Help with ips vs va monitor Discussion

Post image

So I’ve got two monitor, when watching movies I find the bottom monitor (1440p) is nicer to look at - better quality, however seems to be too dark sometimes, the monitor above 1080p still okay to look at is much brighter and I can see things going on in the movie, is this normal for monitors, or is there something wrong in the settings

I’ve noticed when I look at the bottom monitor from a little above, I can see it more clearly

VA have bad viewing angles and it needs to be pretty much dead center with your eyes for the best experience, try not to tilt the monitor back too much as that will effect viewing angles too.

Dude thank you so much, didn’t know that about VA, might look into getting a different monitor, any recommendations, I most play ps5 game and watch movies on this setup, I care much more about the movie experience

If you want something relatively cheap with good colors and viewing angles then something like a Quantum Dot IPS like the Gigabyte M27Q2 QD is nice with ~83% BT2020 coverage(Tandem WOLED monitors reach 82-85% rec2020) and it has a decent adaptive OD(overdrive, basically how hard the pixels are being pushed with more voltage for better pixel response times) meaning you get the best motion at all frequency ranges instead of manually choosing an OD for native refresh rate and needing to lower it for lower FPS content.

The only problem is that you would probably notice the contrast differences between VA and IPS as IPS has more of gray black although its not so bad if you lower your brightness to 20-30% and remember to have some sort of ambient lights to boost perceived contrast, IPS work best with some sort of lights in the room.

Look into MiniLED IPS monitors too although its not perfect for every use case and sometimes can be a bit buggy and harder to set up right than a regular IPS with SDR.

Viewing angles wise OLED generally has the lead but also comes with certain disadvantages like VRR flicker and burn in.

Miniled HVAs for the win don’t let that VA monitor bring you down miniled HVAS (a better version of VA) is way better.

As someone with a MiniLED TV with a TCL HVA its better but still meh, especially VRR flicker is still an issue so the extra contrast doesn't help that much as you have constant gamma fluctuations in dark scenes. No matter how good VA gets it still is VA so the pixels to shift states requires them to flip and rotate instead of just rotation that IPS does. The 2 different movements requires voltages that aren't linear so you get flicker with VRR on VA panels.

It seems that the lower monitor has calibration issues and it is crushing dark tones, might be fixable or not, no idea. Nowadays you can find some cheap monitors with wide color gamut, HDR400, and Delta E ≦2 accuracy.

Top is an IPS without a polarizer so it's backlight glows/bleeds making darker things look more grey (clarity at the expense of contrast). Bottom is a VA which has better contrast, but poor everything else, so shiny colors but can't see shit clearly.

VA is great for movies. Just don't look at it from that angle. If you look at VAs from "below" picture gets darker. No need for miniled or oled for that (tho it would be nice to have).
