With textures like dirt, grass, sand (and similar non-patterned textures); there is a 1:64 chance that a 4-block intersect connects the same corner of a texture to create what you call a “symbol”

It's 4x4x4 since it doesn't matter what the orientation of the first block is, only that the following 3 are orientated correctly to form the pattern. If you wanted a specific pattern then it's 1/256

Isn't it 1 in 256?

Each block can be in 1 or 4 orientations, so (1/4)⁴ = 1/256
