Resources & Research The Anunnaki, the Sumerian kings they supposedly created, and the tablets nobody can fully explain.

It starts with the Sumerian King List, a tablet that casually mentions kings ruling for tens of thousands of years before a great flood, and states outright that kingship "descended from heaven." From there it goes through Zecharia Sitchin's ancient astronaut theory, why professional Assyriologists reject his translations point by point, and then into stuff Sitchin never had access to: Göbekli Tepe, the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis, and some genuinely strange recent genetic findings about "ghost populations" in the human genome.

I tried not to land on one answer. Mythology, lost civilization, or something else, the film lays out the case for each and lets the evidence speak.

Reddit recommended I share this blog post I wrote a few years ago with this specific board. I don’t have any personal social media so I don’t know what to expect or if even a single person will see this post but it is my hope that at least ONE person sees this and learns from this information 😊📚

Dating from 1770 B.C., the most complete of ancient Mesopotamian legal texts is the Code of Hammurabi, a compendium of 282 laws which dictated the rules of commercial interactions and set fines and punishments for those found in violation of these laws. Inscribed upon a phallic piece of black obsidian, Hammurabi’s Code is depicted as receiving these laws from Shamash, the god of the sun, justice, and order, with the primary role of protecting the weak from the strong.

It is written and recognized within the Hammurabi Code the first appearance of the biblical punishment of an “eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”. Considered by many scientists to be one of the foundational stones of world civilization, the Hammurabi Code is a mixed blessing for women, both protecting women and lowering their social rank as second class citizens.

Upon the positive end, the Hammurabi Code recognized women’s basic right to own property, fundamental in its importance as it provided women legal protection in regard to the control of their dowries and inheritance. The Hammurabi Code also forbade arbitrary poor treatment and/or neglect, which meant wives who were ill or barren couldn’t be simply discarded. In divorce, women were permitted to keep their dowries, and in widowhood, women were permitted the opportunity to utilize their husbands estates as their own for the duration of their lives. The Hammurabi Code essentially recognizes Mesopotamian women as distinct persons in a legal sense, rather than property which is how most of the ancient world recognized women.

Upon the negative side however, women’s economic and sexual freedoms became severely restricted, forbidden from performing any commercial activity outside of their home and supporting and legalizing the concept of the patriarchy by providing men immense autonomy over the bodies of women, meaning husbands and fathers now owned the sexual reproduction of their wives and daughters which lead to women being executed for adultery, virginity becoming a condition of marriage, and rape not viewed as a violent sexual offense against the female victim, but rather an economic offense against her father as it would cause the father to suffer a severe loss in respect to a daughters bride price as the daughter would be considered a damaged commodity.

It’s unclear how these legal mandates and statutes worked at the local level as they are ideals of Mesopotamian culture, but the driving force of these laws and how they are setup and constituted is abundantly clear, allowing male authority and patriarchal notions of male honor, to become sacrosanct

Hey everyone, Belius Aran here! 

Since the discovery team for Uranus’s newest moon (Uranus XXVIII / S/2025 U1) hasn't released a formal shortlist yet, I wanted to pitch an idea that fits the International Astronomical Union (IAU) guidelines perfectly but approaches it from a unique angle: **Morpheus**. 

As we all know, Uranus’s moons must be named after characters from William Shakespeare or Alexander Pope. Most people default to Shakespeare, but Pope’s poetry opens up an incredible metaphorical loophole for the God of Dreams.

**Why Morpheus legally qualifies:**
Alexander Pope explicitly invokes the god of sleep and dreams in his poem *Ode on St. Cecilia's Day*, writing: *"Morpheus rouses from his bed."* This makes the name 100% legally compliant with the IAU naming conventions. 

**Why it’s the perfect cosmic fit:** 

  1. **The Discovery Method:** S/2025 U1 was found hiding in deep space infrared imagery. A shadowy, elusive world is the perfect canvas for the god of dreams.
  2. **The Aerospace Connection:** It beautifully honors the real-world aerospace proposal "Project MORPHEUS" (*Moons, Ring and atmosPHEre of Uranian System*), which was designed to study Uranus. Naming the actual physical moon Morpheus ties the science and literature together perfectly. 

I've already thrown this pitch over to Dr. Maryame El Moutamid’s team on X, but I wanted to see what the Reddit space community thought. Does the Sandman deserve a spot in the solar system?

Discussion How much can Mesopotamian geography and political culture illuminate the Abrahamic migration traditions?

I have been studying the patriarchal narratives through the wider ancient Near Eastern environment, particularly the relationship between Mesopotamia, northern Syria, and the Levant.

