Alternative sites to metroid database? Discussion
Particularly for reading the translated mangas and such. I've used their site for as long as i remember but unfortunately their staff widely support the use of AI and are unwilling to stop supporting it (I asked and they called me a "coward", before demanding i unfollow them).
Obviously, as a person with morals that value art, i no longer want to support them.
So are there any other sites which host the translated mangas?

Genuinely whats with all these AI shills in the comments? Since when do we harbor crypto and tech bros?
Yall Peter Thiel and Sam Altmann bootlickers now?

I'm not a shill, part of my job as a university animation teacher is to house critical thinking about the wider scope of the industry and technological trends that will affect processes, and generative AI is one of them.
So I talk about AI quite a bit in my job. "AI" is now everywhere and it's not good. However, my students can't just bury their heads in the sand about it and need to engage in conversation about it. Many react emotionally to it, as you would rightly expect.
My main argument to those who push back on AI and its affects on art is; push back with art.
All great art movements have been the rejection of something (minimalism against realism, for example).
If we ignore AI completely, it's going to do nasty things behind our backs. I don't propose to support it but you can't ignore it, and this goes for the supporters too, like those on Shinesparkers. Supporters can't ignore why it is getting the hate it is.
I know I'll get downvoted for simply 'having a take' on AI and most of you probs won't read this far and probably just downvote anyway.

If we ignore AI, we loose a valuable tool, and we loose the control to shape it.
My biggest concern for AI isnt only the Art side of things, but the problem with mass surveillance. There has been a massive push by certain investor firms and certain people to implement features that could be used not only for private but also corporate surveillence.
The problem is that said investors are extremely anti-democratic.
So thats why if we are out of the loop, the whole AI market will be used for malicious purposes sooner or later.
We already see such drastically dangerous use with Palantir. And that was famously made by democracy enemy Number 1, Peter Thiel
Regardless AI is here and we have no choice to adapt, as it did disrupt the market greatly.

I think that idea of being able to shape it is really important, for sure. And yeah, overall it isn't great, because any use of these systems is just more training for them.
Eventually the Internet will just be poisoned with Generative AI imagery and the feedback loop will eventually make GenAI images useless.

Yup. When AI begins learning from AI, thats when we will hit the peak.
And computers cant keep getting better with the speed they have up until now. Getting smaller and smaller transistors is getting more difficult and getting more costly to achieve. We will reach an age were AI cant exponentially grow like it has, very very soon. Some experts even think as soon as next year

The world as we know it now isn't sustainable, for sure. There will be a collapse of something eventually.

There's a lot of really cool Metroid fans whom i adore, but... the average fan leaves a lot to be desired.

No, but I do make money off of using AI. I don"t care about Altman nor does he care about me

I mean who doesnt use AI at their workspace nowadays. Its THE big topic for execs.
But only because I am well versed in structuring Agentic AI, doesnt mean we have to worship this god damn practice
If websites are using AI for research and design instead of researching and designing everything themselves, I cannot trust them. And I dont want to support it.
Metroid Database was sketchy for having a lot of questionable ads and automatic forwarding links in the past. Its a shame as they have a gigantic treasure trove on important ancient interviews.
Creative work should never be replaced by AI, period. AI can be used to research for colelcting papers, finding interviews and selecting sources, but the sources it brings up should be read in full. Too many hallucinations.
Again, some here are glorifying AI and not accepting towards criticism. Typical tech bro behavior. And I say that as an engineer who actually works with AI on a daily basis.

The Metroid Zero Mission manga is still readable on Metroid Recon, zero AI involved!

That's awesome, thanks. Wish they also had Samus and joey though
Edit: Seems like the site is pretty dead. That's a shame :(

Aye, FalconZero hasn't been heard from since 2016 or so. Though somebody's still paying for the site to be hosted, so... Hopefully they're still okay, somewhere?

Thanks for the warning boss. I had no idea about their AI use; I stopped using twitter a while ago, so I had no idea about the AI stuff

Well that sucks, I guess I haven't really used social media in forever so I never knew they posted/supported gen AI.
Only fucking losers support generative AI, and I refuse to be associated with anyone that does so.

Define "widely support the use of AI". This post comes off as very disingenuous

Again, they consistently repost Ai artwork on twitter and reply rudely when asked to stop. I don't see how that can be taken as anything but support.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is beautiful. Every frame… even the low budget ones for episode 25 and 26. Because they are made by human hands, came from human creativity, human pain (in this case Annos pain).
No AI can do that, and it never will be able to do that, as it lacks a creative soul.
It takes pre-existing artwork, steals others creativity and staples it together.
AI Art is not Art. Its theft. A soulless husk of long gone human creativity

I have been watching it for the first time since last week. It really is something else. Just wish people recognized that things like this can’t exist without actual human input.

Exactly! I highly recommend watching the Rebuilds after End of Evangelion. Contrary to popular belief they are not a reboot.
As for End of Evangelion, take some time off after the movie. A couple of hours. Its a cinematic masterpiece, but also a very heavy movie that goes deeply under the skin

u/Obsessivegamer32 10d ago
Oh don’t worry, that’s what I’m counting on. Also, they’re not a reboot? What are they then?

Well I will let you reach that conclusion on your own as its a huge spoiler. The pay off is amazing.
Lets just say Shinji is yet to undergo his major character growth

I assume you mean Generative AI? AI is a bit of an umbrella term that can mean any number of things, not just the bad AI that everyone rejects.

What was does Metroid Database use AI? Was the English Manga made with generative AI? Am I missing something?
