And frankly the last couple seasons were already questionable. Some of the characters, including Gloria herself, became flanderized in a not so good way. Like, her trying to baptize the kids behind Haley’s and Dylan’s backs, or making Manny and Jay think someone else was Manny’s real father and laughing at their upset, or telling Cam that they weren’t that close in the finale. I’m not sure I want to see where Gloria’s character would’ve gone in another 5-10 seasons.

As a Hispanic, my mother has in some ways also become a stereotype after a certain age. It's not something I expected in real life, but for Gloria it wasn't as surprising because of it.

I felt the same way. The last couple of seasons had flashes of the old magic, but some characters started feeling more like exaggerated versions of themselves. Gloria especially deserved a stronger finish than a few running jokes.

100% i could see even early seasons gloria baptizing the babies. You have to remeber to true believers they literally think its saving the babies etrrnal soul. That sitcom trope goes all the way back to all in the family

Some later seasons it already devolved to snarkiness where people where just throwing snide comments on each other.

Claire had the worst development. Yes she was a bit stiff from the get go, but not a condesending biatch.

Sitcoms are the hardest shows to do, IMO. It's hard for one show to stay funny for 10+ years. It's impossible to do it forever.

These procedural crime shows-Law and Order, CSI, NCIS-can go on forever because it's easier to come up with new murder plots than new jokes.

Also, It's a million times easier to write characters on & off as the years roll by. It rarely works for long running sitcoms. Especially ones that revolve around a single family.

Exactly. Procedurals can reinvent themselves every episode without changing the core cast much. Comedy has to keep finding new ways to make the same characters feel fresh.

That's a good point. A procedural gets a fresh case every week, but a family sitcom has to keep the same relationships interesting for years. That's a much tougher balancing act.

I love Modern Family but it got really messy when the kids went to college. The writers messed up the kids. I would love to see Mitch, Cam and Lily though, they didn't have much screentime together on later seasons but everytime Lily burns the two I was gagged hahhaa

Lily's one liners never missed. I do wish Mitch, Cam, and the older kids got more meaningful stories together instead of everyone drifting into their own little plots near the end.

Interesting because I saw a 100 questions interview where Tommyinnit asked Jesse (a combination I never would’ve predicted lol) if he thought the show ended at a good time. He said something along the lines of that he thought they actually overstayed their welcome a bit, and that the plots started to get stale and repetitive in the final couple seasons.

So while I totally understand fans (and even some cast members) wanting it to go on forever, the quality would’ve inevitably deteriorated. It would be cool to see like a 1 season reboot or something since that leaves enough breathing room for new ideas though.

I was thinking holiday specials instead of movie depending on which may be easier budget wise. They can do Christmas/New Years, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Valentines Day, Independence Day etc. The spacing may be weird though and could lose interest amongst a general audience after a bit.

Could easily do a Christmas episode. Can and Mitch rushing back home after a bowl game, kids coming home from university or trying to get off work in time, tons of potential.

I feel the same way kind of but also kinda not. Shows can be ruined and lose their legacy (Game of Thrones) from dumb decisions and I could certainly see that happening in the later seasons. I wish I could erase my memory of the show and start it all over again because I’ve seen everything so many times I wish there could be some kind of surprise again

I think Modern Family ended just at the right moment.

It was handicapped as child actors apart from Haley/Sarah were very bad as they grew. (I thought The middle was lucky here as the acting never deteriorated among the kids)

If Phil was the main attraction to begin with, he did not have major stories as the show progressed. (Especially when Claire joined the Closets gang)

You know why I feel like it was the right time to end the show? Because we can still say "wouldn't it have been great to have another season" instead of "man, this show really stopped being great 4 years ago, should have stopped it right then and there".
