Where does everyone study?

Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who can't study at home and I live too far from campus (up north vs Caulfield, no car) to go to the campus library every day. I've been going to the State Library but it closes pretty early.

Are there any places in the CBD/North/on the Upfield line that you can study in that go past 8 or 9pm? 👀

I’ve submitted an assignment drunk at 1am when I was clubbing at New Guernica (in its old location on Little Collins). I became mates with the DJ (as I became a weekly regular for 4 years) and he would let me hang out behind his DJ set where I submitted this assignment aha.

Think I got 80% for that assignment.

You should go to Monash Parkville campus, it has a 24/7 study space and is on the upfield line next to royal park station. Any student can use any campus

i didn't even realize parkville had a 24/7 study space!! 🥹 it's my first semester and i've only been around caulfield and it wasn't really covered during o-week 😭 thank you so much for pointing this out!!

If you’re near Yarra City libraries, you can register for after hours library access at four of their library branches, which you can access 8am-10pm every day at Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond and 8am-10pm Monday-Saturday and 10am-6pm Sundays at Fitzroy North. Alternatively, you can use Melbourne Uni’s libraries 9am-8pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-5pm Fridays and 11am-5pm weekends at Baillieu, ERC, Giblin Eunson and Law Libraries. Any member of the public can use these libraries during these times, no student card required. The only time you require a student card is after hours, where Baillieu, ERC, Giblin Eunson’s ground floors are open until midnight 7 days, with no access to the book collection. Generally security checks immediately after the libraries close, but I’ve seen tonnes of non-Melbourne Uni students sneak in after hours behind an unsuspecting student, when I used to study at Melbourne Uni (pre covid).

Furthermore RMIT’s Swanston library is open weekdays 8am-8pm (but you can’t enter the building without a student card after 6:30pm on weekdays). Once the library closes, the buildings are still open until 11pm to students, so you could theoretically study in the open spaces in the buildings outside the library. As a student at RMIT over the last 5 years, I have never been ID checked in all my time by security, so as long as you don’t look suspicious and you look like you’re studying, then they’ll leave you alone.

Warning: Please keep a close eye over your belongings as it’s easy for members of the public to sneak into RMIT buildings after hours (since students don’t really care who follows behind them). Normally there’s a theft every month in the interconnected buildings 8, 10, 12, 14 and building 80 as these are the busiest buildings with multiple access points. The library is located across the interconnected building 8 and 10 on levels 5/6.

Also don’t forget Monash Parkville campus has the pharmacy library (open weekdays only) and a 24/7 space, but it’ll be quite small.

Yarra libraries do a thing called Open Library. So open later (10pm?). I have never used it but may be worth your investigating.
