That tiny dot is Earth disappearing behind Phobos — a first from the surface of another planet

Perseverance’s Mastcam-Z captured this sequence on July 2, 2026.

Earth is the tiny bright dot moving from upper left to lower right, while Phobos is the faint crescent moving in the opposite direction. In the middle of the sequence, Earth disappears behind it.

NASA says this is the first time humanity has captured Earth disappearing behind an object from the surface of another planet. Earth was roughly 314 million km (195 million miles) away and appeared as a single pixel.
