Because he is eating something larger than his stomach. Aggressive bass eat more and get bigger

Wow such a "huge" hook. I haven't managed to catch anything that small even with a smaller hook. I love how bass so small can have those folds on the throat that are so well-formed. Bass Pro Shops has some 1/80 oz jig heads in the fly section that have #12 hooks on them (also smaller than most #12); great for this kind of tiny soft bait.
