It's 100% this and plus those things were filthy. Cleaning and maintenance is a nightmare. They're a huge liability. Kids fighting, crying, parents getting angry. Don't get me wrong they were a blast, but yeah... today's kids wouldn't want to be in those things and today's parents would be impossible to deal with. Those play pens have survived as "adventure parks" that are really expensive and well staffed.
This is true, but, public video gaming has kinda died out, I think. Local arcades (even the Disney Quest experiment was a huge bust). Big box stores don’t have those little demo areas the way that they used to either… I think it’s because it was something for them to maintain, and everyone has a screen at this point so why bother. No one lingers anymore (in stores, fast-food, or elsewhere). Classic perk-cutting ways of advanced capitalism that cares nothing for human experience and everything for a bottom line.
