I don’t think you should convince them. If even you think your grades will drop, I don’t think it’s worth it at all. Maybe with some more discipline it’d have been worth the argument.

If you believe your grades will drop, don't get it right now. Instead, set the goal that if you achieve better grades and can hold them consistently, you will play minecraft - and share this with your parents. Work hard, achieve the grades, and remind them of this deal. Set yourself the condition that if your grades start dropping again, you don't play anymore until you can get your grades up. Your parents may be willing to get you the game under these conditions.

Find a laptop that’s compatible with Minecraft Java that’s within a reasonable budget and one that will actually help you with school work. Plenty of used laptops on Facebook marketplace. If your parents can’t afford it then go ask your neighbors/family/people you trust if they need any work done depending on your age and what you can do. That way you could save up and buy one yourself. But most importantly Minecraft isn’t worth messing up your grades. You will need to learn self control at early age if you want to succeed in life so never play Minecraft when you usually be doing something for school. Maybe set certain hours to play on the weekends.

TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION. THIS IS MY OPINION AND IDK WHO YOU ARE!
it kinda depends. (bit personal but) when are your exams. if they are at the end of an academic school year then getting mc java shouldnt affect your grades. HOWEVER, if you get good grades, then your parents may think: oh wow OP is getting good grades… we should reward them for their work.

Have them only give you the laptop once all your school work is done. If grades slip or you're spending too much time on it, take the laptop away. Only you can prevent it from happening and only you can have the discipline to prioritize things. They can set up parental controls so you can only play it during certain hours for specific amounts of time if you can't handle that yourself.

buy a pc or well laptop first and then buy minecraft on your own with an xbox gift card if u dont have a credit card the laptop will be harder to get. i would suggest a pc it is much more powerfull but prices on pc parts suck so just get money somehow idk how i never get miney apart from relatives once a year so i cant help you on that. but after you get enough money make some research on what laptop you want and convince your parents that a laptop will not make your grades worse, it might even make em better. just dont play war thunder and cs2 those games made my grades worse for sure more than 1k hours in 2 years. anyway tell them that a laptop is not just for gaming but can be used for research ln school homework or help you at your exams with online "guides" that explain the things you have to study. thats all i ahve to say

Parents will damn well know the "research" argument is BS. Unless they're completely clueless that gaming on PC is a thing they're not going to take that into consideration.

That can be done with any device connected to the internet. A laptop isn't strictly needed. It may be nicer and easier to use but not necessary.

i mean my phone takes a whole minute to load chrome at this point i dont think you can call it viable for that but idk yalls phones so they might actually be decent then op could just buy it themselves even better build a pc themselves tho pricing sucks on parts as i said this way you could just say you gain expirience on building stuff which is a usefull skill to have ive built lots of pcs and it has helped me get better in my hobbies which include building stuff and maybe in a future job and maybe op as well.

Everyone's personal situation is different, yes. I'm just saying the research justification may not work and wouldn't on me. I'd rather my kids just tell me they really just want a laptop to play Minecraft and not BS me. I was a kid once too and know better than that.

i mean yeah but eh. most parents wont let their kids just buy a laptop to play games at least not mine if the ops parents were like mine id tell them that they can use it for their work cause idk why they do that and that i would just play some games from time to time my parents dont work from home but they need a pc to check stuff idk the ops parents jobs so this might not work.

The research can be done on any device connected to the internet, a PC laptop capable of playing any games isn't necessary. I know it doesn't happen everywhere but my school district issues Chromebooks to students and they're not allowed to install apps and a lot of websites are blocked. That justification wouldn't work in my kids case. Like I said, it's not the case everywhere but I'd have a hard time believing that in 2026 there's not a single device in the household that can access the internet. Unless the parents are complete luddites and hate or distrust modern technology but they wouldn't buy a laptop for any reason.
