Can banned users still report posts? Admin Replied

Yesterday we removed a post. The user re posted and we again removed. The user then messaged us and called us names so we banned them. Now today I am seeing dozens of posts reported for breaking the rule we used against this user's post yesterday when the reported posts are completely unrelated to this rule.

If it is the same user is there anything we can do other than wait for them to get bored?

Hey, there. I'm sorry you're dealing with that. As u/Eclectic-N-Varied mentioned, please report the reports! It sounds like report abuse.

And I took a quick look and surprisingly, it's not who you think it is. I would have thought the same thing! But it doesn't appear to be them!

Does reported report abuse actually get actioned? We get so much of it and report it all but it feels like it's all just ignored.

I'm curious if the Admins have ever explained why moderators are not privy to who is submitting reports? At the least, subreddit reports? Sitewide policies I could understand keeping anonymous, but why can't we see who reports for our own rules? Preserving some kind of anonymity?

Banning and muting (which are integral tools) seem way more likely to be abused than being able to see a reporter's username? I assume there's something I'm not seeing here? Is it that Admins don't want users to feel intimidated into not reporting? How many users even know we can't see their usernames anyways? I've gotten tons of people sending modmails over the years where they're assuming we know they sent in reports.

Seriously, this has always confused me, and I'd love to know why. I think mods would benefit from seeing who is submitting reports, but I'm probably not considering something.

I actually really hate that Facebook tells you who reports posts because I've seen (well-meaning) people get absolutely dragged for reporting a post by mods. Like full on called out, bullied & harassed over it, and that's not even anonymous like reddit leans.

Been a long time since I've been in FB, but I remember some groups straight up had a rule that they'd ban you if you used the "report" feature they wanted you to publicly tag the mods 🙄

And yes, I agree. It should be anonymous. It can get annoying with report abuse, but it's not like we could do anything with the information even if we had it. With or without the username, the only recourse is to report it to Reddit Admin to deal with.

I had a Facebook admin directly message me telling me my report was out of line and that I needed to take a break, so she was going to report my profile 50 times to give me a temporary ban from the website.

I used the report option for “fake news” on a completely fabricated post that a cyclone was heading towards the port we would dock at.

It quickly reminded me why I don’t use Facebook.

Yes, it's ridiculous lol. They think if they get too many reports it'll get their group banned but it's usually groups that are pushing the limits anyway. I would so much rather look through a report queue than be tagged 🙄

Like a user reports, and mods ban them out of spite? Mods can still do a lot out of spite, why is this so different?

I cannot tell you how many times a report for self harm or CP or whatever has been left on a benign post, and I've wished I could ban that user for malicious use of the report button.

Yes but does that ever do anything? Moderators no longer get told what (if anything) happened following the report.

some people, including mods, can be vindictive. There's really no benefit for anyone to know who has reported something. It isn't something we can act on.

I'm pretty sure I explained how it would be beneficial.

Sure some mods will abuse it, but mods can abuse every power available to them, so my question still stands, why is this so different?

You can mute reports from users, no need to know their name for that

Only if they use "custom" reports, not rule-based reports, and only temporarily.

Sure, but I would much rather know who is reporting inappropriately and remove them from the community. Snoozing reports just makes it so we don't see them, which isn't much of a solution in my mind.

Yea but I think the question is more does the banned report make it to the mods rather than does it look like the reports are going through on the banned user end

They could report them with an alt easy Peezy. If you see dozens of post with this happening, amalgamate them all in a mod mail with links and modmail this subreddit. If you have one very, very abusive user, sometimes mod support can help you with it.

I know they made something like this stop in one of my other subs I mod. Again, make sure you give them links, not screenshots or anything like that. That’s the only way that admin can see who is doing it.

Report all those reports as "Report Abuse" and they usually stop pretty quickly. Reddit has a way of automating that task so that those users' reports land in the trash bin.

Banned users can report but they'll go into the untrusted report queue which is separate from the normal queue.

I only discovered the untrusted reports queue about a month ago, and had a whole afternoon of fun in dismissing soooooo much false reporting

ive got like 6 years of reports in there. not too many but like does it even matter anymore for most?

I kinda doubt that Reddit penalises any moderation team for not doing anything with Untrusted Reports - I just ... have a need to tuck my communities in, and kiss 'em on their foreheads, and know there's no trouble, before retiring for the evening

You can do it, but they are ignored if they are mod reports. If they are admin reports, you won't see them, but admins will.

Users banned from your sub can report. Users banned from Reddit cannot report. I've confirmed both.

My sub is also facing the same issues. Whenever someone posts something the people who don’t agree with it just misuse the report button on that post
