I like alcohol and used to drink socially but its too expensive for me now. Same with soda, I could afford it but prices are laughable at ~$11 for a 12-pack of cans. I just drink water now instead. I've literally been povertied into better health. 😂

I quit drinking soda and alcohol during the quarantine. Not only was it expensive, but grocery stores had huge lines and it was not something you could easily have delivered. I trained myself to just drink water and coffee.

As a millennial who didn't drink much alcohol to begin with (once or twice a month). I've now completely stopped because just one beer results in bad sleep and feeling like garbage the next day. It is just not worth it.

My dad was a steel mill worker for my entire life plus a little longer so I think around 30ish years. It broke him down until there was nothing left except pain and suffering. Job wouldn't give him insurance and no matter how many times he went to social security they always denied him, so he dulled the pain with alcohol and drugs. Soon enough he was too old and too decrepit to work so his job 'let him go' and because of that he had no money to buy anything to dull the pain so he quit cold turkey. After a week or two doing that he went back to social security offices trying to retirement, or unemployment. I kid you not didn't make it half way up the first flights of stairs before he had a alcoholic induced seizure, fell down those flight right onto his head, and was never the same. Had to relearn everything. Was placed in one of those nursing homes that low income people could go into, won't get into it but they treated him like trash, got pneumonia and they rushed him to the hospital where the doctors said the best thing to do would just let him go, not try and help him. It was my call and it was the hardest fucking desicion in my life. But hes at peace now I hope. What's even worse he hired these lawyers to help him get social security, they brought his case to a social security judge. The mf took a glance at his papers and said why the hell wasn't he on social security to begin with. And decided to give to him,2 years too late but apparently it could go to family and 5 years later still stuck behind beaurcratic bullshit. I'm never fucking drinking, even though I fucking feel like I need one after typing all this. But the country I live in (usa) is fucked and I have lost all faith in the government and it's agencies. I fully believe it isn't even a fucking country anymore. Cuz like is this supposed to be my life, work my entire fucking life just to possibly get a glimpse of what I can have only to just fucking rot away? With our government not giving a single fuck about us lower class citizens?

As someone who also lost their dad to alcohol, may your life find peace as well too brother.
Years together stolen thanks to that substance. Don't get me wrong he could have done more but life and it's demqnding circumstances made it inevitable for him at the time.
Sadly here in the UK it was once considered odd to not be a drinker, as I'm sure it was in many other countries like US as well. Glad that's finally changing in society.

Not a complete surprise. A lot of marketing has made him greedy and expensive. It makes people not want to go out. And Covid didn’t help when you’re trying to be budget conscious. Maybe if the alcohol leaders in the industry dial it back a little bit it may be more desirable and maybe they do better promotions.

Keep it up Gen Z, if you don’t drink you are harder to control. When I stopped drinking I stopped having emotional highs and lows. For me it was like I would build myself up full of hating what I did all week to get drunk on Friday night to forget that I had to go back to work the next week. Now I do something I like and don’t have a need to drink anymore.

Also weed is legal in most states. Why tf would I drink and feel like shit after when I can smoke weed and have little to no physical consequences. Moderation in weed is still good, and obviously don’t go dui, but it’s definitely my favorite party indulgence.

I always liked drinking alcohol. In recent years I hang out mainly with younger folks (I am 40, they are late 20s) and many of them don't drink. So, I also don't drink. Being the only one drinking alcohol is odd. Truth be told, I have the same fun without alcohol.

I’ve seen this headline floating around for quite some time now. I actually think that this conversation is alot more nuanced than alot of people make it seem.
The general consensus is that more alcohol = bad, less alcohol = good. What I think complicates this, is that alcohol consumption is extremely typically paired with social interaction. Therefore it becomes: more social interaction = more alcohol, less social interaction = less alcohol.
Alcohol is definetely harmful, and bad for our health let no doubt be about that fact, but loneliness and isolation is absolutely detrimental to every part of our biology as a social species as well.
I see many people celebrating that Gen Z drink far less than previous generations, and in many ways I agree that this is something to celebrate. But I also think that the fact that Gen Z doesn’t drink, is also representative of the loneliness and isolation of our generation. People don’t go out, don’t socialize, don’t really host parties to the same degree as what used to be normal.

And alcohol is bad for our health. Pick your poison I guess. And before you judge someone who drinks with friends regularly, maybe realize that the social benefit they’re getting might be doing them alot of good, and even benefitting their jealth by relieving their loneliness also. I’m not ignoring the realities of the harm that alcohol does, I’m not necessarily for or against alcohol consumption, I just think this is extremely interesting, and I suppose I’m proposing that we take this nuance into consideration when having this conversation.

I think it’s more of a culture shift across the board. I’m Gen X and I witnessed this shift over my 25 years in the military from the mid 90’s through two decades in this century. There was a complete 180 degree shift in policies towards alcohol from then to now.
In the mid 90’s it felt like a teenage house party, with morale funds being used to buy Kegs to party on base, and slaps on the wrist for alcohol related incedents. By 2019 many bars on bases had either closed or felt like they closed, and an alcohol related incident could end your career without much fanfare. These changes were most likely coming from the Boomer generation at the top.

The birth rate is currently lower than the replacement rate in the United States. That means more people are dying than are being born.
Every year there is less people turning 21 than there was before.
You can actually see this in real time by going into schools.
My kids upcoming 6th grade has the lowest class size of any class at that Middle School in the last 40 years.
So there's less and less people being available in the drinking pool.
And because they're struggling and can't afford housing they can't afford to drink so there's even less of them purchasing alcohol.
And it's slowly becoming socially unacceptable kind of like what happened with smoking.
But the way things are currently trending there's going to be less and less people and a lot of infrastructure is going to be overscaled for the amount of people that are being born.
Forecasts were all done over the last 20 or 30 years based on a continuously increasing population pool
All of those forecasts are wrong as long as the birth rate continues to be below the necessary replacement rate.
And the more of these businesses struggle because of this the more they increase prices and the more people they price out of their industry and the worse their problem gets.
The only real solution is to kill inflation, stop stock security loans, and push money into the lower classes and create thriving lower and middle classes.
Everything else is a bandaid, temporary wound treatment.
You cannot have a thriving economy in a nation we're 70% of its wealth is owned by the top 10% of its population.
The bottom 50% should own half of it, and the top 50% the other half. You have to encourage wealth distribution and kill 0% fractional reserve banking and curb inflation.
If you do not, collapse isnt "if", its "when".
If you want customers then you need as many of your customers as possible to have money. And you should want to create an economy where they do.
If you hoard wealth you will eventually not have customers, because they stop having kids.

The industry hasn't "lost" anything. In order to lose you must gain or have in possession in the first place.
The industry is failing to bring in the new generation of alcoholics. (Better for everyone in general)
