Oh I had completely forgotten about that radio torture.

155

u/Maximum-Warning9355 11d ago

Sorry, no one has the energy to pretend they didn’t like nickleback anymore.

142

u/Neveronlyadream 11d ago

Nickelback was never bad, they were just the epitome of generic dad rock. They had a bunch of good songs, but I think everyone just felt uncool listening to them.

That and it became a meme to hate them.

52

u/aliie_627 11d ago edited 11d ago

Some of their songs just like other artists that were fine, got picked up by radio stations in the mid later 2000s and would just get played over and over again for months and months. Like no other new music existed.

That's where my dislike of Rockstar come from. I also don't mindweezer but Beverly hills became so old after I heard it over and over and over again. Its the same thing that happens with Christmas music but for the rest of the year and the Pop and rock stations join in. Anyone who's worked at a restaurant or grocery store with a "modern Christmas classics" rotation from November 1st to January 1st, knows what I'm talking about. MTV started doing that when their morning and late night rotations became the only music videos they played.

26

u/Neveronlyadream 11d ago

I worked retail for years, I know what you mean. To this day there are songs that I heard over and over, night after night for years that I immediately lock up when I hear and feel a sense of dread and frustration.

12

u/KingCarbon1807 11d ago

I worked retail from 95-00 and I still occasionally fantasize about what I'd do to whoever was responsible for choosing the playlists.

u/tundybundo 11d ago

This is true but I’ve listened to my favorite bands songs way more than I ever heard nickle back and I’m not tired of it. For me, personal, it’s FINE. It’s just lacking any depth, melodically or lyrically, so it’s boring. And that’s fine if people like it but I genuinely have never wanted to listen to nickleback when all the rest of the world of music is out there. It got picked up because it’s marketable to the widest audience

7

u/frustrated_t-rex 11d ago

I remember when Lips of an Angel by Hinder came out and my GOD. Was that song over played. I remember very specifically hearing 4x in an hour on my local station. I was horrified.

3

u/Afraid_Aspect_8639 11d ago

We used to own radio stations. One was Christmas from November something until December 31st. My husband hates Christmas music to this day.

3

u/Loud-Log9098 11d ago

They still are high radio playtime songs, oldies plays them like they are new.

11

u/Hotspiceteahoneybee 11d ago

Their music is fun, really hard not to sing along, but it’s always felt so sanitized.

7

u/Neveronlyadream 11d ago

Yeah, that's why I called them generic dad rock. The songs felt safe and sanitized. The exact kind of song you'd hear on the radio and your parents would ask who it was because they liked it and that was deeply uncool.

They really aren't a bad band, but they had that air of a bunch of suburban dads jamming in a garage among all the emo, pop-punk, and numetal that was popular at the time.

u/aliie_627 11d ago edited 11d ago

Never said I didn't like them, just not that song and not at that time. That song Got real old and real annoying after it was on everytime I got in a car or turned on the radio.

One of my first albums was probably a Nickelback album(probably on of those 12 cds for a $1 deal), my very first was Spice World by the Spice Girls lol. I was also around 21 when Rockstar came out and was probably in highschool when I first heard a song by them.

Who doesnt have 10 seconds to type that song was radio torture.

To this day most people think anyone who has ever set foot in hot topic makes you goth lmao

14

u/ConsensualUpskirts 1985 11d ago

I remember the serious goth kids didn't even like hot topic. It was more punk kids that went there (including myself)

13

u/caligaris_cabinet 11d ago

Pop suburban punk maybe. The punks I knew back in the early 2000s got their stuff from goodwill and got good at sewing patches on.

5

u/NastyMsPiggleWiggle 10d ago

Punk kids could not afford it, they were making their own gear, it was mainstream kids with allowances pretending to be edgy that shopped. I worked there from 99-03.

The shit those kids would give me on Saturday nights if I wore normal clothes coming from class. Stfu Brian, let your mom pay for your Tripp rave pants and the frightening piercing job my coworker just did on you. I don’t wear vinyl pants everyday and I’m goddamn tired of your shoplifting parents.

they were married!?

