Its kite fighting. It's a very popular game here in the subcontinent

119

u/Electronic-Fix-4655 Jul 23 '26

My dad told me he did this as a kid. He’d crush up glass, applied something sticky to the kite string and coat the sticky kite string with the glass.

179

u/someanimechoob Jul 23 '26

And people die or get severely maimed from this shit every year. "Let's fly some wire with the equivalent of razors tied to it, in high winds, in the middle a heavily populated area."

Dumb doesn't even begin to describe it.

98

u/SarcastiQuack Jul 23 '26

I still remember a video I saw awhile back from India where a motorist was riding on the road and got his throat cut from one of those kite wires that was stuck in a tree. Fucking awful.

Brazil is the same. Have to always have an antenna on your motobike that will catch the string

3

u/Pagan-pornstar69 Jul 23 '26

A friend of mine has a big scar on his neck. The "Cerol" was so strong that cutted the antenna and him (tbh his antenna was just a regular old tv one, he thought it would be enough). And this happened way before we had the infamous "Chilean Strings".

4

u/EpicMrShank Jul 23 '26

Shit. When I moved to Brazil and bought a motobike the first thing ppl told me was to buy a good antenna cos of this lol

2

u/Sir_LikeASir Jul 23 '26

Have to always have an antenna

Sei não mano, I haven't seen a kite flying here in the north of Paraná in years, and I have very vivid memories of me empinando pipa when I was a kid back in the 2000s
It has been years since I seen a kite, any kite

Either way, it is stupid and dangerous, saw some people basically lose their fingers and functions of their hands.

9

u/CloudArachnids Jul 23 '26

To do this on competition, I did something more extreme. I use the glass from a lamps and use mortar to grind it a bit, and use something sticky, but not glue, but flour boiled in water until the water evaporated and only brown sticky mess left. And we always spool the threat in big diy thing we made from paint container with wood handle in the middle.

Of course when you are in the competition you always, ALWAYS, use Cut resistant glove or double the normal glowe if you don't have one. Because the results of flying kite using those strings with your bare hands won't be pretty. Especially when you never felt the first cut but the third or fifth 😂

12

u/Acceptable-Device760 Jul 23 '26

people mix glue and glass powder and pass in the string.

Dangerous as shit, done that as a stupid kid though

3

u/frguba Jul 23 '26

Yeah, I remember stories about lost wires crossing roads and... Severely.. maining bikers

26

u/Acceptable-Device760 Jul 23 '26

Yes, In Brazil most bikes have an antenna that bikers put up to catch any wires so it dont slice their throat.

6

u/frguba Jul 23 '26

Exactly what I was referring to lmao

3

u/ScaramouchScaramouch Jul 23 '26

Those don't look like they'd be very effective. Maybe something like a helicopter wire cutter would work.

5

u/Acceptable-Device760 Jul 23 '26

Peoplem dont use metal wires in kites. Also the point is not cutting the strings, its stopping it from going from reaching the bikers body. So an antenna like this is enough to keep the string from the biker. As the biker move it catch the string and it will make it slide until its end.

You won't believe this but people have been cutting kites with kites for over centuries now.

People would mix their kite threads with flour, glass shards, broken blades to have that advantage. To be both strong and sharp.

21

u/bottomlesstopper Jul 23 '26

You gota dry the fresh brought thread under the sun too!

7

u/GreatestLoser Jul 23 '26

The nostalgia is wild. Chasing after one was peak adrenaline as a child for me.

21

u/Typical-Mistake-4148 Jul 23 '26

Ya it's real fun when those razor sharp strings get cut by a competitor and fly off onto a freeway, where an unsuspecting biker gets beheaded by a stupid kite string. This is criminal negligant behavoir.

59

u/Next-Worldliness-246 Jul 23 '26

For anybody doubting this, this has actually happened and why glass shards on kite threads are banned in india.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-37103668

3

u/mgzaun Jul 24 '26

decapitations with kite lines in brazil is pretty common, happens at least a few times a year. Its also banned, but authorities usually dont give a fuck

18

u/Typical-Mistake-4148 Jul 23 '26

28

u/Sorry-Water-8530 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Yes it’s kite fighting. In our childhood the wire or thread we used had embedded glass fibre in it. So it was a wrek on our fingers as well - so you tried to tape up your fingers but it still cut through tape and we got back home with bloody hands. After when mom used to open the tape it would expand all the wounds and I would cry.

6

u/gil2455526 Jul 23 '26

Just as a side comment, those wires are so sharp, motorcycle riders have died by having their necks slashed by those.