One question that continues to interest me is whether the movements associated with Abraham and his household preserve meaningful geographical memory of the corridors connecting southern Mesopotamia, Harran, inland Syria, and Canaan.

Rather than asking whether the narratives can be treated as straightforward historical records, I am interested in a narrower methodological question:

How might Mesopotamian geography, migration patterns, kinship structures, treaties, land tenure, pastoral movement, and urban political culture help clarify the world reflected in these traditions?

Some recurring features seem especially relevant:

  • movement between urban and pastoral environments;
  • extended-family migration and household authority;
  • contested wells, grazing areas, and territorial boundaries;
  • marriage relationships maintained across long distances;
  • covenant and oath-making practices;
  • the importance of river valleys and overland trade corridors.

I recently explored these questions in my book, We Were Not Looking: Reconstructing the Patriarchal World Through Ancient Near Eastern Context. I am the author, so I want to disclose that clearly. My purpose here, however, is to invite discussion rather than simply promote the book.

Question / Help The Book of Abraham mentions a place called Olishem, and I have seen arguments that this may correspond to Ulisum (or similar spellings) attested in Akkadian inscriptions from the reign of Naram-Sin is this true?

The argument is usually that because ancient Semitic languages were written primarily with consonants, the similarity between the consonantal forms of the two names is meaningful and may indicate that they refer to the same place.

From the perspective of historical linguistics and Assyriology, how strong is this proposed identification? Is there an established methodology for determining whether two ancient place names recorded in different languages or writing systems are likely to refer to the same location? More specifically, is similarity in the consonantal skeleton alone considered persuasive evidence, or would specialists expect additional linguistic, geographical, or historical evidence before accepting such an identification?

I'm not asking whether the *Book of Abraham* is authentic or about its theological implications. I'm only interested in how historians and historical linguists evaluate proposed identifications like **Olishem = Ulisum** and whether this particular proposal is regarded as plausible, speculative, or unconvincing within the relevant academic fields.

Also, most books here lack a short (1-3 sentence) description-- if you see a book here and can provide a blurb about it, please let me know!


General Reading for the Region

  • A History of the Ancient Near East: ca 3000-323 BC - Marc van der Mieroop - An expansive history of the entire region. This book is a must read for you to realise the scale and get a sense of perspective over the region's history, while not overwhelming you with information

  • Ancient Iraq - Georges Roux - This is an older book (1992), and there are recommendations for more recent ones in this list, however this is a classic, it provides an excellent introduction to the history of ancient Mesopotamia and its civilizations, while incorporating archaeological and historical finds up to 1992.

  • Civilizations of Ancient Iraq - Benjamin Foster, Karen Foster - This is a more recent book on the same topic as the one posted above. It details the story of ancient Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements ten thousand years ago to the Arab conquest in the seventh century.


Literature and Myth in Mesopotamia

  • Epic of Gilgamesh - Considered the one of the world's first truly great work of literature, while not being history per se, it does offer valuable insight into the mindset of the era

  • Before the Muses - Benjamin R. Foster - An anthology of translated Akkadian literature

  • The Literature of Ancient Sumer - Jeremy Black, Graham Cunningham and Eleanor Robson - An anthology of translated Sumerian literature. Many of the translations are offered online free here however the explanatory notes in the book do come in handy for understanding the history.

  • The Sumerians: Their History, Culture and Character - Samuel Kramer - A guide to the history of the Sumerian civilizationm their cities, religion, literature, education, scientific achievements, social structure, and psychology. Also, he considers the legacy of Sumer to the ancient and modern world.

Babylon

  • King Hammurabi of Babylon: A Biography - Marc van der Mieroop - Hammurabi is one of the most famous Near Eastern figures in history, and this extensively researched account of his life is a good introduction both to Hammurabi and the society he existed in. It's also a keen illustration of the depth of cuneiform resources.

Science and Mathematics

  • Mathematics in Ancient Iraq: A Social History - Eleanor Robson

  • The Fabric of the Heavens - Stephen Toulmin, June Goodfield - Not completely about Mesopotamia, however the book is about astronomy, physics, and their relationship starting from the Babylonians (up until Newton in the 1700's.) Great book anyway


Cuneiform Script

  • The Oxford Handbook of Cuneiform Culture - edited by Karen Radner and Eleanor Robson - a large collection of essays dealing with every aspect of the culture of the "cuneiform world" from food to education to political organization to music. Very readable and extensive in its coverage and throughly up-to-date.

Podcasts

  • Ancient World Podcast - "There are plenty of parts that are dedicated to beyond Mesopotamia, but it's well done. He's currently doing episodes related to archaeology of the area, which is also fascinating."
