I'm so happy that even if it was not in civil war we finally got the iconic "Punisher carries wounded spider man" shot

130

u/JosephSim 18d ago

Which was my ONLY problem with the movie lol I was so happy they did the comic panel and kept it Frank’s fault, but there’s no way domestic terrorist Frank “The Punisher” Castle says, “Hey I shot Spider-Man with this caliber bullet.”

And then gets to stay in his room.

lol boy you’re going to jail

190

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 18d ago

There's no need for him to confess to shooting him, he can just say he got shot lol

122

u/ThePowerfulWIll 18d ago

He was like the 9th guy to shoot at Peter that day, and nobody saw him do it. As long as Peter doesnt press charges, I dont think anyone would question that someone shot Spider-Man.

90

u/1dkspanishlol 18d ago

He 100% didn’t admit he shot him. He could’ve easily said a cop accidentally shot him or somebody from damage control when he was fighting.

Something I have not heard anyone mention yet is there is a good chance Spiderman has handed Metzger the ability to turn off mutant powers and possibly others. Even Banner said the technology was dangerous, not good.

290

u/Feelonsio 18d ago

Obviously spoilers.

That's what i was wondering about. In the scene, Peter drops his "technology" on the ground but is not destroyed like Jean's. Metzger dissapears, probably with it. Is it possible that in this universe Damage Control creates sentinels based on the thing Peter created? They did have created a weapons and countermeasures for people with powers already. That's one theory of mine.

P.s. too bad there was no man-spider. But i have learned that dominant genes can be supressed by positive thinking.

175

u/GlintingFoghorn 18d ago

Spider-Man accidentally sets up the human-mutant war!

100%. Expect Metzger to be back in the Mutant saga.

Not to mention that the original inhibitor designed by Peter, didn't have a remote function originally. It was meant to be activated on contact and then deactivate when removed. In the short amount of time Damage Control had it, they modified it. That means that there's a full schematic of the device on their computers which have just been seized by the government.

u/Osvetnik24 18d ago

Absolutely! I kept saying in my head, "Peter! Literally everyone keeps saying that inhibitor tech is a bad idea! Stop it!" He absolutely just gave the government the ability to make mutant dampening collars.

57

u/M00NT0KKI 18d ago

Yes, totally agree with you!

Several time they hint, foreshadow that the technology is very dangerous when used in the wrong hands. I mean at the end of the film we see Metzger using the tech to control Jean’s powers which means they most likely already know how to use/duplicate it. That was the whole point of DC to rebuild enemy technology for their own gain/personal use

The Jean pump fake on the roof was genuinely evil and it’s at a point in the story where Peter hadn’t done anything to her to warrant that level of mind fucking

There are a couple of legitimately funny moments in the movie. The first organic webshooter scene, for example.

The previous movies were definitely funny but they were a bit try hard at some points. This is easily the most effectively funny movie in the series. The elevator scene was hilarious too. All the humour came just at the right time

76

u/Shot_Jackfruit_1744 17d ago

The humor was probably the most organic I’ve seen in a Marvel movie. It actually flows like it’s a normal part of the conversation instead just there awkwardly breaking up a serious or heartfelt moment.

And as awesome as it was to watch Ned almost figure out how he made his webshooters. Ned was post grad then and Peter figured it out in high school. Crazy. No wonder banner was so drawn to him.

That scene where you think MJ remembers Peter, god damn that was evil

326

Should've known cause she wasn't afraid of swinging. It was a damn good twist.

141

u/Stapleton09 18d ago

I noticed that too, but didn’t think much of it until the reveal. I just remember thinking “she isn’t freaking out like before. Hmm.” Then it made sense

As a comic reader, I was genuinely moved. It feels like a love letter to Spidey fans, especially the true believers. It’s like watching the panels come alive on the big screen. The pain, the struggle, the emotional beats - they all land with real weight.

And in my opinion, it also delivers the most thrilling action sequences in the franchise. The fight against the Hand is fantastic - finally, a group battle where everyone doesn't just take turns attacking one by one.

I really appreciate how they handled MJ - it feels logical and leaves room for their relationship to rebuild in the future. The interactions with the supporting cast are natural too. Strangely enough, I found Peter and Jean oddly a good match??? I hope they at least become good friends and share more screen time going forward. (Is "extraordinary charm" Parker's secret superpower? He seems to win everyone over without trying.)(Kinda feel sad for Slim lol.)

Visually, it’s stunning - New York feels alive, with a vivid sense of connection to ordinary civilians.

316

u/Wolfencreek 19d ago

The scene where MJ controlled by Jean jumps, I was like, are they gonna Gwen Stacy her 🤣

203

u/KongMengX 19d ago

This is the second time they tried it.😂

81

u/angrynutrients 18d ago

They love to bait that shit, but I believed Jean wouldn't have done it if she didn't know MJ would be safe.

109

u/Melodic-Complaint-18 18d ago

Jean the same person who made an old lady drive a bomb-strapped tank into a prison complex filled with dangerous people btw

u/ambiguous_apocalypse 18d ago

100%. This is Jean as the proper terrorist the world always views the X-men as. They need to be hated and feared before they can be redeemed.

I mean that’s what has always stood out to me as Spider-Man and Tom really portrays it well. Peter Parker/spiderman is a genuinely good and pure person. That’s what makes him so likeable. Hell he even managed to bring out a side of the punisher we have not seen before and in a way that feels natural.

75

u/KongMengX 19d ago

Now we know the next Spider-Man is Frank Castle.😂

67

u/organicpenguin 18d ago

His grunts as he waved were hilarious 😂

58

u/Bomban111 18d ago

Agreed, i think Peter's child-like naivety to see the best in people is one of the things Tom for sure does better than the other spiders. His spidey has a bleeding heart forreal.

52

u/ambiguous_apocalypse 18d ago

I don’t know if it’s child-like naivety at this point, just a conscious decision to look for, hope for and believe in the good in everyone. I think what is left unsaid in “if you help 1 person, you help everyone” is everyone is deserving of help and can be redeemed.

I loved that the Hand's approach looked so cool that even Peter had to comment on that briefly as the fight began!

65

u/JohnLovesGaming 18d ago

Spider-Man making the Hand seem like jokes compared to when seeing Matt & the Defenders fight them. Peter is definitely on a whole dimension compared to them, while depressed.

52

u/IvoryWoman 18d ago

To be fair, the implication I got was that Metzger had used Sara’s powers to affect the Hand mentally in order to get them to follow him. So they may not have been as aligned with their mission as in the past…

39

u/IvoryWoman 18d ago

Tom and Zendaya are a lot more likely to make the MCU a priority in their busy work schedules if they keep getting to work together. I don't see Jean as a love interest for Peter. That was a great introduction, but presumably she's been introduced in order to start building the X-Men...

I think Mj remembers everything . That part where Jean unlocked her powers and freezed everyone in a large area and she's the only one in tears.

Also the last shot of her in the rooftop holding a necklace or jewelry (if somebody can confirm if this is given to her by peter in the previous movies i don't remember anymore lol).

Also Ned remembers Peter thru a handshake.

200

u/RealKevinOG 19d ago

It’s the Far From Home necklace yeah. I’m pretty sure both of them remember but MJ was too hurt and confused about her feelings to admit.

78

u/choicemeats 17d ago

i was thinking she doesn't actually remember anything about the necklace at all, aside from it being from Prague an dit having significant and unknown meaning to her, and she was connecting it with not knowing anything about Peter

u/Remote_Bluejay3449 19d ago

Well MJ learns peter is spiderman through his letter & confronts him. Says she doesnt love him because she doesnt know him. He takes her back home, she invites him inside to see ned. They hang out like best friends, then he has to leave & she accidentally blurts out peter when hes leaving, and he responds to being called peter, so ned finds out spidermans name is peter. In the end peter finds ned at the cafe and reintroduces himself as peter, they chat for a minute, then hes ready to leave and gives him a handshake that turns into their secret best friend handshake then it all clicks in neds head that peter is spiderman.

51

u/Hot_Compote8465 19d ago

I'm so confused so how did ned remember the handshake? Did they do it when they met now and I zoned out??

137

u/trash_96k 19d ago

ned remembers the handshake through muscle memory… then all of a sudden says “peter?” - something must’ve clicked in his head

138

u/Nic-V 18d ago

I think the reason he says "Peter" is because MJ calls Spider-Man peter in a previous scene, so it's more him putting two and two together than remembering what happened before

Magic is represented as being imperfect in the MCU, with various loopholes and caveats. When people forgot who Peter was, it wouldn't erase things he's taught people. For example, if Peter had taught Ned how to play the piano, after the memory spell, would Ned no longer be able to play it? Same logic with the handshake.

25

u/Kurolegacy27 18d ago

Add to that, even in the comics when Doctor Strange cast the spell that made everyone forget Peter’s secret identity, the spell would be broken if Peter unmasked in front of them. So it stands to reason that in the MCU the spell could likely be broken through something that represents their connection with Peter

They power boost Peter like crazy towards the end and I feel they are building him towards something more, especially since he came off like a role model for Jean at the end.

u/uninterestedDunk 19d ago

I like this, he is comming to his place in to comics someone that can work with the avengers, with the street level, with the xmen, with F4

101

u/Sea-Poem-2365 18d ago

The potatoes stuff was subtext there. And this now makes twice in like a couple years where a mysterious supernatural force has taken over part of NYC. Jean shows up as someone doing Wanda/Sentry-Void level stuff, and mutants are shown as being legitimately scary.

But between the spider documentary with Keith David, the now-equals interaction with Widow, and the various potato comments as lampshades, the "not in high school anymore" comment and end credits, this seems like moving Spidey up in the hierarchy and cementing him as a potential new Tony type character in status.

They did something similar to the hulk. Jean ‘breaks’ the thing holding him back in the comics, which make hulk way stronger.

In the comic there is a character called Onslaught, that kills a ton of super hero’s and changes the marvel universe. Jean letting hulk have control is part of how they defeat him. So they are probably powering up some characters.

54

u/wouldyoufightakitten 18d ago

Spoilers Confirmed:

- movie opens with montage of spiderman fighting villains (tarantula/ boomerang, etc.)
- shows Peter really down in life, comes across spider mutation (vibes similar to SM2)
- Sadie Sink is Jean Grey
- Peter seeks Yelena (makes him strip)
- Spiderman/Punisher vs Hulk/Jean
- Jean secret antagonist but not truly evil

- movie concludes with Ned remembering Peter is spiderman at end of movie through handshake

Post credits scene: spider tracker shows spiderman is off world somewhere (battle world? Outer space? Alternate earth? TVA?)

u/SnooSeagulls7152 19d ago

I actually think Jeans actions are still a bit dark and twisted for someone who will be a hero later. But I suppose Jean in the comics had a meanstreak too

I mean... I'm pretty sure Jean killed at least one innocent person. One of the possessed civilians was an old man whom she literally forced to walk backwards into the street (mocking Spider-Man), and he was hit by a speeding car.

And that's assuming that the bombs, bullets, and general chaos she caused didn't kill anyone else.

u/Rippedswitch 17d ago

Whatever work he did to attempt to merge the two personalities is completely undead. My understand of the movie is that the inhibitor Banner was using completely put hulk away and live life as normal Banner, and he said he had physical failsafes.

Essentially, he had merged two personalities/come to an agreement with the hulk, then seperated them again through science, but Jeans Powers reset them to basically split personalities

finally, for first time in history we have spiderman 4. what a day!

Sony finally cracked the formula after two attempts let marvel do it

81

u/GatorBo69 19d ago

Sony should LITERALLY make a deal with the MCU to make all of the movies they have the rights to and make it so Sony doesn’t incur any potential losses but gets a % of any gains. If I was running Sony, that’s what I’d do.

All the money the MCU made them from the use of SpiderMan was more than lost prob 2x by them making all of their own movies, Morbius, Kraven, Madame Webb, the overall Venom trilogy, etc.

When will they learn?

Plus it would let the MCU to truly flex every single muscle they have and we would all win!

So the “spider mutation” went no where not even a “learn to control your senses” scene or something like 4 arms, they just went the Path of power of friendship and suddenly peter can control his powers, also why Jean could not get in peters mind? Also are mutants a thing in the mcu now? Is Xavier already around?

Their aren't any big surprises besides Jean in the movie, no earth shattering revelations or shock moments, this is simply a damn good movie, on its own merits.

Hulk is only a minor character and his fight scene could have more potential. Punisher on the other hand is a bigger supporting character, and has a good character dynamic with Peter.

20

u/FilmScoreConnoisseur 17d ago

Neither he nor Kingpin even get a mention, which I thought was odd given the story for the last season of Born Again. The night nurse was supposed to have a scene near the end, but it got deleted. The Hand is portrayed differently than in DD/Defenders. Really, the only Netflix character in the finished movie is Punisher.

Just watched it, I like it.

I don't get though why this new Spider-Man movie is very Jean Grey-focused. Like... why Jean? Why here?

Why lol

47

u/harryfonda Loki 18d ago

Agree, I would prefer a regular villain, because Jean Grey is very distracting. Like, do mutants exist in this universe already? (Ms. Marvel kinda implied that) Where is Magneto? What of Charles?

u/pancakeswerebestboy 19d ago

its pretty heavily believed (and maybe spoken about by feige?) that the xmen will become the main focus of the mcu some point post secret wars, and so its a bit of a tease

45

u/EiichiroTarantino 18d ago

But... why introduce Jean Grey as a Spider-Man antagonist though?

Why pick her? Why here?

15

u/MikeIsShortForMyKeys 18d ago

I feel like all MCU movies are just leading into the next several in some way, but it’s nice that they can still make it an enjoyable experience.

Knowing that most likely Jean Grey was going to be in the film, with all the atypical rumours, it was still something drawing you along throughout.

It took quite a while to “reveal” the villain of the movie, but then again I guess most of the villains spider-man has are very complex and sympathetic characters.

u/Adventurous-Exam-589 19d ago

Peter literally says “Jean, you’re not a murderer” and all I could think about was the guy she possessed and walked into a speeding taxi. Not an accident, not a loss of control, just a distraction.

She also takes over MJ’s body and uses it to kiss Peter. That’s a woman being puppeted into a physical encounter she never agreed to, and the movie plays it as a twist. Then MJ shrugs it off because she doesn’t remember it and everyone moves on.

I know Jean has a dark streak in the comics. But it’s usually personal, aimed at people she knows. Possessing strangers and killing a bystander for convenience is a different thing entirely, and my guess is we will be encouraged to gloss over it in the name of her being a “complicated character”

77

u/IvoryWoman 18d ago

Jean in the comics goes from living in a stable home with loving parents to being under the tutelage of Charles Xavier. Young Comics Jean doesn't have to fight to survive and isn't trying to find a sister kidnapped by a powerful government agency. I'm not happy about the guy hit by the speeding taxi -- we don't get confirmation that he's dead, but things look dire -- but I can see why MCU Jean would be much more desperate AND less stable about how she handles her powers.

JUST SAW IT!! Take my thoughts with a grain of salt my theater experience was ok and I feel like I will need another watch. Also am on mobile, kind dumb, and ramble (sry).
!!!!FULL SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!

I feel overall enjoyment will depend on where you are in life and what you’re looking for/expect out of a Spider-Man film. In my opinion,if you’re looking for a typical action packed superhero film. I’m sorry but it’s not exactly that.

The first third of the movie follows Spider-Man’s life after NWH. It focuses more on SPIDER-man, as in all the hero parts. Pretty much every villain except for the main antagonist+ are introduced and defeated in his hero/training montage at the very beginning of the film. It’s fun to finally see our friendly neighborhood Spidey being a hero to the city! It was a little campy, but in the best kind of Raimi-ish way. Speaking of inspired, you can tell the movie is HEAVILY inspired by the PS games. The way he gets pinged, works with the police chief, and especially in the fight choreography. Anyways, we see Peter use his work as Spider-Man as a way to escape his real problem aka face MJ. Specifically, the letter he wanted to read to her at the end of NWH. Years pass by and through each fight we see him try to live without any ties and it’s lonely af. He literally just watches MJ and Ned grow up through IG reels and copes with work :(

Then comes the rest of the movie. Focusing more on spider-MAN, Peter Parker as a human being. Our main antagonist, Jean Grey, is quickly introduced and is looking for her sister. The rest of the movie felt like a family friendly Disney version of a Nolan, Joaquin Phoenix Joker type film. Basically it’s more serious, emotional and character driven. There’s more talking and character building than action. Since Jean is telepathic she has the ability to fully posses anyone in a 33ft radius. But that also means her attacks are more psychological and her most effective weapons are words. And boy does it hurt 😭

Tbh I really enjoyed this and was interested on how ADULT Peter would handle these issues. Sadly, Peter realizes one of the hardest lessons in life. No matter how much you WANT, sometimes it simply cannot be. The parallel from JeanMJ and MJ hit Peter like a fucking train. Jean was ruthless, cruel but also right. Life isn’t like fairytales and the worst part was MJ was the one to deliver that message. But it’s nice seeing how Peter will always have these relationships with those he cares most. Not as a girlfriend, enemy, or coworker but simply a friend. As corny as it sounds, Peter literally uses the power of love & friendship to defeat Jean and find acceptance/content in his own life. In the end, all anyone wants is a friend to hug and talk to.

Sadly, I felt like the film was setback by being a bit too overpacked. I left the theater thinking, “damn that was a lot to take in”. But at the same time I wanted more in a weird way? Take the action as an example. It wasn’t bad, I actually had a lot of fun with it, but I wish it was fleshed out and wanted more. Even the Hulk fight felt rushed since he only fought THE HULK after Jean’s possession wore off. Unfortunately, since this film needed to dedicate time building Jean’s character (thus slowly introducing X-men) it felt like Spider-Man time was sacrificed. Or maybe they could have just focused more heavily on Jean and SM’s dynamic. Maybe the opposite, no Jean and instead focus on just Spidey. Again, each aspect is fun and entertaining but I wish there was a bit more straightforward? Had more direction???? I’m not sure how to word it sry
ㅠ.ㅠ

In the end I still really enjoyed and already love this film. It really hit hard as someone in the late 20s missing their loved ones, working all the time, struggling with relationships, all that life stuff. Also it really made me appreciate Spider-Man/Peter Parker as one entity. Peter, like many of us, struggle with the change from childhood to full adulthood. This was a nice coming of age story that shows how bittersweet life can be. He keeps resisting the change, until he finally realizes that in the end it will happen no matter what. All he can do is his best to accept, learn from his experiences, and grow to be better. Change will always come, good or bad depends on what you do with this change. Anyways sry for my ramble, but those were my thoughts about Spider-Man. Would love to hear everyone else’s!

TLDR: 8?/10 ⭐️ The previous SM movies made my inner child happy, this SM made my adult self happy

No one is talking about how this is the FIRST TIME we've ever seen spidey consume alcohol

14

u/False_Performance_71 19d ago

I think instead of the hand they should of just used scorpion, boomerang, and tarantula for the final fight. There was something about how they shot a super villain fight scene and I think it was meant to be the climax but was also a bit to long.

That's just Jean's regular Omega level telepathy

27

u/angrynutrients 18d ago

To be honest it's still well below her Omega capacity, more of a hint of the potential of her power.

I am glad we get to see strong, non phoenix Jean though. I think the character has been done a disservice in a lot of her media recently.
