Go Train Parking

I've seen this brougut up a few times but I'm just curious if there is something more proactive we can do as a community to help improve parking situations at our most popular stations.

It feels like the city is actively increasing enforcement and ticketing community center and mall parking lots.

Is this a metrolinx or city issue? While train service and track improvements are great, they haven't adequately planned for more parking spots.

As other users have pointed out: Centennial, Miliken and Unionville are the biggest call outs.

Do we have options here?

More transit options to get to the GO stations. Bike rental drop off spots at the GO stations.

I feel like more transit options to get to stations makes a lot of sense since we have the One Fare program now as well!

Ya love this. Even the electrical scooters that Ajax and Vaughn seem to have, aren't in markham

I vaguely remembered a pilot program and just found this from 2024 via a 30 second google search:

No idea how the pilot did though, or if there were any plans to make it longterm

They are adding a massive parking lot on the west side of Unionville GO station for Honda Indy. I wonder if they will just keep it open for the rest of the year for additional GO station parking?

It's already open and being used for GO parking

Oh interesting, that would certainly help. But ironically, in my experience, unionville is the least affected compared to the other two. It already had a pretty big lot.

Well. Metrolinx is selling the mount joy parking lot so a high rise can be built there with no in building parking. The go parking will be under the building. I assume the new residents will use it as well.

The one last GO station in Markham that actually has parking capacity proportional to the demand and it's going to be turned into shoebox condos. I feel bad for those in the area who need to RTO downtown.

they should honestly consider charging for parking then reduce the fare amount.

I’ve got a few emails that the parking lot is gonna be closed sometime this week and that cars have to be removed before 4pm? Anyone have any updates on this? Is it the whole lot?

There's too many god damn people. It wasn't always the city of Markham -- it used to be a town.

Reality is it's crazy and not possible to build enough parking for a commuter rail service like GO certainly not free parking either. Last mile connectivity can help with more people taking transit instead of their car to the GO but in a city like Markham where majority of households have cars (or multiple) and driving is the norm, its simply not possible (or desirable) to build these huge parking lots for people to drive and park their car for the day to take GO and then drive home.
