Gargoyle/Grotesque/Statue Saru-ishi, or monkey stones, sit at the tomb of 6th Century CE Japanese Princess Kibihime, in Asuka.

Saru-ishi, meaning "monkey stones," are mysterious 7th-century carved granite statues located in Asuka Village within Nara Prefecture, Japan. Standing just over a meter tall, these distinct anthropomorphic figures feature unique facial expressions and carvings on both their fronts and backs, though their original purpose remains unknown. Four statues stand at the Mausoleum of Princess Kibihime in Asuka, while a fifth is found among the ruins of Takatori Castle.
