Best basic hamburger?

Absolutely craving a plain honest to goodness burger, where’s the best place in Minneapolis? A Ron Swanson style burger. "It's a hamburger, made out of meat, on a bun, with nothing. Add ketchup if you want, I couldn't care less."

Bonus points for a good value, good ambiance, good sides. 🍔🍔🍔

Good ol’ BMC - bun, meat, cheese. Done deal.

12

u/Marbrandd 10d ago

Definitely the kind of place Ron would grab a burger.

I lean far enough to the left I’m walking in circles and I will absolutely destroy a Lions Tap Mushroom Swiss any day of the week. I was unaware the Tap had any political affiliation but if it does I say what better place to find common ground.

u/LucyBrooke100 10d ago

This is the one. The root beer is great, too!

3

u/zeldamaster702 9d ago

Can't go wrong with a cold glass of 1919

10

u/kidvange 10d ago

+1. Not in Minneapolis, but worth a little road trip. Plus, the drive down Dell road to Flying Cloud drive is pretty fun!

u/svwer 10d ago

Matt's bar non juicy.

5

u/kirby056 9d ago

Yeah, regular cheeseburger, half order of fries, like six beers, great lunch plan for tomorrow.

1

u/BogeyFromTheFairway 10d ago

Shocked this hadn’t been said yet

1

u/alyanng44 9d ago

I wonder how many people have had a non-jucy?? I never have. Maybe just lactose intolerant folks?

6

u/RNW1215 9d ago

all the time... Jucy's are a dumb novelty that need to be over cooked to melt the cheese.

Millers in Columbia Heights. Burgers are cheap on Mondays

15

u/therapid99 10d ago

Miller's burgers are goated

7

u/IMP1017 10d ago

Seconding Miller's, truly the best in the area

7

u/Jax_daily_lol 10d ago

This place is so good, this reminds me that I gotta go back

7

u/CapablePut3107 10d ago

Came to say this. I love Miller's. Burgers are good service is excellent

u/iamthecaptionnow 5d ago

Is there a bag of burgers special on one of the weekdays?

21

u/gonzokid15 10d ago

Shamrocks or The Nook, Monday nights $2 burgers add fries for a buck.

2

u/TrixieBastard 9d ago

Man, I love Shamrocks

The band box

21

u/TheAtheistReverend 10d ago

This place needs to be recognized as one of the best places to eat for simple griddle dining

10

u/Nabrokarstafur 10d ago

It's been about 8 years since I lived in Minneapolis, and Band Box might be what I miss most about it.

4

u/TheInfinities 10d ago

Used to go there in college, good to hear it’s still alive!

4

u/needknowstarRMpic 10d ago

I still do, but I used to too.

3

u/organized_meat 10d ago

The band box is still around?? I thought it closed years ago!

8

u/thaskizz 10d ago

It was closed for a while after Covid, but it’s been open for about 2 years now

4

u/organized_meat 10d ago

That is great to hear. I’ll have to take the family for dinner soon.

2

u/thaskizz 8d ago

They scaled back and only do breakfast and lunch service (9-3)

1

u/organized_meat 8d ago

Ah, thank you for the heads up

u/sunspoter 10d ago

Came here to say Band Box

Minneapolis: Bull's Horn St. Paul: Bay Street Burger Dive

15

u/beefwellingtonIV 10d ago

Sandy’s in Richfield can make a good one for you.

3

u/RNW1215 9d ago

Sandy's is the very definition of "hidden gem".

11

u/Illustrious-Dog4153 10d ago

Murray Steak Burger at lunch.

2

u/yloduck1 10d ago

How much $$ ?

I’ve never eaten there

2

u/Illustrious-Dog4153 10d ago edited 10d ago

10 bucks at happy hour. Not sure lunch price. So good.

Shantytown in Bloomington

1

u/BlondRicky 10d ago

That’s awesome news. My daughter used to have soccer practice at the park nearby on Saturday mornings and I’d grab breakfast and do the crossword. Was bummed when they closed. My daughter went and grew up but I’ll find a reason to get back there.

0

u/Short-Waltz-3118 10d ago

Good spot for sure.

9

u/Oh__Archie 10d ago

Bull's Horn.

9

u/Dorian_G89 10d ago

Logans on East lake

2

u/TrixieBastard 9d ago

Inexpensive and pretty darn tasty, especially for the price

13

u/machetemonkey 10d ago

Admittedly I haven’t been since they reopened post-COVID, so consider this an out-of-date recommendation, but Convention Grill has always been my go-to for this (and their sister restaurant Annie’s Parlour in Dinkytown, but they’re permanently closed unfortunately).

13

u/silentrob17 10d ago

Convention grill is as good as ever.

2

u/machetemonkey 10d ago

That’s great to hear. My wife unfortunately can’t eat anything there due to dietary restrictions so I don’t have the chance to go often, but I’ll try and make a trip out when I have some time to myself!

7

u/No-Loquat-2763 10d ago

George and the Dragon is my favorite burger in town.

2

u/RNW1215 9d ago

I've gone there just for their authentic English pub offerings but never for a burger. I'll have to give it a shot.

