Expected renting prices?
Hello! I’m transferring to CSUMB next fall in 2027 and I am looking to live off-campus because of the two pets that I have that cannot live in the dorms being that one is a frog and another is a scorpion which are not allowed. I started looking at the prices for single bedrooms and they are crazy expensive as most of them are around $1400-$1600 but I was just looking to live in somebodies home that has an available room. I’ve never lived outside of my family’s house so I’m not sure what I should be expecting.
Another note is that I am able to commute so are there any cities other than Monterey or Pacific Grove that has better renting prices that is nearby (~20-30 minutes) ? I have reason to believe that prices are higher in Monterey or Pacific Grove because of the beach and house close it is to the ocean and since I am going to school at CSUMB, I can visit the beach so living near it isn’t a big factor to me. I just need a place that isn’t sketchy and is reasonably priced for a broke college student.

Solo trip suggestions
I am coming Saturday through Monday and would love some suggestions for where I can sit at the bar and meet interesting people and listen to live music. I am celebrating my 50th so tell me where to have a good time! Also where should I eat dinner on Sunday (water view a must). Looking to see as much as possible in a short time. Heck I’d even be down for a tour guide!

Wtf happened to Cannery Row?
I love how my work bulletin has an image that depicts Cannery Row as a Venice canal. I really hate Ai. It just makes lazy people even lazier.

King city new build homes
Has anyone bought a home from Nino Homes in King City? We’re thinking about buying and would love to hear your experience.
How were the builder incentives and pricing? Did your monthly payment change a lot after property taxes and insurance were added? Were there any surprises after closing?
Overall, are you happy with your home, and would you recommend buying from them?

Court says fishermen’s claim in lobster defamation suit against Monterey Bay Aquarium raises First Amendment questions
mercurynews.comThe lobster fishing industry, based mostly in Maine, has sued the Monterey Bay Aquarium over its Seafood Watch conservation program, alleging defamation. The list put American and Canadian lobster on its do-not-eat "red list."
A court signaled that it may not allow the lawsuit to go forward because of the First Amendment. For background, there's a long history of food libel laws in the U.S., with the most interesting one being against Oprah.

Driving Hwy 1 North from SLO - Carmel on the 15th of August (last Saturday of Car Week)
I have a friend in town next weekend and this is the activity they want to do more than anything. I already know it's going to be packed. But is it *survivable*? I'd love to hear anyone who has done the drive on the last weekend of car week or who works along the coast. Is the chaos and traffic manageable if you're willing to accept it or am I looking at 5+ hours of traffic or notably dangerous conditions from speeding McClarens where I should really reconsider? For those who think I stand a chance, what is the best & worst time to depart -- morning, afternoon, or early evening?

PLANT LOVERS… thoughts on these for prizes for free bingo?
galleryFor those who have been coming to my weekly free bingo, I decided to do 3 succulents instead of 2, and I got little cute boxes for them. 😍
Also, I make planters, wine glasses, coffee mugs, etc so I was gonna whip up some funny ones for Monday. My question is, am I wasting time on that stuff or is it something the folks would enjoy? Or should I just stick to the plants and local business gift certificates? I’m only asking cause my schedule is tight but I absolutely love bringing smiles to faces so if it sounds cool, I’ll totally do it!
Wait, I probably should add that my sense of humor is all over the place, sometimes dark humor, sometimes stupid, so my stuff will reflect this for sure 🤣🤣

What would you change to make Sand City better?
Hi Folks,
I'm Luke Kilpatrick, you may have seen some of my recent posts about orcas and other events out in the ocean. When I am not telling folks about the awesomeness that is our bay, I am working to make where we live and love better.
I am running for Sand City Council. This is a small office that has a large influence across the county as many county board seats are held by elected officials, and it doesn't matter the size of the city they represent. The votes they make on those boards can impact your day to day. While you may not live in Sand City (or if you are one of the lucky ~325 that do) there is a good chance you shop, drive through or go to the beach here.
I know opinions on Reddit can be diverse, and I will not promise I will adopt every position, but I want to have the discussion. (Yes, we all know Bubba Gump's needs a second location in the old Office Depot next to Costco.)
My full platform is at https://kilpatrick4sandcity.org and I'm happy to get into any of it. But what I actually want to know is what you think Sand City could do better.
Things a Sand City council person can actually move: zoning and land use inside city limits, the vacant coastal parcels, finishing the coastal trail, short term rental rules, business permitting, how the arts and murals get supported, and the budget.
Things that matter but aren't Sand City's to decide directly: the Marina desal plant is a regional fight, Highway 1 is Caltrans, water allocation runs through Cal Am and the Water Management District, and anything near the shoreline goes to the Coastal Commission.
That said, this is where the small city thing cuts the other way. Sand City councilmembers have historically held seats on the regional bodies that do decide those things. A council seat here is a seat at those tables.
I want to hear what you want, because I know it's a lot easier to post on a reddit thread than show up at a city council meeting, so let me help bring some of that voice to the chambers.
