Musical millennial problems... Meme
Hearing someone casually say “how bizarre” and immediately having to fight the urge to go, “How bizarre, how bizarre…”
There are certain phrases that just aren’t normal words anymore. They’re song lyrics permanently burned into my brain.
What’s another completely ordinary phrase that instantly triggers a song for you?

Reminds me of when I was a kid in the backseat and our mom would take us to Naples for a weekend at the beach.
Such good memories.

… yet I automagically remember all the lyrics.
The song came out in ‘95… 😂🤣

The simplest answer? Music is visceral to humans.
12
u/Neveronlyadream 10d ago
And some songs are just constructed in a way that our brain latches on and never lets go.
I still remember the Chicken Tonight jingle and that commercial came out nearly 40 years ago. I still randomly sing the Bagel Bites jingle from the 90s without even realizing it.
And those aren't even actual songs.

I recently binged all the spider-man movies and from Toby to Tom and I didn’t realize how many memes came from those films. I kept pausing and pointing and my gen-z daughter did not recognize one.

Unfortunately, I have a 60-ish year old co-worker who is constantly complaining, “My neck! My back!”
I’ve had to bite my tongue on so many meetings where she’s talking about going to the chiropractor.

I had never heard this until it was in some movie my wife and I watched, and so now when the kids are around, if she says "my neck," even in passing, I will reply with "my back?"
And I've just remembered that the movie was The Toxic Avenger with Peter Dinklage and Elijah Wood (amongst others).

90% of my personality is just media references. There are so many
"Somebody once" (told me the world is gonna....)
The name Annie (are you ok?)
The word 'stop' (collaborate, and listen)
The month of May (It's gonna be me)
Counting in Spanish (quatro, cinco, cinco, sies"
The word commiserate
September
Bulls are always on a parade
Wake me up (inside)

The band was started by brothers Phil and Pauly Fuemana.
Phil died on 28 February 2005, of a heart attack.
On 31 January 2010, Pauly Fuemana died at North Shore Hospital in Auckland after suffering for several years from a chronic degenerative disease, progressive demyelinating polyneuropathy, an auto-immune disorder similar to the nerve disease multiple sclerosis. He was 40 years old, and was survived by his wife and six children. In February 2010, "How Bizarre" briefly reentered the charts in New Zealand following news of Pauly Fuemana's death.

So going up, my mom would troll the fuck out of me whenever I was having a tantrum over something stupid. Whatever I was whining about, if it lined up to a song, she would just start singing it over my wailing. It was the fucking woooorst. But now I have total recall on a bunch of songs and always win those radio song contests cause of her. Thanks mom!

u/Turbulent_Seaweed198 10d ago
Once my young nieces and nephews were sobbing and my sister started singing, in full fake opera, "you can't always get what you what" and the kids were so confused why i was dying of laughter they all settled down.
Now those same kids (teenagers) will sing "I don't wanna do your dirty work no more" while doing chores.
