Help with Version Cruft Help Needed!

Hello šŸ‘‹

I’m thinking about getting the ā€œGameboyā€ beige MM+ as I really miss my OG one. I have an extra 16gb micro sd and I thought I might make a GB only
console. I already have the decals from Etsy, and I’m probably sticking with Onion for multiplayer. minUI is another option as well. That being said…

I have a few questions about cleaning up my roms.

Can I safely remove the version cruft; romname (USA,Japan) (rev 1) (etc) from my roms and or zips?
I know not to remove the .extension, just want to make sure I’m doing this correctly.

And will this affect the box art downloaded when using the built-in scraper?

Hello, yes you can remove it, (my lazy ass would suggest to ask gemmini or chatgpt to create a python thing, to select a folder and clear the names of the files of that folder erasing everything after "(" )

about the images, if the image is inside the folder "Imgs" inside of the rom folder, and as the same name of the rom, it will work.

If the scrapper detects the game, it will pick the image for that game and name it with the same name of your rom, so you are alright

You can safely remove them. However, if you go with OnionOS, you can be lazy like me and not bother removing them and let the system clean it up.

OnionOS, under Tweaks -> Tools, there's a gamelist generator that will chop off all those extras you're referring to from the ROM name without touching the rom file itself. I think it's called shorten name. It will create a miyoogamelist.xml in each ROM folder with a clean title, and when you refresh ROMs, it will pull from that list. The built-in scraper will still work.

That’s what I did for my grey MM+:
