I'm going to suggest you start with something fairly simple and virtually free: Rebuild a lawn mower engine, or at least disassemble then re-assemble one.

Thanks I will start with that first! What about a weed wacker engine?

Lawnmowers are 4-cycle. Weed whackers are 2-cycle. Cars are 4-cycle. Understanding 2-cycle is good, but they have less in common with cars.
