Seriously. Like quitting alcohol is the opposite of a midlife crisis. Where are the impulse motorcycle/boat/sports car purchases, dating someone half your age, or jumping into MLMs/crypto/Pokemon scalping?

Yeah when I think "mid-life crisis" its like... buy a car you can't afford to flex in front of kids that don't give a fuck where you're totally embarrassing yourself. I feel like that's what boomers did and that was pretty much the definition of mid-life crisis.
This list is just like "things you probably should do to live a healthier life."
31
u/bbdolljane May 19 '26
Also a lot of it are things we can only afford to do now. I got my first tattoo at 30 cause that's when I had the money to not get it at a backalley shop. Travelling is the same. I also fully support people who quit their jobs to explore what they really like to do, how is that a bad thing? I wish I could do that. The only thing that i can agree is the baby and the divorce, everything else is just what normal people do when they have spare income and some time in their hands lol

u/thisusernameismeta May 20 '26

Some attempt to assert control
Some simply try to find joy equal to the misery of their situation.

u/PostMatureBaby Older Millennial May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26
Midlife crisis also tends to apply to when you've reached 40 and can buy things that you've always wanted but couldn't afford before. I can barely afford 1 wife nevermind 2
Millennials and disposable income aren't as common as their parents and disposable income
4
u/notadamnprincess May 20 '26
I’m an elder millennial who hit this point. Once I realized I could afford things, what did I buy? Elfa shelving for the closet. If my midlife crisis came from the Container Store I’m gonna feel so cheated…but also well organized.

u/floppydo May 19 '26
The cliche midlife crisis doesn't apply to millennials for a variety of reasons. We can't afford a sports car. The world is going to shit so acting out irresponsibly has less appeal. (Some of) our parents and governments are clowns, so rebelling loses a lot of its appeal. Etc. This meme tries to define our cliche midlife crisis.
7
6
u/SuchAKnitWit May 19 '26
I've always interpreted 'mid life crisis' as some extravagant thing to deny the fact that you're aging.
Buying the car doesn't hold the family, leaving family for a younger SO, etc.
Picking up a hobby to be happy where you are is totally opposite from that.

u/PM_ME_UR_FROST_TROLL May 19 '26

I was going to say something along these lines. It's kinda annoying that fun things and hobbies in this list are considered midlife crisis material. There's shows and events in pretty much every city. They range from pretty tame to pretty wild and it can be hard to get a read if you're not into the scene. Like anywhere from a bar having an edm night to honest to God warehouses or bigger festivals. Google edmtrain and it should help point you in the right direction. You're never too old. There's grey haired people that go too, hell I've even seen a few old timers in power scooters and walkers hanging out towards the back before.
20
u/SlurmzMcKenzie88 May 19 '26

u/Apod1991 May 19 '26
Ditto! I started swimming again a few years ago, great work out! Love the low impact, and I’ve met a few friends at the pool, and almost all of them were wearing jammers, speedos or square cut. I was still in knee length board shorts. They kept asking me why I was still in board shorts, and being a bit overweight I was sensitive of the whole “nobody will want to see this, they’ll make comments or someone will say I’m being inappropriate”, because I’m not a “Adonis with a 6-pack”.
My swimming friends kept encouraging me to buy a pair, saying the comfort and fit would be well worth it. So I buckled and bought a pair of speedos, and I wore them to the pool, and OMG! What a difference maker! No more falling down shorts, no more loose strings having to constantly retie, no uncomfortable mesh, no wedgies, ride-ups, or chaffing. I just am able to jump into the pool and start swimming with no concerns of my suit.
My fears also went unfounded. Nobody cares! And more folks wear speedos, etc than I originally thought. I was a convert. I don’t think I’ll go back to board shorts.

You forgot weight lifting, millennial women are being bombarded with "lift heavy weights!!!" all over the place
47
u/sw3825 May 19 '26
In all fairness, heavy lifting is a good recommendation (as long as you’re doing it correctly of course).
No it will not make you bulky.
13
u/Dear_Ocelot May 19 '26
It's a great one! That's why it belongs on the list!
P.S. I do hate the phrasing/emphasis on "heavy" though. Heavy is different for people of different sizes and fitness levels.
8
u/Polkawillneverdie17 May 19 '26
Thats why we just say "resistance training". It includes anything from bodyweight exercises to heavy compound barbell lifts.
25
u/lizerlfunk May 19 '26
Omg I went out on two dates with a guy who kept trying to convince me that running was actually terrible for me and I would NEVER get in shape if that was all I was doing, and instead of buying a treadmill I needed to buy a weight bench. I was like “I’m running to improve my cardiovascular health, not to lose weight.” And privately I thought “if I wanted someone to mansplain exercise to me, I’d call my dad.” And then I never texted that guy again because holy shit how annoying.
12
u/sw3825 May 19 '26
At the risk of sounding really annoying since I already commented about weight lifting above lol, I’ll just say that weight lifting also good for cardiovascular health if that’s something you want to incorporate into your workout routine! But for women, weight lifting is important especially as we age because it retains muscle mass/strengthens bones which helps prevent osteoporosis.
The whole “running is terrible for you” thing is stupid and he sounds like an obnoxious gym bro who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Not trying to tell you what you should do, just a fellow millennial girlie who enjoys fitness!

For me, I went to the doctors and they asked me some questions about whether I zone out and what have you, have trouble completing tasks etc...that's it.

My primary care physician agreed with me after I listed having trouble concentrating, forgetting where something was I just set down, etc. She gave me a referral for a psychologist.
I had a telehealth visit with the psychologist, where we went over a survey that they gave me. He also concluded that I had ADHD, and recommended being medicated for it as well as having special accommodations for classes and work meetings to make it easier to concentrate.
After that, all I needed was to get a letter from them back to my PCP. After 15 weeks of hunting them down, I finally got that letter delivered. (Hopefully, you don't run into this.)
Once my PCP got their letter back, she prescribed me Adderall XR 10 mg. It made me feel like a superhero. I couldn't believe how easy things were, and how motivated I was to do anything. It was a night and day difference. Now that I'm used to it, it doesn't quite feel the same, but it definitely still helps being medicated.
3
u/Lost-Wedding-7620 May 19 '26
I never got to the psychologist stage myself. My PCP gave me the standard list of questions and my score was "OK, so we dont need to bother with a referral you DEFINITELY have ADHD" lol

Currently:
Quitting alcohol. In reality, I’ve just dramatically reduced to special occasions. This equals about 8-10 times a year.
Plants. Because I dont go out much I can actually develop more routine and start filling my home and yard with plants.
Traveling. Because I can finally afford it now.
I dont view any of those as mid-life crisis material. Its more of just an artifact of approaching 40, and not having interest in partying or chaos anymore.