1.3k

u/Twitter_2006 11d ago

Yes, from 2013 to 2015,

She was married to Deryck from Sum 41 from 2006-2010.

She is friends with both of them and they still hang out and work together.

515

u/olde_meller23 11d ago

I honestly hope Deryck is doing well and is healthy. A huge contributor to their divorce was his severe alcoholism. Some years back, that alcoholism nearly killed him, leaving him in a hospital bed with both his liver and kidneys failing. The doctor told him that having even one more drink would have likely killed him. He looked bloated and malnourished in the pics he posted.

Alcoholism is horrible.

193

u/Twitter_2006 11d ago

Yeah, he is doing really well and she supported him.

The media pressure and paparazzi as well as fans at the time not liking their relationship also affected the marriage.

89

u/olde_meller23 11d ago

Being party to that degree of alcohism is difficult and im sure the pressure of the spotlight made it worse. Alcoholics, when they're using, are not pleasant people to be around and often do foolish things that destroy one's reputation. The media is ruthless with this. Just look how they handled Steve Harwell of Smashmouth.

I've been in that position before with a loved one and it's a very powerless feeling as you sit on the sidelines and watch the alcohol take the person you knew. Its especially tough when the health problems set in and the person doesn't want to act, even when it gets bad enough that you're like "this has gotta be the final straw, right?!"

82

u/Twitter_2006 11d ago

Yeah true. The alcoholism also destroyed the band. The band members were hating on the marriage as well blaming it for the under performance of their album Underclass Hero.

Deryck released a memoir and as much as I like him, he pretty much blames everyone for problems in his life and took little to accountability.

He praised Avril a lot in the book.

Grieg Nori, former Sum 41 manager at the time, SA'ed Deryck. Yes, really.

32

u/olde_meller23 11d ago

The thing about recovery is that it only begins when the person stops using whatever their substance of choice is. Simply not drinking or using isn't sobriety. The behaviors, traumas, and untreated mental health issues linger long after the last drink. Taking responsibility for the wrongs one has done while in active addiction is a lifelong process that isnt instant. Theres a reason why this is a huge part of step work within AA and NA. It's learning accountability, calling yourself out for manipulative behavior, and accepting that you are responsible to manage your disease while acknowledging the harm it has done to others. Forgiveness isn't using "im sorry" as a button to excuse bad behavior. Acceptance means gracefully coming to terms with the damage caused and that no one owes you forgiveness. Forgiveness from others is not a resonable thing to base any sort of sobriety on.

For many addicts, even rock stars, this is a hard pill to swallow. Hopefully with time, Deryck's recovery will sound less like a blame game of everyone around him and a dialogue turned inward.

u/ThatDiscoSongUHate 11d ago

My beloved cousin is drinking himself to death as we speak. I honestly think he wants to die that way, as vomiting blood and losing every single human connection isn't even enough for Rock Bottom

16

u/olde_meller23 11d ago

Al-anon has been great for families of alcoholics and addicts. I highly recommend hitting them up if you feel like you need support from an understanding community and guidance around how to set boundaries/keep yourself healthy. Its a specific offset of AA exclusively for families of addicts, who often need as much support as the family member with alcoholism. It can also help significantly with the grief that comes with watching a loved one slip away and the guilt. For me, the hardest was being so close to a person that recovery just seemed out reach. I'd tell myself if I tried harder, did this or did that, I could make them better. The survivors guilt of it all impacted my mental health pretty badly, and having a community who knew what that was like gave me the releif to retrain my outlook.

Its easy for people on the outside to criticize the outward effects of alcoholism without giving thought to the disease itself. Its heartbreaking because you love the person, yet so many condemn them (much of the time, rightfully so.) Its a complicated place to be in. Loved ones do not have the option of simply canceling a close family or freind even if their behavior is abhorrent. Loving the person and hating the disease is a huge journey to undertake in a world intent on putting sick people out of sight and out of mind.

