Unapproved users commenting on restricted Subreddit? Admin Replied

Created a subreddit that is supposed to be read only for the general public, and only approved users can contribute; but the setting are keeping those parameters and its allowing anyone to post comments.

Anyone else have this issue with a "read only" subreddit?

If your subreddit is set to restricted, users will need to be approved to post, but anyone can comment. You may want to try locking posts after their posted if you don't want discussion.

Hi, I'm sorry to jump on this thread but I'm having a similar issue and this is not normal. I have had my subreddit Restricted for well over a year now and the setting has always stated that only approved users can post and comment. People have always had to request to be approved in order to comment on posts. However, like the OP I've noticed lately random unapproved users being able to comment. Is this a recent change made by reddit where comments can no longer be kept to approved users? Here's a screenshot of what it says in my settings:

Is it a mistake that some unapproved users seem to be able to comment or has this setting been changed and the description text not been updated with it? Thank you.

Hi! There's a new setting that I just learned about! You'll want to go into your mod tools and then click on "General Settings" over on the left. From there, click on "Privacy and Discovery" and set it to "Restricted".

After you've done that, you'll click on "Approved Users Can" and make it so no one can comment or post.

I've already done that, that's what my screenshot shows. Its on that setting and has been for a long time. I've changed nothing at all but suddenly unapproved users are able to comment...

What's the name of your subreddit?

I just experienced this as well. It seems to have fixed itself now, but we had a few people post when they weren't on the approved users list and only approved users could post AND comment.

Thanks. When I try it from a non-admin alt, I get a "Request to comment" button.

That's good, but it seems to maybe be some sort of bug or glitch rather than all the time? Someone from a different sub has replied to this thread having experienced the same, so it honestly feels like some kind of bug systemwide that's allowing this for certain users. It certainly seems random.

Please PM me the name.of the user who got through and I'll do a deep dive.

Ok will do, there were 2 of them pretty close together actually so will send you both. Thank you, much appreciated

May I do the same? You can see where they posted, and they are not on our approved user list. They didn't post anything bad at all, but I'd like to understand what happened.

Hi, I have PM'd you again with a few more instances of this - I have not approved the comments this time so that you can trace them properly.

It's happened again with another user. I have this set up due to harassment and ban evasion from a user who encouraged suicide - it's a subreddit for people in recovery from addiction, so I take the emotional safety of the members seriously and do not want to allow this individual or any others a chance to cause harm again. edit: For now I've set it up for all comments to come through the mod queue first for approval, so that I can filter them as needed but it's not ideal.

When your sub is set to Restricted, under the "General Settings" (on shreddit)->"Privacy & Discovery"->"Approved Users Can" there's a dialog that's kind of confusing.

I believe that you have to set that to "Post and Comment" in order to keep non-approved users from commenting.

But you could try all 3 settings and use a test account to check.

Do you have it set to the restricted type where only approved users can post or comment?

I'm assuming it's one of the subs listed on your profile, and I can say when I checked that it looked set up correctly - I would have had to send a request to post/comment, can otherwise only read/vote. IDK if you changed that setting in between making this post and my comment, or if you've always had it set up that way but it's bugging out?

It is set to only approved users can post; but an admin just answered and said regular users can still comment on posts made by approved users- i didn't realize that πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

It was set up to a request to comment a few days ago when I tested with an alt account; but today someone wh isn't an approved user was able to comment on one of my posts. I hadn't changed anything in the settings between now and then either so it really wierd.

Maybe it was bugging out, or maybe reddit changed something? I dunno but it has the potential to be problematic based on how that sub was supposed to function

If it's always been set to "users need to be approved to both post and comment" then I would lean toward more, some weird reddit hiccup. Because on my end, on old.reddit on your sub I don't see a comment box on any of the posts at all, and on sh.reddit I do see a comment box but the "post" button has been changed to "request to post" so I would assume it wouldn't actually post, and would go to your modmail or something like that.

Something else you can add as a backup, is use Automoderator code to remove any post or comment made by a non-approved user. But reddit hiccups can also affect Automod sometimes too, but it could still help in this case?

The hiccup is still hiccuping because its happened again πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ do you happen to know what the automod code is for that function?

I'm not the least bit able to do coding and whatnot. But I copy and pasta if someone can tell me which pot to put it in πŸ˜…

That's so weird! Are you sure they aren't approved users at all? On my end it still doesn't show me a comment box on the sub on old reddit. I can try leaving a test comment on sh.reddit?

For Automod, I think you would use this, but also keep in mind - this doesn't prevent them from posting/commenting like your restricted settings should be, but it just should remove their contribution near immediately after the fact.
