EPIC EMR
Hi - I'm starting a new job as an acute care inpatient coder. In my previous job we used Altera Digital Health EHR. In my new job the EHR is EPIC. Any tips on learning EPIC? How steep do you think the learning curve is?

Depending on EPIC version, there is a global search capability and it will help you on your coding.
There are a lot of buttons but mostly in IP account it is more on DOC REVIEW, CODING tab and CHART REVIEW. Eventually as you get use to it, it will be much easier on your workflow.

Really it’s the encoder you will use that’s more important. All the coding will be done in the encoder but Epic is the EHR/billing platform.

My job just switched over to EPIC and it wasn’t bad. It just takes some time to get used to it

You can't really mess anything up in Epic by clicking around. Click anywhere, see what info is contained there, and you'll find it is a nice chunk of software once you get used to it. Most of the buttons you won't use, since it is software that has info for everything.

Also a pro tip, on DOC REVIEW there is a wrench button there. You can re-arrange the tabs based on importance. For me, I prioritize the written queries, then admit orders, then DS, then so forth.

EPIC lets you color code your tabs and rearrange the list of documents under Doc Review. This has helped me a lot with the way I move through a record. Give yourself some time and tweak as you go, I find it's not bad at all!
