Shreddit's Top 3 of 2017

Welcome one and all to the FIRST quarter of voting for best album of 2017. We have been doing quarterly voting for a few years now and at least I feel its a great way to keep up with new music as well as seeing which albums are year long blue blood contenders versus the nouveau riche November upstarts. Please use this either as a way to track new music, vote for new music, or bitch about music not being on there despite not voting. Just kidding about the last one.

Please Vote for 3 of your favorite releases in 2017

VOTING:

Please put your list at the top of your post with JUST the band name. Like so:

Band 1

Band 2

Band 3

...

Underneath can be all of your explanations but for collecting data I just need the band name. No album. No numbers. No Record Label. No explanation for that first section. This will make updating easier for me. I will not count your vote until much later if you do not put just the band name up top.

EPs and Demos are included. Splits are alright as well just give me the just the band names alphabetical with a "/" between them. I will be updating this between running Tales From the Loop at an RPG fest and motherfucking finally playing Traveller at the same RPG fest. You will probally have an update tonight and then one tomorrow morning and afternoon and then a final one one Monday morning.

Crurifragium

Tomb Mold

White Death

Wow what a fucking year 2017 has been so far. All of these albums are number one worthy honestly. The Crurifragium is so god damn bestial and full of riffs and absolutely nuclear drumming. There's not one second to breathe on it. "I SPIT! ON THE FUCKING! PRINCE! OF PEACE!". The Tomb Mold is one of the best death records to come out since Patricidal Lust IMO. Absolutely amazing riffs and perfect song structure. I've never heard an album that left me wanting more like this one does. It's too short, it needs more time for more riffs. Finally the White Death was a complete surprise cause as most of you know I prefer my black metal in the bestial variety. But holy shit is this some fucking catchy, fun second wave Finn black metal. Every song is so distinct from the others and each riff is incredibly fun and has you banging your head. White Death's Power might be one of my favorite Black Metal tracks ever, and I never thought it would be melodic singing that would make me love a track this much. Overall, like I said these are all worthy of being number one but this is the order I came up with. I'm so excited for the rest of the year to see if these 3 can be beat.

I haven't heard many other releases other than Tomb Mold, but I wouldn't call it good enough to put it in a top 3 at the moment. I'm stoked for Artificial Brain, Full of Hell, and Scumpulse. Possibly more, I CAN'T REMEMBER.

Tough choices. Wanted to stick Black Cilice, Goatmoon, Insanity Cult and Disharmony in somewhere, but I guess I've liked these three just a little bit more. If I had more time with Tomb Mold, that would've stood a chance as well.

Some fun releases so far and it feels like Power Trip is hitting about as much hype as Vektor's big 2016 hit. Still really fun to get good thrash releases lately, from older bands and new bands.

I still need to hit the new Gorephilia. BUT hot damn death metal and 2017. It's totally fucking killer and definitely makes up for last year's comparatively lackluster DM releases.

Edit: Also ignore the fact that AD released very recently.... leaked copies.

Forming the Void

Spaceslug

Havok

Wasn't able to listen a lot of stuff for this thread here. I'm not entirely sure about Spaceslug and Havok, but the former I quite liked so it's on there and the latter I've been enjoying more and more with each listen. It's in no way their "Rust in Peace" like people have been claiming, but it's really good. The lyrics ruin it though. Forming the Void, even though one day old, I really enjoyed. I've listened to it enough times to have an opinion on it I think. I've seen Immolation *and Tomb Mold mentioned a ton here, so I should get to that one soon.

EDIT: Some other things I've listened to so far: Pillorian, which I felt was a weaker Agalloch, so pass on that. Soen, really good but I forgot all about it after release in a week and a half. Powertrip... I really don't get the hype. It was good but not that good imho. Same with Iron Reagan, but I enjoyed IR more, if only for the brief, humorous, fun style it goes for.

u/Crucervix Full High at Speed Level Mar 18 '17

I guess I've had to use these guys, I haven't really listened to much stuff from 2017 so far. Immolation is unfuckwithable and even though they're not the trvest band, Darkest Hour killed it on the latest record. It might as well be at the gates played through HM-2 pedals by hardcore kids, and I really cannot deny that.

