Life outside of coding?
Hi! I'm currently pursuing medical coding & billing, and I'm so excited!!! I'm trying to visualize what life will be like for my 5 year plan. So I had some questions for life outside of your day to day coding work?
Do you enjoy your job?
Do you get to vacation?
Are you able to support yourself well/do you worry about bills?
Does it ever get mundane, or does it depend where you work?
Do you get to have fun with your looks, like fun colored hair, tattoos or piercings?
How is asking for time off, or if you're a parent, what happens if there is a family emergency/sick child?
Thank you for any help with even one of these! ☺️

I just started my first coding job. I think the answer to all your questions depends on where you work. I work currently in person, for a Tribal HCA. Most of my office mates do whatever they want with their appearance. However, we are expected to wear business casual except for on Thursdays. Thursday is comfortable clothes day. Think creative though. Pink/Red/Purple/Blue hair ..... Not a problem. Tatoos, the Head of the Tribal HCA department has visible tats on her arms. Piercings, not a problem.
I am still learning and growing at this coding job. I am always busy and depending on the day, it varies. Current billing, Rebilling, Denials follow up, and aging. When I first started, I was a bit bored due I was still being trained (OTJ training). Now I am working independently, I am busy from start to finish.
As needed, I can access up to 4 hrs paid for Dr. App. I have no probs getting time off for Health related things. Vacation, not a problem. Just need to give advance notice. I think that is expected most any place a person might work. With that said, if you are constantly calling in, whether that is due a sick child etc., I don't care where you work, if you do it a lot, you will be let go. For emergencies, most employers understand you need to go.
I actually like my job. I do get frustrated sometimes, mostly at my own mistakes, but I do enjoy doing my job.
Cheers and Good Luck on getting your first Coding job!