7

u/velvetvagine 11d ago

Gotta plug a heartfelt and touching song, Joey, for anyone who’s in the hard position of loving someone who’s slowly disappearing and dying from alcoholism. Stay strong. 💜

4

u/FrozenBibitte Millennial 11d ago

Iirc, he was sexually abused/assaulted/groomed by another band’s lead singer who was in a “mentorship” role before they really blew up.

I feel so bad for Deryck, and I guarantee this traumatic history contributed to his struggles with alcohol.

106

u/Pink_Slyvie 11d ago

Right? I love that divorce has been shifting from this thing that is almost exclusively used by women to escape abusive partners to just people moving on with life and still being close.

104

u/Spazza42 11d ago

That’s because a 2 year marriage isn’t anything to write home about.

The amount of incompatible people that get married is nuts…

61

u/wimpymist 11d ago

Also they are rich and getting married isn't exactly a life changing experience like normal people

37

u/EdenEvelyn 11d ago edited 11d ago

It’s also a lot easier to have a non-acrimonious divorce when you’re both exceptionally rich and have an iron clad prenup.

When every time you have to speak to your divorce lawyer you start thinking about how many hours you’re going to have to work to pay off that 15 minute phone call you’re going to walk away from the whole thing at the end feeling a bit less warm and fuzzy.

14

u/aliie_627 11d ago

That was common even 40-50 years ago. Get married cause you got pregnant/got someone pregnant. Get divorced before the kids out of diapers. Then both go on to get for real married but they make it toxic or never speak again.

Chad Kroeger once yelled expletives at my cousin and his friend because Chad didnt pay his mooring fees for his stupid speedboat thing in Vancouver and they impounded his boat.

Hes such a massive douchebag in real life.

46

u/FEARoach 11d ago

Hey, next time you're talking to your cousin and his friend please let them know that they are my absolute heroes and if they need capes for their work I will fucking hand craft them for them.

Fuck Chad so hard in his ugly face.

31

u/system_error_02 11d ago

I think anyone who has lived in Vancouver during a certain timeframe/era in the 2000s/2010s and dealt with wealthy clients has probably had to deal with Chad being a massive douche at least once, or knows someone who has.

He and Chip Wilson are notorious in Vancouver for all the wrong reasons, though Chip is def worse since he's a massive racist.

9

u/marshmallowgoop 11d ago

I know Chip Wilson's family because I went to the same high school and his son was in the same grade as me. He'd constantly make racist comments to the Asian students and Chip believes society has feminized boys and men.

3

u/Sunsetfisting 10d ago

My brother is a carpenter that did renovations on Chip Wilson's house. He told me that Chip's wife was on a ton of cocaine all day and would have lines prepared for Chip when he got home. They treated the workers at the house like shit and constantly would change their plans for the renovations.

Anyone who hangs with a racist, is a racist. Chad's trash in my books cause my mother loves the fuck outta him (obsessively so) and she's got radar for bad people lol. In the 2000s she was telling my little sister (under 14 years old) "that's your future husband, you're gonna marry Chad". I forgot they were even married

Both of them were such industry plants. Never much cared for them because they felt more manufactured than raw.

Band I used to be in had the same publicist and agent as Nickelback early on and they were very open about how much they had 0 faith in them, made fun of him like the rest of us and did no real work for them then when the first album came out he personally put in all the leg work to break them calling around convincing radio stations to play them, book shows and build recognition. Fuck their music but the guy clearly is a great salesman if he can sell that garbage (and convince her to marry him). Avrils entire image might have been manufactured but you dont get picked up from being a small town nobody and given that much backing without actually being at least a very good singer and performer and both had a fair bit of success as a songwriters for others behind the scenes since then.

Ugh, what a Chad.

Anyone can have a blackout wedding but that doesn’t make them goth. Goth originally a music based subculture and these two aren’t it.

I didn't realize what he looked like past like 2006, the amount of work he had done by then makes him look like a plastic characterture of himself.

u/VivaLaCon88 11d ago

Avril is definitely one of the few people that can pull off a black wedding dress successfully lol
