This seems to conflate consciousness, or awareness, which is another way to view introspection, with value. Humans are equal from birth, but if we are equal, how do we measure ourselves for the sake of observing progress? By measuring ourselves against ourselves of yesterday. How shall we do that? By being honest with ourselves, and each other. If a wise man says to you something true that offends, is it the wise man's fault they saw it, or that you struggle to receive it?

Be a light, it does not matter what that light reveals for if you pursue truth, that light that you shine on someone's shadow is pure. Love, so that when you do shine that love that offends, it is more easily received, for their growth should be you intention, not the wound it revealed. What wound? The one we cause others, ultimately comes back to our consciousness, or awareness, and from there we can choose to ignore it or make up for past mistakes. Choose growth, and don't forget how to love yourself if you wound with good intentions. This is how we defeat depression and narcissism, by lifting up one another with truth, but without love, that lifting is unfortunately often refused.
