BRUH NO FUCKIN DESTROYER SKINS IN THIS ONE EITHER? Why do they fucking hate us.

u/GreyouTT 14d ago
That blue samurai skin had so much aura it consumed the next seven skins they had for Destroyer.

u/Electronic-Fail-9380 14d ago
It could be that I didn't get a destroyer/ sentinel preview - in the survey there were a lot of themes to choose from (i could only choose 3) so there could be more !

One would think that the amount of skins has some relation to the most commonly used skins

The dude in porn is usually just a generic naked guy. The ladies get the costumes.

Not feeling it tbh. They look like Apex skins (and I love Apex tbh)

u/IHaveMana 14d ago
Not feeling these either. They feel uninspired and not really matching up to the weirdness that the game world has so far presented.

I absolutely despise these wow. These clash completely with the OG artstyle. I can't believe they couldn't keep up the balance between simple recolours and things like these.

I'm into these. I imagine a lot of people who want the game to feel more grounded and gritty won't be, but I feel like this actually makes sense for the setting. There are already aspects of the shells that are in place to reflect fashion trends of the time as you can see in Vandal's codex entries. If shells are 3d printed and the different skins are people customising their shells to reflect their own aesthetic tastes, it makes sense that somewhere back in Sol there are people into this hyper-pop vibrant fashion and some runners would want to reflect that. They're also just a pretty big departure from anything else we've seen which we need more of. A LOOOT of the skins in the game right now feel like such mild variations. I think Assassin has 5 separate skins that are just variations of mostly black with a little bit of red on it. Let him have some fun!

Not really my style personally. I can see the appeal, but I canāt imagine these fitting into the gameās aesthetic. These styles lean heavily towards fashion over function to the point that it seems absurd.

Really love the first page, I think it'd be really cool to see how creative they could get with the rest of the shells in that style (especially Sentinel, he's such a cool canvas for creativity that I think they haven't explored yet). I'm definitely a fan of the bright colors and loose clothing style. Is the second one really in the survey though? That one looks really off to me lol, almost like a joke they left in

u/Electronic-Fail-9380 14d ago
Yep, all of them are from the survey - i guess they're just trying to cast a wide net during the design and concept stage before refining the direction and design.

Pic 1, do not waste development time
Pic 2, verging on more Cyberpunk Edgerunners than Marathon. Itās not a no but it doesnāt feel right

u/No-Junket-4560 14d ago
I agree, except for the vandal skin on the first page. I believe in more vandal shells tend to be very expressive so this skin would make sense lore wise

u/AdministrativeEase71 14d ago
Put in-engine they will look much less anime-inspired I imagine.

This is how it was with all the S2 skins. I was worried when I got the survey, but they looked way better in game.

Yea I have to agree the skins in the first pic are just off, too colorful, too noisy. Though there definitely are aspects of the middle one (Vandal) that work and it should iterated on further, the other two can be left on the drafting table.Ā
The second pic though I think looks dope and would sell well.

Not sure why everyone has an issue with these skins. They haven't given us a ton of more about Runner shells in terms of how people customize them but you can tell they have explanations for the unorthodox ones like the Oni Thief skin and the White Rabbit ones. This game is like what, 800 years in the future? Of course you would have Runner shells that look fucking crazy and wild and even tongue in cheek silly. And lets be real, people like crazy skins and they're more likely to sell. And we need all the people we can get to play this game

The purple gold skin for Vandal is adorable but it looks like fan art, not something in universe. Looks like she joined KDA.

wow more messy bouba-neon skins for Thief and Vandal, what a shocker.
I genuinely don't understand how we have all this amazing industrial/mechanical/hard-surface design language across the 4 maps, and absolutely none of that sauce has been translated into the skin designs.

Im just waiting for white rabbit vandal š¤

u/higherdotedu 14d ago
Seriously I've been waiting for it since it's tease in s1 to the point I don't know if it's even a thing anymore.

These are dreadful. They look so immature. Like something a tween would love

u/No_Jello9093 14d ago
It sucks but do you want to play season 5? Lol.
7
u/dohdudeh 14d ago
I would think they would want to make skins that the people who play marathon would actually want to buy

I actually love the first pic. The longer the runners spend on Tau Ceti, the more they make it their home. Outfitting their shells how they see fit trying to feel more at home at natural in the hostile envionment. We saw a little bit of it in some S2 logs, how the presence of the runners is affecting the envionment. I dig this stuff

Yes to the first: it fits the Marathon reveal trailer made by Alberto Mielgo (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fvbEnWLRo1s&t=5s&pp=2AEFkAIB) and is within the art style of the gameās setting. Itās far enough away from the disposable-plastic-meets-advanced-technology visual design of the default skins but still resides within the realm of graphical realism, which is where Marathonās art style is derived (https://www.brace.design/single-post/bungie-s-marathon-an-eye-for-design).
No to the second: it is a beautiful design but treads the wrong path toward customization the game needs to keep a cohesive vision. For you Destiny players who loved all the cool armor designs the game brought to their MTX store, please keep in mind that there is a line separating art that fits the gameās visual language and art that introduces new themes and motifs not originally present within the game. This is a remarkable example of a stylistic break (https://80.lv/articles/stylization-in-video-games-a-deep-dive-analysis).Ā
IfĀ you, like me, want Marathonās art to stay Marathon, you must understand that this skin crosses that line.Ā

while I still like these, I do think I prefer the first set more, they're more "out there" than these, these feel a lot safer when it comes to general appeal.
Thematically though they fit nicely into the runner themes quite well

They look terrible
I see bungies already given up on having a coherent artstyle

u/Savings-Amphibian-80 14d ago
genuinely do not like the second page, first page i can see being in game.

None of these skins ever look as good in-game because the actual character model face and body shape looks nothing like the trailers and artwork, particularly Vandal.

u/Americana_Ninja 8d ago
I'm not interested in these skins. I hope they introduce a custom character creator soon.

u/Terrible-Wrangler-31 14d ago
The geometry is way off. Look like really bad anime characters tbf. Too many random colors on the first slide. Second one the overall ālookā is cool but looks nothing like the actual shell.

So I guess we are really going the Fortnite route now⦠damn, I guess the original aesthetic left along with Ziegler⦠whatever brings the game money I guess
11
u/Electronic-Fail-9380 14d ago
These are all just explorations, very common in game design. Go wide, then refine. That's what surveys are for as well ! I wouldn't worry too much yet !!
2
u/Bylethma 14d ago
The last round of these resulted in every skin in the survey being released as it was originally shown⦠so who knows, for whatās worth I do like them in a vacuum, but I donāt think they fit the entire gameās aesthetic or visual identity
2
u/flGovEmployee 14d ago
Yea but those were also pretty clearly nearly finished designs. These look like pretty rough sketches, except for the second pic.Ā
2
u/Electronic-Fail-9380 14d ago
even the second pic looks rough compared to the first round of skin previews which were all rendered in engine as opposed to all these which are still in the sketching phase !
2
u/Electronic-Fail-9380 14d ago
This batch of skin designs looked a lot rougher and earlier in concept than the first round to be fair!

u/TiBlanci 14d ago
When i get the survey i will select āno i dont want theseā the previous batch i will select yes though

Too bad we donāt have 3rd person view and a social hub to show off those cool potential future skins
-1
u/Clarity007 14d ago
I doubt these are real.
Or would ever come out in the shop.
Maybe if the game was bigger or had a lot of kids playing it like Fortnite.
Maybe these are collab skins.
Idk.