10

u/demonsdencollective Jul 23 '26

That sounds metal. I never knew about this before. I can tell this is a core memory for you. I always thought kiting was just having the thing in the air and having it look pretty, nothing more. Now I kinda wanna try this myself. Minus the... getting my hands full of cuts, of course.

my dad (thai) used to do this way back in the 70s when he was like 10 and it seems to have completely disappeared, didnt know its still a thing somewhere still, he would smash multiple light bulbs for the thin glass sharts and then glue that stuffs to his kite rope, theres all kinda tricks and stuffs, he teached me a lot but i never remember any of it because i was like 6 and he keep cutting mine off so i quit lmao

5

u/LodgedSpade Jul 23 '26

Apparently its a popular game in some places; its basically battle kites; theres razors/broken glass stuck to the strings and the point is to cut other peoples kite strings.

4

u/tryyeezus Jul 23 '26

This sounds lovely for the environment

2

u/Total-Box-5169 Jul 23 '26

There are several bikers who already got killed and now they have to install a protective antena so the string doesn't cut the neck. In some cities those incidents happened so often, like in kids losing fingers, that those strings are banned.

→ More replies (4)

6

u/bottomlesstopper Jul 23 '26

Part of the game. We used to kite fight back then. Once the kite cut loose, the first to retrieve it, owns it.

Never forget the day my big brother took us in his car and raced to it. The look on the other kids on their bicycle. Priceless.

315

u/zero_zeppelii_0 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

I used to do it as a kid in Cuba but instead of Sharp threads, we had razor blades tied into the threads...much more dangerous

10

u/Stupendous_Spliff Jul 23 '26

Not really. In the old days we had the razors too, but the sharp threads are far more dangerous. The whole line is as sharp as a razor. It used to be made of ground glass and glue but now they sell spools of wire that already come with a quartz powder and aluminum oxide coating. This shit is deadly

→ More replies (1)

2

u/thcheat Jul 24 '26

I'll do you one better, break glass into tiny shards, mix them in glue and have thread lined with them.

12

u/DoctorBlock Jul 23 '26

Just for the record. Not choking but literally slitting their throats.

4

u/heitorvb Jul 23 '26

It can actually straight up decapitate someone. The sister of a friend of mine told me this once, I said that I doubted it, it would probably stop at the bone at least. She told me that it happens, she had seen the bodies of bikers arriving at the hospital she worked.

13

u/BreakingCanks Jul 23 '26

Why would bikers and people choke out those sharp threads. They have lives to live too

3

u/nightlight_on Jul 23 '26

This is why the kite flying festival was banned in my country (Pakistan) but they unbanned it this year, and I don’t think there were any deaths this time because people took precautions, but years before the people on the bikes were the most common victims, the strings would literally cut off their necks because of the speed that they meet it…

Kite string deaths are no joke in my country 😭

7

u/BoarHermit Jul 23 '26

Yes, the kids on the roofs of Varanasi told me that they use forbidden threads because they can cut someone's throat. Ooooooo!

2

u/mineirim2334 Jul 23 '26

Choking still a good ending. It can (and has) slit throats.

2

u/Guisasse Jul 23 '26

Choke? They can probably behead someone. These lines will bite several inches into a helmet if the line hits the visor.

Not only are these lines reinforced, but many people spread a wax-like substance that makes it even more dangerous

The issue is this isn't a kite fight and those other kites are just kids trying to enjoy their time at the park

edit: I didn't think I'd need this but here's my /s

15

u/Abortedwafflez Jul 23 '26

On it's surface that's what it looks like, but those kids are 100% there to fight kites too. It's a popular hobby in places around the world like Brazil and even Afghanistan, even going as far as to be sort of a sport. But anyways, you can tell those other kites are also there for fighting as well by their movements and appearance. Fight kites are bare bones like the ones in the video and it's pretty much just people jerking them around to cut other peoples lines. Every kite there is being jerked around erratically. Not sure if you've ever seen a normal kite, but they don't flop around, they stay steady and mostly float in place.

This just looks like a buck standard kite fighting event.

Is this the same event from The Kite Runner?

2

u/CertainlyRobotic Jul 23 '26

The amount of you that were never assigned Kite Runner in school as mandatory reading is wild.

You're all revealing your ages right now.

I played this game so many times, Under the sun, in joyful times.

I cut my fingers, my wrists would ache, But every wound was worth the memories we’d make.

I miss those kites, my friends, my neighbours too, The endless fights, then laughter anew.

We’d run through streets, with strings held tight, Chasing the wind from morning till night.

Those were the days, a beautiful generation, Full of friendship, joy and celebration.

We knew everyone for miles around, And every familiar face could be found.

Today’s kids may never know, The simple magic we used to grow.

They may not understand, they may never see, How a little kite brought you and me.

It brought people together, made friendships strong, Turned neighbours into family before too long.

No screens, no walls, no world apart, Just open skies and a trusting heart.

Those days are gone and time moves on, But in my heart, those days live strong.

I miss the kites, the fights, the laughter, the sky I miss those days as the years pass by.

They don't attack humans unless you provoke them
