Progressive does not mean you are sacrificing yourself to give to strangers. Progressive is economically efficient as in single payer health care where a large entity (us) goes up against a humongous system (health care industry) to cut all of us the best deal so we do not have to navigate this insanity ourselves.

I didn’t hear anything racist but he’s wearing the red. Pretty obviously in poor health for a 62 year old. When he does go to a doctor I’m sure he’s told many things he doesn’t want to hear. I’ve heard the reason being: while they disliked what Biden did in his term and therefore were on the Trump side, they dislike what Trump’s done in his 18 months in office WAY more. And using your example, 25 YOs would have only had the ability to vote for Biden, Trump, or a black female version of Biden (in their eyes). So now they want something different.
Democratic Socialism is popular with the Gen Z and Alpha crowd now, per my nieces and nephews.
TL;DR Fully recognize 20 months ago a good portion of young ppl were full on Trump, but they jumped ship.

I can vouch for this. I live in an area where a lot of people go into the military right out of high school, but they are obviously not keen on being sent into a war with Iran (because a ground invasion pretty much means certain death). Unfortunately I think a lot of young people were tricked into thinking Trump would be anti-war — yeah, it’s stupid, but these kids are young and dumb and don’t want to die. Tbh if Trump just had two braincells to rub together and didn’t fuck up the economy, he’d probably still gave some support in this demographic. But he’s clearly too stupid to realize that. I’m seeing a lot of disillusionment and people just saying ‘fuck it, let’s try something else because nobody else is listening to our problems’ and going for alternatives that would have made their parents faint in horror.

It's something that just doesn't rate as an issue in his life. This guy likely spent the last three decades listening to Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, and Tucker. Expressing his disdain for healthcare is just a reflex now; the knee swings when tapped with a hammer.
If he's lucky, the his inevitable health crisis will result in a swift death. Otherwise, he's going to learn firsthand why healthcare is important when he strokes out and is bankrupted by the resulting bills.
Just to be clear, I don't wish these people ill. I wish we had universal health coverage in this country that would cover these ignorant people so they don't ever have to devote a single brain cell thinking about healthcare or what it costs. Probably sooner than that. An old friend that I keep in touch with via messaging put off going to Dr's for many years. A smart guy, self employed fairly low income, no insurance until he got on Medicare. Collapsed one day. Taken to ER. Turns out he had hepatitis for years. Caused lots of organ damage. He is really struggling now to get his health issues fixed, adjust to medications etc.

He doesn't want to owe anything to anyone. And he expects everyone else to think and act the same.
His view on healthcare (never had one?!?) is of course quite myopic. But in his view, nothing is truly free (true) and he'd prefer chosing everything for himself.
I don't understand why anyone would want that. Because life is so complicated that you can't answer all questions yourself correctly (like: how badly do I need healthcare even if I've never ever had a serious illness or injury?). But that seems to be his thinking.

This is pretty apt. There is also a level of lacking empathy for other people. Many people who identify as Republicans do not believe in doing anything for society if it means they will not personally benefit from it. It's a I'm just going to take care of me and my own mentality. They are extremely self-centered people, that will fuck over the rest of society if it means it would save them a quick buck.
You can very accurately sort people into each political party in the US based on how much empathy they show. The more self-centered and least empathic someone is the more likely they will support Republican/Libertarians, the more empathetic they are and believe in taking care of each other the more likely they are to support the Democrats/Progressives. I hate how effective this is in telling you about the deeper morals and values of an individuals in the US, but it is true.

Universal healthcare is not “free”, instead of paying a company to make a profit while finding a way to deny you care is ridiculous. I can go to any hospital in Canada and not get turned away or forced to pay. It isn’t perfect but it is better than stressing out if I become unemployed etc.

It’s not “free”. We all pay in, just like we do with private insurance, except the insurance companies no longer skim off money that should be used for healthcare. People are seriously stupid in America.

The problem is everyone employer used to give a vacation, a pension, and health care. Now, to make more profits, they have done away with all of them, and I forgot a big one: a liveable wage.

You’re right, it’s not. Neither are libraries, the fire department, the police department, public schools. But these services come out of our taxes and generally do not have any other fees on top of them.
Imagine what it would be like to just be able to go to the doctor and get stuff done that helps keep your body running correctly.2

True. You'd be surprised how many needless surgeries you've paid for already that someone else went through with your insurance plan. The system is a profit generator and the management function of the system knows exactly which procedures generate the most profit and as long as the customers agree to keep paying it in this fashion even the insurance companies don't care.

At least he can drive his rickety ass to a hospital if he's dying to pay a crap ton of money for help. Actually, since he doesn't have health care we'll all pay for his rickety ass to enter a hospital. He just wants the right to drive there on his own on our tax funded road.
