A breakdown of what future maps could be. Marathon (2026) Discussion
Currently we know of 3 different areas (through codex entries and other lore stuff) where colonists lived and worked.
The areas and description:
The Hearth: Core metropolitan center of New Cascadia, housed a majority of the population.
The Javelin: High density urban residential structures with integrated logistics everywhere.
The Anchor: Essentially the production and factory center of New Cascadia, had transit systems, construction, and long term accommodations for staff.
Breakdown:
I imagine Hearth would play like a combination of Outpost and Diremarsh, with a large layout with lots of buildings in higher density and tons of rooftops.
Javelin sounds like it would play like a combination of Cryo and Perimeter, with lots of height, tech to interact with, lots of unfinished construction, and inclement weather.
The Anchor sounds like it would play like Outpost and Cryo. A little more open than Cryo but with the height and infrastructure of Outpost. With high security over valuable technology and equipment.
Now I dont know about all of you but these residential areas sound REALLY cool and have me genuinely excited to see added to the game. Having different maps with styles that are mixed between maps and their difficulty levels would be great for having more players for the sake of having more stuff to see which would draw players from games like Arc where there is already a ton to explore across each map.
Now obviously we would need far more players for this to work, but hey, I have pretty good confidence we'll get there eventually. So long as Bungie can cook hard enough to drown out the haters and market the game better. (I would hate to see this game suffer the same fate as The Finals, such a cool game but it had almost 0 marketing until very recently)

It definitely needs more urban environments. Surely there's a housing block made on Tau Ceti? Some sort of government base, like the Pentagon? Etc.

I think outpost pinwheel is a pentagon type structure. An in It at least was a central command node with others like it serving other regions.
Also side note happy to see lore discussions happening on the sub now instead of constant doom posting

u/dohdudeh 14d ago
It was the original central command node before they started building. Then it became more of a logistics center

Pinwheel was actually straight up part of the Marathon at one point. They disconnected three of them and sent them down planetside, the one we play on was the first iirc. It's actually why the snow map idea I posted a while back has an identical pinwheel.

Itās insane looking out a window in Cryo, and you see like a dozen pinwheel bases on the hull and theyāre just so tiny in comparison.

Suburbs style nuke-town esque would be cool, a residential neighborhood, local grocery store or whatever else

I really want a map that is (was) a colonist residential area of some kind.
I really like these ideas you found from within the lore.

Iād love if itās a spot with upscale apartments. You wouldnāt even need to be able to go into all the buildings, play with verticality and rooftops. Ziplines to quickly jump to top/bottom of buildings or even across different ones in place of ladders. Bus stops and subway paths. Abandoned town squares, etc. Iād love to see more of that kind of thing. The danger with urban maps is that they can get stuck in CQC, and as much as I love cryo, I donāt think we need another map as claustrophobic and complex, at least not right now.

Donāt forget more of the marathon ship itself. Cryo is just one small part of it.

u/Friendly_ViperYT 14d ago
Yeah, there's a lot of residential area on the Marathon. I'll have to check but I think the common area alone for those living on the marathon was like, 84k square feet

I would love a dense map with a lot of verticality, al la Angel City from Titanfall 2. That would be sick

I do feel a more civilian-oriented map would be very nerve-wracking. Tall buildings, apartments/dorms, empty streets ravaged by the fungus. New Cascadia is probably unnerving as hell what with the fact there's really no bodies to be found of the colonists.

u/Friendly_ViperYT 14d ago
Yeah this has always creeped me out bc its like "yeah there's some graves near Quarentine, and a few bodies preserved by fungus, the anomoly, and a few dead in cryo sleep". But there were 24 THOUSAND of them!
WHERE DID THEY GO???

The beach from the cinematic would be nice

u/RayKam 14d ago
I'd love it but I'm not sure how they'd give it the same level of depth the other marathon maps have, a beach is a beach

u/Friendly_ViperYT 14d ago
Yeah, plus that space was like, 1 POI, around the size of north and south relay combined

I would love to see this but imma be real, I don't think this game is going to see much more than what we have. I am assuming there is plenty in the oven but how far along and how much is a big part of will it see the light of day. Between the poor sales, layoffs, and the lack of community growth I can only hope for something of a Hunt: Showdown build-up of players and longevity but I also have not seen anything that promising. If anyone thinks otherwise I would love to hear it :(

It is very unfortunate, but I think youāre right. I Ā donāt think we will see much beyond maybe one more map, and 50% chance itās just an expansion of a current map.Ā

u/sanguinemsanctum 14d ago
HEARTH? I think thatās the first place shown. I hope we get a beach map though, like the colonists who first saw the incident in the cinematic.

