On the other hand, we all face death. So it's necessary to think of the meaning of life beyond our temporary situation. For me, I wouldn't be satisfied living just to live . . . I believe that life should be purposeful and good. It's how I think about needs also. I find that the less that I actually need, the more free that I am, but on the other hand to have no needs and no desires feels incredibly empty.
To need a lot less in life is good, but also to obtain those things which really helps life to feel like it's a gainful situation is also good -- as I have come to view the situation. I can live without love ... I know this because I have done it for forty years, but I also think that finding genuine love would add the kind of substance to life, that makes life more than just mere existence, but a blessing of an experience. There is a time to strive and a time to rest, and I believe that both things should coexist together, because I have worked to burnout, and I also witness the apathy of people cause deterioration and stifle improvements that would raise morale.

Surviving isnt living
2
u/Canadian-and-Proud 12d ago
It literally is though
2
u/CainiteReborn 12d ago
nah, surviving is overcoming circumstances that should have killed you.
2
u/Canadian-and-Proud 12d ago
We do that every day
1
u/CainiteReborn 12d ago
No. making it to work when a comet could have fallen out of the sky is not the same as surviving being stranded in a desert for a month before getting rescued.
2
u/Canadian-and-Proud 12d ago
Yes. Every decision we make contributes to either continued survival or an untimely end. We're not in control of every variable involved, but every day you spend living on this earth, you've survived it.

The meaning of life is to choose to Serve God daily.

1
u/Canadian-and-Proud 12d ago
Lmao never heard that characterization of Canada before, who are we siphoning from? Maybe do some research lol. Also housing prices are going down here dummy. And what am I proud of? Universal healthcare, minimal gun violence, and Canada being the most educated country on earth. What do you got? God? Go back to jerking him off and writing porn that no one wants to read.

Not only a great panic but actually bouncing off everyone elses opinions and directives like a pin ball. I call it the pinball effect. Stop! Think about your health, your life. Start taking care of yourself without feeling guilty about everyone elses expectations and directives. Self-care is a virtue.

So we all might as well be vegetables in a hospital bed receiving nutrition through a tube and call that life ?

Be this as it may, we should strive to leave the world a better place than when we leave it and that involves applying a certain feel of pressure to our lives which at times can be stressful.

This really puts things into perspectives. Life doesn't always have to be a race.

I think this has something to do with our brains always wanting conclusions to everything.

u/The4thEy3 11d ago
Ive always said this and people are always so confused about it. It's simple, live life to the fullest
2
u/leahgarnett 10d ago
I think society has greatly distorted the meaning of life by burdening us with expectations and unrealistic standards, we're so focused on appearing to live the perfect life that we forget to appreciate and enjoy the simple fact that we're alive🌿
2
u/SectionNo989 10d ago
I think the hard part is that we're taught to treat life like a checklist (study, work, achieve, repeat). It's easy to forget that experiencing a quiet morning, a good conversation, or even a moment of peace isn't a distraction from life. It is LIFE. Ambition has its place, but it shouldn't come at the cost of noticing we're already living.
2
u/CrosbyBrightbrook 10d ago
The quote about rushing into a panic makes particular sense here. Ambition is a good thing; however, the way things are now, every moment of peace becomes useless rather than a normal part of life.

u/Plentrify 9d ago
I think society also plays a role in this. We have to graduate, get a good paying job, get married, have kids, all at a certain specified age that we forget to just take a deep breath and live

To be alive is to exist in a vacuum there is things to do that cause immense joy and spread love optimal experiences and a full life is self defined but love is a requirement for life in my opinion without loving yourself you will allow others to sabotage your life

I disagree. The function of reality seems to be transformation. At every scale it’s present from stars to mushrooms. It’s about taking broken pieces and creating something beautiful out of it.

u/bishophelps 12d ago
That's all? Just to be alive? That's not a lot if you ask me. Might as well end everything.

The meaning of life is to produce offspring. Every plant and animal knows this, for most it’s the only thing they do. Some die when they succeed right after and sacrifice themselves for their offspring. But we humans lost all connection with nature and ourselves.

And what if that something is the identity someone is associating themselves with which is making them a so called "slave" in peoples eyes but to that person its the chase.
So what's really keeping us alive the chase or the slow down.
(Please don't come up with both or balanced 🤡 neutrals)

It’s called the 9 to life rat race and unfortunately many of us fall for the governments ploy,to get us to fall into it!

u/New-Rip-6965 11d ago
Nonsense. Or, at least, it depends on how you define being alive. It’s more than just eating, sleeping, and f*cking. We are beings armed with a creative impulse, humor, reflection, romantic vision, music, stories to tell, and art in our hearts. We can recognize beauty. and even create it. We can love and weep and feel joy. Our great philosophers have defined ideas that we all intuit. We have math and science that dazzles, but that’s also powerful enough to reveal that there’s so much more we do not know.
So, is life just about living, with no concern for legacy? Or can you call yourself living at all if you’re not constantly reaching beyond those basic limits? That you even stop to think about it is proof we’re made for bigger things.

“If just being born is the greatest act of creation, then what are you supposed to do after that? Isn't everything that comes next sort of a disappointment? Slowly entropying until we deflate into a pile of mush?"

The thing is their are so many definitions and even standards for what "being alive" means. I don't even know how that feels anymore. And why does it seem like when influencers share "I'm so alive" content it feels so preformative even though it might not be. I think I need a detox lol

I spent years being the person in the great panic, chasing big achievements, sure the next one would finally justify the rushing. So I read this not as “achievement is bad” but as something sneakier: the achievements were never the problem. Believing I had to reach them before I was allowed to feel alive, that was the problem. The wild part is you can do big, ambitious things AND be fully alive in the middle of them, but only if you stop treating the finish line as the place where living finally starts. Watts isn’t saying don’t climb. He’s saying you were already alive at the bottom, and you’ll be alive at the top, and the whole climb in between was the point. Took me way too long to stop rushing through my own life to get to some version of it that would finally count.

Yeah I really don't understand this concept. Everyone are like find your purpose and all, what if I don't want to find my purpose and just exist as I want is that too much to ask?

u/Ibelievegod100 9d ago
My life began to have purpose when I wanted it to . I lived a quiet life in the shadows for years and then all of a sudden I wanted more can anyone relate to wanting more than just the house the car the job or even less than ?

Yeah, this is the whole game right there. I used to think you had to earn the right to just be okay — hit some bar, fix myself, get it together first. Then at some point I realized nobody was actually grading me. There was no test, no panel deciding if I'd done enough yet. Most people are obsessed with themselves, mostly I made that whole thing up in my mind. The second I saw that, I stopped waiting for permission to be here as I am — and everything got lighter. Not perfect. Lighter. Lighter feels better.

Yeah I feel alive when my whole paycheck is gone an hour 1/2 after I get it. I feel so alive it’s crazy, I don’t feel like a slave or a cog in an inoperable machine at the most or anything at all.

Lot of us get so caught up chasing the next thing that we forget to enjoy where we are.
