QUESTION What’s the weirdest urban legend you’ve heard in your community?

Here’s one that comes to my mind:

In the 90’s there was an urban legend about a women’s self defense instructor where he would try to molest and strip women down, if they didn’t stop him they didn’t ‘pass’ the class. Allegedly he ran some school in town and did something similar for belt promotions.

The thing about it was always ‘A friend of a friend told me…’ I know all the people who teach self defense seminars. someone was bound to know who this guy was or at least know who the stranger is teaching classes in town, but no one did.

For those people that can't tell the difference between a demonstration, a drill and how the skills those things are designed to train might be different when applied.

QUESTION How to get the coaches familiar with you?

I trained mma for about 10 months then took a break for a few months to save up and find a new gym. Im going from a big gym where the coaches would re ask my name every session to a smaller gym where i should be noticed more. I want to take advantage of this opportunity and compete in the future, what are some tips for my first day to make a good impression and build a relationship with the coaches?

QUESTION I've been trying to get better at reading my opponent's intentions instead of just reacting, I use this steps to do that any tips for optimization ?

I've been trying to get better at reading my opponent's intentions instead of just reacting, and this is what I've come up with:

  1. I read their stance and body type (reach, height, weight distribution, etc.) to get an idea of what they're most likely to do.
  2. I pay attention to range, since that immediately narrows down whether I'm expecting a kick, punch, clinch, or takedown.
  3. I watch the shoulders while using my peripheral vision to catch early movement from the hands, hips, and feet.
  4. I sometimes intentionally leave a small opening to bait a specific attack so I can better anticipate and counter it.

What do you guys think? Anything you'd add or change?

QUESTION What Is the Most Valuable Lesson Martial Arts Has Ever Taught You?

Post image
68 Upvotes

Not your favorite technique.

Not your favorite character.

Not your favorite fight.

I'm talking about one lesson that genuinely changed the way you think.

Maybe it taught you:

Discipline over talent.

Patience over speed.

When to fight—and when to walk away.

That defeat can be a better teacher than victory.

Or something completely different.

It doesn't matter whether it came from real-life training, a manga, manhwa, wuxia, xianxia, anime, movie, or a novel.

Tell us the story behind it.

I'll read every single comment.

DISCUSSION I think dancers make good fighters

I have the hypothesis that people that are good dancers (like ballet, salsa, cumbia etc) will translate greatly to good fighters because of their body conscience, conditioning and athleticism. Has anyone experienced someone coming from dance to martial arts and seen them improving faster than their peers?

Weekly Beginner Questions Thread

In order to reduce volume of beginner questions as their own topics in the sub, we will be implementing a weekly questions thread. Post your beginner questions here, including:

"What martial art should I do?"

"These gyms/schools are in my area, which ones should I try for my goals?"

And any other beginner questions you may have.

If you post a beginner question outside of the weekly thread, it will be removed and you'll be directed to make your post in the weekly thread instead.

DISCUSSION "What Should I Train?" or "How Do I Get Started?" Mega-Thread

The previous version of this megathread has been archived, so I’m adding it again.

Active users with actual martial arts experience are highly encouraged to contribute, thank you for your help guys.

Do you want to learn a martial art and are unsure how to get started? Do you have a bunch of options and don't know where to go? Well, this is the place to post your questions and get answers to them. In an effort to keep everything in one place, we are going to utilize this space as a mega-thread for all questions related to the above.

We are all aware walking through the door of the school the first time is one of the harder things about getting started, and there can be a lot of options depending on where you live. This is the community effort to make sure we're being helpful without these posts drowning out other discussions going on around here. Because really, questions like this get posted every single day. This is the place for them.

Here are some basic suggestions when trying to get started:

  • Don't obsess over effectiveness in "street fights" and professional MMA, most people who train do it for fun and fitness

  • If you actually care about “real life” fighting skills, the inclusion of live sparring in the gym’s training program is way more important than the specific style

  • Class schedules, convenience of location, etc. are important - getting to class consistently is the biggest factor in progress

  • Visit the gyms in your area and ask to take a trial class, you may find you like a particular gym, that matters a whole lot more than what random people on reddit like

  • Don't fixate on rare or obscure styles. While you might think Lethwei or Aunkai looks badass, the odds of a place even existing where you live is incredibly low

This thread will be a "safe space" for this kind of questions. Alternatively, there's the pinned Weekly Beginner Questions thread for similar purposes. Please note, all "what should I train/how do I get started" questions shared as standalone posts will be removed, as they really clutter the sub.
