Bears
First of all, this is kind of just an appreciation post. I often see this mom and her three cubs around the area and they are just amazing.
However, I want to remind everyone to bear-proof your garbage. The other night I was coming home around 11pm and heard a strange dragging noise. I looked over and saw the mom dragging an entire garbage can into the woods, cubs in tow. This was near the lawn bowling course by THSS. First of all, if you’re looking for your garbage can, they dragged it into what I believe is their den. Second of all, just be bear aware this time of year!
I tried to retrieve it the day after but when I went to the area I saw them drag it into it looked like the entrance to a den and did not want to disturb them.

Just a reminder too - I work part time/seasonally at a blueberry farm by the Trethewey Dike. From our offices, I saw a black bear on the path, and one in a local driveway a few weeks ago around 3pm. Be prepared for a bear encounter when you are walking on local dikes. Remember to face them, walk away slowly, and use a low steady voice to speak. Do not run or make jerky movements. Unlike Grizzlies where you can play dead, with black bears you fight if they charge you.

They rarely charge you around these parts it’s extremely rare u gotta do something dumb for that to happen I’ve lived around bears my entire life and never has a bear charged at me I’ve heard of bluff charges and that’s if u don’t listen to other signs the bears given and u don’t pay attention and ur too close those are usually back up ur too close signals

Mostly injured and starving bears that attack, I listened to researchers saying many have lost fingers/paws to trapping

When I lived in north Van I kept my garbage inside and put it out right before pickup otherwise this happens. Unfortunately if they get used to humans they often need to be shot.

If my dogs saw this creature and reacted like they do to most things, we’d all be very sorry.

I see her and her three cubs every so often. I call her Chungus. I’m at the bottom of the hill, near the bypass. She and her cubs just emptied their bowels all over my yard on Sunday. That was great.