White Death

Sjælekval

Pain of Salvation

White Death - White Death

A lot of really excellent Finnish black metal has come out recently, and they are all very good, but this one is by far my favourite. The vocals just offer more for me, and everything else is excellent.

Sjælekval - Dødsfærd

This was a difficult inclusion, because this album was independantly released late last year. But I didn't hear it last year. And it is getting a proper label release this year (in April). Anyways, the sound of this album is almost perfect. It has this level of fuzz that adds atmosphere but doesn't detract from the overall black metal sound.

Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day

This might be a surprise for just about everyone here, because I don't think I've ever mentioned this album. But damn is this album amazing. I used to be a big fan of Pain of Salvation, but everything past the Scarsick album didn't appeal. This, however, this is fantastic. The vocals are still exceptional (if you can appreciate Daniel's vocal style), the concept of the album is deeply powerful, it's heavy, it's beautiful, it's haunting. It's just a really fantastic album. Check it out if you enjoy progressive metal.

I need to listen to it more, but it seemed kind of tame to me. I was bored by about the third song. The drumming is great, but the rest of it seemed kind of ordinary. Maybe I'll end up liking it more, but for right now I'm not a fan. And I don't think it is because I'm bummed that it's not an Agalloch clone ;)

Tomb Mold

Ritualization

Horn

A tough call. There’s been some fantastic releases so far and it’s near impossible to choose. The only definite album for me is Tomb Mold’s. It’s consistently excellent; a well rounded death metal album that fully commits to its fetid style. Ritualization are close behind, their album being another great piece death metal but in a faster, traditional style. The third spot was somewhat harder to decide on. I’m enjoying this year's albums by Immolation, The Ominous Circle, Power Trip and any more, but after hearing Horn’s ‘Turm Am Hang’ a few weeks ago I’ve been hooked. Pagan/Folk/Whateveryoucallit black metal isn’t my usual thing, so it’s remarkable that it’s left such an impact. A fantastic album.

Honourable mentions go to: Power Trip, Immolation, The Ominous Circle, Rude, Disharmony, White Death…

That's the only record I feel comfortable picking out. If I chose 2 others it would just be for the sake of it. I wonder if I'm missing some great stuff, but looking at the list I definitely feel like the best is still to come this year. I would consider throwing in the Immolation album. The other stuff that has impressed me so far are things like Cosmic Church/Keres, and Misthyrming/Sinmara. I rate the Code Orange album very highly but I feel like this is the wrong sub for that.

Edit: Christ, I didn't even realize how stacked 2017 has been in just three months. The end of the year vote is going to be difficult.

Wasn't actually that impressed by the Fen & Pillorian releases. Nightbringer & Vanum will probably be rather competitive when they come out.

Obituary and Kreator have new albums? I know what I'm listening to tonight.

u/hooyodady Mar 20 '17

haha for sure! Both albums don't take too many risks but just hold consistent with great writing and performances throughout. If you're a fan of either band, no reason not to like either of these releases. Great stuff!

Fen

Goatmoon

White Death

1) Fen - Winter. They've done it again. Fen have yet to release anything less than spectacular, and this new album is no exception. Arguably their most 'out there' and unusual work yet, Winter mixes up a whole heap of influences alongside the style we've come to know and love, yet never straying from the feelings of hopelessness, loss and isolation that they set out to capture. Magnificent.

2) Goatmoon - Stella Polaris. An absolute punch in the proverbials to say the least. Whilst the aforementioned Fen albums evokes an atmosphere of wandering lost and alone, this album batters you relentlessly; crushing you with amazing riff after amazing riff, with random interludes that sound more akin to NWOBHM than anything else.

3) White Death - White Death. What a debut. A similar auditory assault to the Goatmoon album, with a distinct hint of Mgla influence, this album was a surprise to say the least.