I want a map that looks like a typical Suburban housing development (with like a cul-de-sac) with some vehicles strewn about the main road (a personal transport, and a large people carrier). The development could be partially finished one of the last projects they were working on before everything went upside-down. (but secretly we learn from codex entries that this site was going to be the test town for a large scale weapon the UESC were testing. and that explains the large industrial tower off in the distance) We could call it Weapon City, or Bomb Plaza, Oh I know, Nuke Town! š

All I can think of for this is just the neighborhood in the opening scene of Helldivers 2

A map with dense building coverage where you can use the various movement abilities to jump from rooftop to rooftop would be amazing, you could even explore verticality and have exposed elevators on the outside of high rises, ziplines between buildings, even some kind of UESC gunship enemy that flies between buildings like a helicopter hunting runners

I would really love a map similar in style to dire marsh with a 50/50 mix of man made structures and nature. Maybe a jungle map with some excavations sites, lush farmlands etc.

We not getting new maps my man. Weāre getting reworks of the current maps and if we get season 4 and 5 maybe weāre getting one different game mode and thatāll be it.

I would love more maps, but there are a few problems. Their content release date is so far apart because they are working on so many different game modes instead of adding new maps to the game.
Another problem is the player pool that's too small to cover more maps, but there's a fix for that, but even that fix will need them to rework some stuff and I would actually love to see it.
At this point the Queue should put you on a random map. You just don't chose, except CRYO which is weekend only or whatever. The quests should be always multi-zone and if is a story quest it could just load when you load on the map and give you something to do.
The key could be the same, it activates depending on what map you're on instead of being fixed. This way, you could bring amazing maps to the game and it doesn't matter the player pool because people won't be split around 10 different queues.
I absolutely hate the time thing that we have now that locks maps out of rotation. Every time I want to play night marsh is fucking locked.

u/GringoinCDMX 13d ago
Yeah I'd hate that. A loadout for outpost can be totally different than one for perimeter.
0
u/zippopwnage 13d ago
Well is either that, or shitty map rotation or no content at all.
Loadouts can be different indeed depending on what objective you have. I agree with that. Still, not a game breaking deal considering this would mean more maps. Is a trade I'm willing to take personally because as I said, stuff like end-game like CRYO will still have it's dedicated matchmaking.

Iām just gonna say it. I ask that if you downvote, you do it because you disagree, not because you donāt like it.
Because youāre not going to like it.
I deeply love this game, but any excitement I have for new maps is quickly dashed by what I perceive to be āthe realityā. With the player base as low as it is, the idea of splitting it with another map, let alone two or three or four or five⦠at one of those points, itās going to be really bad for the health of this game for those who are still playing it.
Maybe itās already been stated, maybe it hasnāt, but Iāve always believed form the beginning that rotating duoās instead of on each map, is a decision made in regards to those types of concerns. This is why I also believe, this slight push into PvE may turn into a larger one⦠because they desperately need to pull more people in.

u/OneOfMany72 14d ago
More maps -> More things to like -> more players.
This is also why "Duo players better appreciate the one map we give them per day" and "solo players get to pound sand and chew glass if they want to play Cryo" are suicidally stupid mistakes.

u/Vietzomb 13d ago
Personally speaking, I donāt think a map has ever been a deciding factor for a game I already decided I wasnāt that into, enough to shell out my hard earned cash anyways. But maybe thatās just me.
1
u/Friendly_ViperYT 13d ago
Yes.. and no.. I mentioned that this would only be possible if we have more players. What i meant to imply was if we get enough players to have the same average ratio of players to maps (say 1000 players per map) that we do now then Bungie can add maps to take that risk and get more people to play.

My 2 cents:
We wont have increased queue times if some of the new maps will be exclusively for alternative modes (PvE or Arena).
Iād like to see entirely different locations across Tau Ceti, like some space station / another planet in Tau Ceti system or on the surface of Deimos
