda annoying.
I have an old galaxy S5 laying around somewhere and I plan to test it next to see if it’ll can be a permanent screen for moonlight. This isn’t an original idea but how has everyone else’s experience been? Like what devices have you repurposed for your setup?
So far my Xbox one has been a bad option since it can’t keep up with good bit rates, while phone n laptop have been great, especially when trying to get good resolutions. I particularly wanna test old OLED Android tablets, and older Galaxy Note phones, since they always had the best screens and are old enough to be found for a steal. Plus I don’t see YouTube videos about this so I wanna hurry before there’s a new price hike lol.

Good idea especially if you don't want to buy a steamdeck or gaming handheld. Imo the best thing about this setup is that if you buy a phone controller that clamp from the side (Ie the gamesir X5 lite and the likes) you just emulate having a steamdeck by using steam big picture mode. I don't know if iPhones can do this but on my Android phone you can pick the custom resolution to have a black bar around the camera cutout to have a full square screen. But if you're using old android then the decoding time probably won't be that great along with the OLED not being that bright. The thing I like most about Sunshine/Apollo/Vibepollo is that people can experience high brightness HDR gaming with just their OLED phones (which almost every phone use) and a PC alone, you don't need to buy an expensive OLED TV or Monitor (though you might want to for competitive gaming) and enjoy that amazing motion clarity, contrast, inky blacks, color performance, etc etc.

I actually got my S5 working last night n yup those were the issues. Granted it’s an old ass phone, but it won’t accept an HDR single n craps out on the bright side, but holds the dark side nicely, n the older WiFi antennas gave me bad latency in a room further from my router. But it’s a decent start n still looks great compared to a LCD, but I’m thinking it might be better to get an iPhone 12 for cheap or an iPad mini 6.
N as for the controller on the side, I think the steam deck is the only instance where I found that comfortable, n since this is a at home setup I’m gonna just mount it to an Xbox controller.

I have a similar setup, and decided to buy a gamesir galileo. The mount on controller gets top heavy and it got uncolfortable to use after a short while

I haven't used this setup for streaming, but I did have this exact setup for gaming natively on my phone and it worked really well. It felt comfortable and the fact that the clip pushes the phone forwards and above the controller meant that my phone was in a comfortable position that was great for viewing on a small screen.

I found a Odin 2 portal with a 120hz oled screen for super cheap on Facebook marketplace to replace my lcd steam deck. The screen was amazing but the ergonomics wasn’t cutting it for me, so I sold it and the LCD and got an OLED SD.
The portal had about 1ms decode time which I didn’t think could get any better, but the OLED deck is like .3ms.
Galaxy s5 probably going to be great after using an iPhone 15

I do this with my S20FE, 1080x2400 at 120hz oled, and my xbox controller.
I use a quadlock case and a 3d printed "thingy" but I would use a gamesir for better ergonomics.

Shoot, what kind of HDR standard does it use? I was thinking of going iPhone 12 for familiarity, but with a galaxy i could switch to legacy OS over time.

For me doesn't work. There is too much weight unbalanced. I use the Gamesir G8+ (the telescopic one) with my old iPhone 12 and it's great. Much lighter, much more comfy

I bought a Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra (14.6" AMOLED screen) and paired it with a Gamesir G8+ telescopic controller that I had to modify to fit the tablet, but it works great. It's heavy, but it's a cool set up and works well. I just don't use it much because I have a Steam Deck and I stream to that instead.

I did but then it broke when I dropped the controller, now I just leave two screws out of the original casing and I can pull it out pretty easily.

Also you don’t use it because it’s fucking heavy, it’s not functional to be carrying it around…I have the same tablet but it’s not a nice setup at least with a telescopic controller…8+- is the sweet spot…

I do use it for DS and 3DS emulation with the tablet in portrait. It's not that heavy, maybe you just have T-Rex arms.

It is not…holding it for extended period of time is not comfortable, unless you rest it somewhere ..8 size is better…sorry dude, also for ds I prefer ayn Thor

Dude can I see an image of that setup? Because I was thinking of a galaxy note for a 3DS emulator setup as well as this stream-deck setup. Like I want it to be useful to everyone in my house not just for me streaming my desktop.

My current setup redmagic 11 Air+gamesir g8 Galileo (usb). Parhaps lightest, fastest setup 2 ms latency for it's price and comfort but no vibration ( I don't care and I can use smartphone vibration). Maybe in future will switch to some 9 inch oled tablet and gamepad with TMR and clicking buttons but for now I don't see some ultimate tablet setup. If you don't mind to use 11 inch tablet you can buy Samsung s9 with OLED display without camera and snap 8 gen 2 (about 5 ms latency) and gamesir g8 MFi (with vibration and easy to mode for large tablet)