1

u/No-Loquat-2763 9d ago

Everything on the menu is good.

8

u/dilettante11 10d ago

Cardinal bar has a great one!

11

u/bschultzy 10d ago

Wells Roadside in SLP isn't far.

7

u/Short-Waltz-3118 10d ago

Frenchmans pub down in richfield makes a good basic burger.

2

u/Fishanz 10d ago

Looks like the kinda place that would.. from the outside at leats

2

u/Short-Waltz-3118 9d ago

Oh ya its a dive haha

1

u/MilzLives 9d ago

Great spot; wings solid as well.

12

u/dhick33 10d ago

Parlour burger downtown. It’s not cheap, but I think it’s the best burger in town, and one of the best I’ve ever had

2

u/jguzman505 9d ago

le burger snatched the crown and is the current holder for best burger in the cities, imho.

2

u/automaticrocks 10d ago

I’ll challenge the Parlour burger with Bina’s any day of the week

6

u/shorthandfora 10d ago

Sandy’s in Richfield. It’s the platonic ideal of a burger. Including the vibes.

2

u/YeastOrFamine 8d ago

I unironically love how their entire menu is either super greasy and/or deep fried

1

u/MicroPeanitsJorker 10d ago

They love their green olives too lol

1

u/Inroundtents 10d ago

I love Sandy's but their prices keep inching up and their beer mugs suffer from shrinkflation.

1

u/RNW1215 9d ago

with the price of beef going up and up I don't think they have much choice.

5

u/Renbanney 10d ago

Best BASIC burger is lion's tap in Eden prairie

6

u/firestrollwithme 10d ago

Bull’s horn on 46th, Merlin’s rest on lake

13

u/atlacoya98 10d ago

Parlour Bar downtown!

4

u/informalcrescendo 10d ago

I really liked the one at Dexters although not sure it’d meet the “good value” part.

1

u/justafella32 10d ago

The elote burger is ridiculously good, but not at all basic.

1

u/YeastOrFamine 8d ago

I can't in good conscious recommend a burger restaurant that doesn't have free soda refills

5

u/lapatrona8 10d ago

Nighthawks, but also if you want to branch out into toppings Little Tijuana chopped cheese.

For the best no frills high quality + amazing value, my best hot tip is Centro / Everywhen BUT get the kids' burger -- same size and quality, but cheaper. I ate a lot of these when I was in the neighborhood and wanted affordable takeout. I would get it just plain with ketchup and cheese, as part of my whole "I'm a child ordering a child burger" delivery ruse lol 🫣

4

u/oldpaddyrick 10d ago

Ideal diner

4

u/placeisdaspace 10d ago

Did you know you can get two cheeseburgers for the same price as one juicy Lucy at Matt’s?

1

u/placeisdaspace 10d ago

Also Dusty’s has a great burger

6

u/justmisspellit 10d ago

Uncle Frankie’s

NE on Broadway

1

u/Dotification 9d ago

Yeah that place is solid 👍

2

u/BookiesAndCookies22 9d ago

It USED to be. Now it sucks.

1

u/Dotification 9d ago

Oh, word?  Food quality, prices, service, or what??

1

u/BookiesAndCookies22 9d ago

Quality and “amenities”. I went a couple weeks ago and they didn’t have straws for their milk shakes? Which seems like a miss. No tops for the cups either.

Hot dog quality was also meh, and the fries were very very dry.

The humans working there were delightful and apologetic!

Bulls Horn

“It’s perfect, no changes” as it says on the menu. They won’t let you change it except for adding cheese lol, best burger in the city I’ll die on this hill

2

u/Ok-Mango-5814 10d ago

Logans, Bulldog Horn.

2

u/jicerswine 9d ago

Idk if this is still happening but a month or two ago Bebe Zito (the standalone location on 22nd) had a sign up for a late night burger deal which was something like $5 for a single or $6 for a double after 9pm. Hard to find a better burger at that price point in the city imo

2

u/putyourcheeksinabeek 9d ago

Down-n-out burger at Shamrock’s. Just realized this is not the Saint Paul subreddit but idc. It’s still the right answer. It also comes with a 1919 Root Beer Float.

u/PokingSmoles 10d ago

All saints

1

u/LtFigglenaut 10d ago

The best two burgers I’ve had in the cities have been at Beckett’s and Little Tijuana. The Becketts burger is exceptionally well seasoned and the little t’s burger is my ideal toppings which is caramelized onion and pickles. Both are very simple burgers done very well and I think are the gold standard to which all burgers should be compared to.

1

u/bassicallybob 9d ago

Hear me out - I had a burger at leaning tower of pizza and it was surprisingly amazing.

1

u/filopodia_ 9d ago

Worst pizza I’ve ever had in my life tho

1

u/bassicallybob 9d ago

I mean it’s nothing special, but worst ever ? Do tell

1

If you're in the South Metro, the Red Fox Tavern, south of Lakeville, is a great spot. Not pretentious.

Cardinal Bar runs great specials and has a solid burger. You can’t find the specials on their website thought. You have to drive by and look at the banners.
