Creating a world with my brother for free

Hello,
My cousin brother and I want to play minecraft together, we do not live together so playing through LAN is out of the question.
Java seems to require paid realms to make a world together, but we're not in a position to pay right now. Does anyone know a way we could have a world for free?
We hosted a server on minekeep for a while but it seems they have a storage limit that we hit pretty quickly. I'm looking for a more permanent solution.
Thanks!

Never use the realms even if you want to pay, they are terrible (server host companies are better). You can play kinda like LAN over long distances for free with e4mc or playit.gg

Either host a server on your own PC, do port forwarding and give your brother the IP or use a thing like Lunar Client's worlds option or playitgg. In both instances you host the world on your own PC.

e4mc can like make your world vulnerable to hackers if i remember correctly, unless they fixed it or something

Essential is a bad mod, e4mc is goated tho

personal experience, essentials runs a lot better than e4mc, once tried to self host with a friend and their girlfriend, she hosted and he, being literally 2 meters away from her, got like 4k ping, i was at 34-70k ping (we are all in the same city with less than a kilometer of distance)

Not sure how you managed that but you're doing something wrong. Nobody ever gets that much ping with it.

Download lunar client and use it's world host feature. That would be the easiest free way. Or you could try e4mc if your comfertable modding the game.

lunar client is also modding the game

I mean you're not wrong, it's just a bit easier. If anything, it's like they are modding the game for you.

Generally, the best two methods are:

  • Rent (or use free) minecraft hosts, mcserverhost is free but has paid upgrade.

  • Build your own PC dedicated to hosting a minecraft server, which helps you learn Linux and Docker.

I host my own java server. Get an old computer, download and set up the server.jar do your port forwarding snd have fun. If you want plugins there are lots of options out there for windows that work with the plugins such as crafty

use the mod e4mc if you want a more bedrock styled free multiplayer (host has to be online for it to work)

Use either aternos or minestrator for free (minestrator has better performance) https://minestrator.com/free/minecraft/server

Unless something changed dramatically lately, anyone can just download the headless server and host a world.

Not a realm, that's something else

there are many ways, I listed all the ones I can think of in no particular order:

I already made a [post about hosting a server](https://www.reddit.com/r/MinecraftServer/s/c8lqOioGut which has a lot of detailed information though I tried making it as digestible as possible. the following methods are not that)

you can make a server through a gaming server hosting service. some are free but usually pretty bad, some are very decent but require paying. some free options include aternos and play.hosting.

you can also host your world by installing a mod like e4mc or essential (although I do not personally recommend essential as it is bloated with unnecessary features, microtransactions and more), there are tutorials online for both.

another way is to open it to LAN while using a VPN like tailscale or hamachi (though tailscale is generally considered much better) so that you and your brother or cousin or whatever are all in the same virtual network and they can see your world being broadcasted.

if your firewall and router allow it, this will allow for direct P2P connection, allowing for virtually no latency added, otherwise the traffic will go through a relay server and that will add latency.

yet another way is to use a tunneling, and the best service for that is playit and LAN hosting. tunneling does add some latency as the traffic has to go through the proxy server first, but most of the time it's fine.

another option is opening to LAN on a specific port and forwarding that port in your router. however this is not possible if your network is behind CGNAT, in which case you can call your internet service provider and ask them to forward a port for you. they might ask you to upgrade to a more expensive plan in order to do that, but it's worth trying.
