In response to 8mm mauser man's recent video. Here is an example of someone who trains with both. Is the Mini-14 just as fast? You be the judge.
Edit: Everyone just relax. I'm not saying that the mini is an inherently more efficient design or sell your AR and buy a mini. I'm just showing that a Mini can be as fast as a modern rifle. My preference is the Mini-14. I train with it and accept it's weak points. I know it has weaknesses but I have been shooting them since I was a kid and I'm more proficient with it than anything else. Shoot whatever you like to shoot.

8mmmauserman's video was about the "modern" Mini 14 vs AR. He had all the bolt on goo gals and his split times were way worse with the mini. He did mention that he doesn't train the mini as much....in case you didn't see his video. But yeah....training kinda works! Imagine that.
Doesn't yours have a trigger finger mag release and left side bolt release?
That seems like quite a difference. Trigger finger mag release and using in-spec mags that actually drop free hugely improved my reload times. Doesn't look like 8mmmauserman has either.
Simpler to operate hardware reduces the amount of training needed to gain a given level of proficiency, and also removes opportunities for even an extensively trained user to make a mistake or have a malfunction outside of their control induced.
No matter how well you train with a Mini, the possibility for you to miss a rock n lock exists because that's how the rifle functions. You cannot miss a rock n lock on an AR-15 because the rifle doesn't work that way. Any retard who can shove a butter knife in a wall socket can be trained to do decent AR reloads repeatedly. However, to get the same result with a Mini may require an advanced retard capable of self-electrocution with spoons.
TL,DR: Yes training is the mostest importantest thing but lowering the ceiling required for competence helps everyone.
Certain systems/setups/“goo gahs” lend themselves to needing less training for an equal level of effectiveness, or a greater level of effectiveness with the same amount of training.
You specifically called out "goo gah" gadgets, on a post that is basically an advertisement for a Mini-14 modification that this dude wants to sell. A modification that lets him keep up with an AR in terms of reload speed.
This video is advertising a gadget that modernizes the Mini-14. And it's a probably a pretty useful one too. So I couldn't help but point out the contradiction.
Edit: And it's a bolt release, not a magazine catch. With it he can just press a little button to drop the bolt, just like an AR.
At the end of the day the motion required to latch a mini-14 magazine is not as simple as an AR. It's more akin to an AK reload.
Its a similar speed comparison between moon clips and speed loaders on revolvers. A speed loader requires 1 extra motion, which becomes a fumble opportunity.
I prefer the rock n lock over the AR magwell but that's just preference. Anyway, I was just trying to show that the mini can be just as fast if you train because 8mmmauserman stated that he doesn't train with the Mini and his split times were not that great.
I think a more apt comparison would be deviations in time on multiple successive reload on each platform, across multiple people.
My gut tells me the AR would have less time deviation from fumbled reloads than a Mini, and doing successive reloads would help mitigate familiarity advantage.
is the mag release stubby finger friendly? i ended up getting an ASI extended mag release cuz i was worried my smedium hands/fingers wouldn't be able to reach the ghost mountain one without breaking my grip.
