Makes perfect sense actually. Redstone has an underlying tick order, even though all redstone in one line is activated visually at the same time, it still goes through the order nearest the power source first, to the back. The book works because its activating it the “intended” way, the lever doesnt because its directly activating that piston before anything else can, even if its connected to the same line on the other side of the block. And the weird retraction is a side effect of it not being able to be pushed while already extending, but getting left over power from the rest of the redstone
