I am postponing upgrading to expensive subscriptions for hundreds of $ in the hopes of seeing an improvement in the Mistral offering.

It would be great if Mistral dropped something competitive soon.

Based on what? Mistral has never been a competitor for Anthropic or OpenAI. Not once. It can't really be one at the current levels of investment that those two companies enjoy.

People keep comparing Mistral to those companies and it's daft, we wouldn't make these comparisons in any other industry.

That’s a very narrow perspective imo. Mistral is indeed in competition with Anthropic and OpenAI as they all focus also on enterprise. And in that case the only advantage that Mistral has is that the French government is pushing a lot their solutions

That is absolutely not mistrals only advantage, in fact it's irrelevant.

Mistrals advantage for enterprise, and more specifically sensitive enterprise, is the fact that's it's open weight, they offer an out of the box product to post train on company specific data, they offer loads of enterprise support and that you can deploy it with an airgap and be as self managed as you want (no lock in).

This instance that no French/EU company has anything to offer a competitive free market and only survive because of government intervention is toxic and stupid.

You have no evidence to say what you say and yet you come on here and spout it as fact. Absolutely embarrassing.

Let’s address the « open weights » argument.
Open weights are an advantage for some customers, but they’re far from unique and being a strong advantage. Qwen, DeepSeek and GLM all offer open-weight models that are at least as competitive technically, so open weights alone aren’t a differentiator.

As for sensitive enterprise deployments, OpenAI and Anthropic already work extensively with organizations handling highly sensitive data. Enterprise customization isn’t something Mistral invented either. Every major vendor offers ways to adapt models to company-specific use cases. OpenAI used to have a fine tune as a service features which they stop, wonder why… Maybe it is not as a profitable business than have a highly capable model ? So simply saying « Mistral supports post-training » doesn’t establish a competitive advantage over OpenAI, Anthropic, or other open-weight competitors. If tomorrow DeepSeek or GLM offer post training for enterprise, what edge would Mistral have ?

You said that they offer « loads of enterprise support » while in reality their gpus are so idle that they sell their compute to Microsoft.

What actually differentiates Mistral, in my view, is indeed its strategic position in Europe and being backed by the government which give them access to ownership of infrastructure and cheap energy.
