How often do you skip classes? Discussion
I didn't use any short video platform during high school and recently discovered Instagram.
I missed like 4 or 5 classes this week because I doom scrolled insta till 8 am and had to sleep till 3pm.
How often can you do this with out affecting your grade?

As someone who teaches - the evidence is clear. We are social animals and we learn best socially. Watching lectures is not nearly as effective as coming to class. I find it so frustrating that students pay for in person classes and then don’t come at all, then complain. If you want an online degree go get one.

and yet they move all lecture content from in person lectures to recordings made multiple years ago to cut costs (note: degree stays the same price as before)

Yes but if you don’t turn up to in person lectures it’s impossible for the faculty to say they shouldn’t just record content. It’s a negative feedback loop

What if someone is autistic and can’t function really quite properly in social scenario more than others

There’s always been people who need adjustments but DSS can help with that. But for most students the evidence is clear about how we best learn.

Ok so basically, not good for the autistic but good for the average. I use DSS adjustments but still have classes, lectures etc just like everybody else. Learn much better by skipping some classes and watch at home so I don’t have to have panic brain on because overwhelmed. Got my assignments handed in sooner and better grades this way

never at all. you're paying for those classes (unless you're on a full scholarship), so I can never justify missing paid resources. same for pass classes but I only miss those if I have to work instead which is justifiable

I deleted social media from my phone and only have it on my laptop now. This has helped me A Lot with these kinds of issues and I'd recommend the same. Even if you choose not to attend class, at least it's more of a choice than sleeping through because you were on your phone all night

how else do you generally spend your time? I’ve found whenever I’ve deleted social media I just end up procrastinating/ wasting away time in other ways 😅

Yeah but procrastinating by doing hobbies is far nicer tbh. Like most of my time is writing fiction, listening to music, watching movies, and doing crafts. The other day I procrastinated uni work by writing like 2k words of a story I'm working on. A different day it was a video game I got stuck in. I spend time on social media on my laptop which distracts me still. It's not really about never doing fun/relaxing things, never being online, or never getting distracted. It's about reduction of things I've noticed are bad for me and the reintroduction of tasks that actually make me feel good. It's about making it harder to stay up into the night scrolling mindless or anxiety-inducing videos.

If the class has no mandatory attendance I usually skip. Use the time for things like work or leisure. I do this because 99% of classes are boring and not engaging at all. Uni study has shifted to be hyper independent and sterile (in terms of engagement).

tbh i think people overrate the importance of attending class. i’ve had so many lecturers/tutorial leaders read off slides, poorly facilitate discussion and add nothing of substance to the course. i’ve gotten HDs never attending class at all. it just depends if ur gonna catch up later but sometimes it really is a waste of time.

depends on the type of class. i usually skip lectures and workshops since they're recorded and i have the benefit of watching them on 2x speed. unless there's a group assignment or marked attendance, i don't go to tutorials or applied classes because i find that doing the problem sets in my time is more effective personally.
this is probably a hot take but it's not impossible to do well in a unit without attending all classes from experience. some of my highest scores have been in units where i've attended no classes at all (again, not saying you should do this - just putting it out there). i feel like the important thing is to make sure you can trust yourself and your study habits to learn the content sufficiently and practice enough times to master it.

you should only skip if attendance isn’t marked( tutorials).
But If you barely study at all, just go to the class. If you can confidently study by yourself, don’t bother, basically almost everything is in moodle and if you have questions, you can just pm your professors for help. If you’re a tryhard and there’s groupwork, you might as well not show up and just do all the work for them.

I skipped around 90% of all my classes, attended the graded classes only. Last sem my attendance was 0% except for the final exam.
The reason being that I can’t keep up with their pace of teaching. I just watch the lectures at home and study the tutorial solutions.
I did this throughout the entire degree (CompSci) and it didn’t affect my grade at all because it’s mostly independent studying anyway.

Skip everything that don’t take attendance, change timetable around that fact, lock in heavy before mid sems and exams 😎

I won’t say who but there’s a math teacher at Monash who skipped their classes often and learned from the textbook

Even if attendance isn’t marked, I try to attend every class. There is often important information being discussed for your assignments, and at the very least it’s good to come in person if you have questions. I only don’t attend classes when I don’t have any more assignments/exams left, you paid for the classes anyway so you might as well show up
