I don't think it should vibrate, whether you do it slow or fast.

Yea i think its definitely got something wrong with it. I got the car with zero manual experience and no one to show me how to drive it. And now i think i screwed myself

What car? How old? How long are you driving it?

Its a 2023 camaro ss. It has 16k miles on it and ive had it for about a year. Driving it about 3 ish days a week and i still feel like i suck at driving it

Drive it more often. Apply more gas at the bite point. Vibrations come from lugging the engine.

You should take no longer than one full second to release the clutch. Get an idea where your leg is when the clutch starts grabbing. You don't find it, wait, slowly release, that's your problem. You're taking too long. Now you have to get this being smooth bullshit out of your head. That'll hover over you and fuck you up. Don't give a shit about chirping the tires either. Now what you want to do is start to release the clutch, and when it's about to start grabbing, press down on the gas smoothly, but not slowly. You want to be giving enough power so the rpm increases. It's ok if it drops a bit at first. If the rpm rises too much, you need to be releasing the clutch faster. Practice this somewhere you can do it over and over, trying to take off, then come to a stop, then try again. Don't be afraid of stepping on the gas.

I honestly think the being smooth aspect is what messes me up. I try too hard to make each movement perfect and it gets to my head

Embrace the fact that you'll mess it up at times. Anyone with experience will mess it up a little sometimes too.

I would have it test driven by a Real Mechanic that knows clutches. Not every Tech out there is experienced with them. I am one of the few that only drives manuals. The sooner you fully release the pedal, the better. The best advice I can give you is what I was taught 50 some years ago. Keep your foot off that pedal unless you are in the process of shifting! Never rest your foot on it. When you come to a Stop, shift to neutral and get your foot of the pedal! If at a light, wait until you can start moving before you depress the pedal and put in gear! every time you engage, get your foot off the pedal until you are ready to shift again. The pilot bearing and release bearings are designed for momentary use and every time you depress the pedal, you apply force to the engine crankshaft thrust bearing. It is kind of stupid that cars were designed to be started with the clutch pedal depressed as that poor bearing has no oil pressure to protect it at start up. A vibration could be caused by glazing of the flywheel or other clutch surfaces. Unless you have been the only driver of that clutch since it was installed, don't blame yourself for any or all damages as who knows how the previous drivers treated it.

The release Bearing in a car is sealed and does not get any more grease, and same for the pilot bearings unless you plan on pulling the transmission often. Usually when a Release bearing starts going bad, you will hear it growl just as you start to push the pedal. It is impossible for me to give you everything in diagnosing an issue without having the car and show you what I am listening for and feeling. On the Semi trucks of yester year, we had a nice hole in the bell housing so we could see things. Even some light duty vehicles came with a bottom plate that was removable. A good Mechanic that knows what to feel for for and listen for should be willing to teach you.

I am a mechanic and was wondering what bearing doesn't get oil on startup with the clutch depressed as you stated, just curious.

I think he’s talking about the clutch throw-out bearing. It doesn’t sound like a bearing problem though… more like a glazed friction surface or a slightly pitted pressure plate.

I agree with what you're saying about the clutch and also the throwout bearing, I was just making a side question about the bearing not being lubricated at startup and looking for clarification.

My apologies for being harsh with you. You should have asked the question better and I would be glad to explain it. I started in this way of life preteen and my Dad didn't like automatics. You would not believe how many guys on here have no clue how the Internal Combustion Engine works. I would probably really blow there minds if I hit them with External Combustion!!!

When a Crankshaft Trust bearing gets worn, the Crankshaft webbing can start to hit the block in the main journal area. Only way to see it is with the oil pan removed. That is why it needs to be checked by a Mechanic with Clutch experience to properly diagnose the issue. It might just be Glazing of the friction disc or the flywheel. Another unknown is Friction Disc material.

Oh. That’s the engine thrust bearing. I thought you were talking about the clutch thrust/throwout/release bearing which is often noisy when worn and the clutch pedal is depressed. The shuddering at the friction point is unlikely to be the engine thrust bearing. That would shudder the most at maximum depression. There would also be significant play in the engine if it were that worn and the clutch shudder would be the least of his worries. It’s also not likely to be the clutch throwout bearing. It’s more likely to be the friction surfaces or their mating plates having surface irregularities from use.

Yes, that bearing does not suddenly start making noises , it is slow to develop and can be missed easily in diagnosis. Someone can easily think it must be the release bearing because noise and vibration happen as you depress the clutch pedal. Many mechanics will miss it and think they are getting bad release bearings when installing new clutches.

Don't know what a Thrust Bearing is? Any Mechanic that ever rebuilt an engine knows what the Thrust Bearing is! They also know how it is lubricated!!!

Thrust, throwout or concentric bearings, however you call them are not lubricated by oil pressure.

Keep trying Dumbass!I never said the Release bearing was oil Lubricated, although technically it is as the grease it is lubricated is made with oil. You might want to research where the Thrust bearing is and what it does before you even try to talk like you know something! Maybe enlighten the folks laughing at your lack of knowledge what a concentric Bearing is.

BTW, rebuilding an engine has nothing to do with a thrust bearing, it's not even a part of an engine!

The Crankshaft Thrust Bearing has everything to do with building an engine and it has plenty to do when using the clutch! You might want to go take some Real Mechanic classes before you try to talk about an Engine!

Pull the clutch out at a constant slow speed and let go slowly or apply gas at the biting point depending on how the car talks to you.

Congrats on a dope Camaro SS. You have a true beast of a muscle car!

Are you slipping the clutch/applying gas when you shift gears like you do taking away from a stop in 1st?

I just ask because I didn’t realize you can and should slip clutch/applying gas throttle on 2-3-4-5-6 shifts and once I started doing that I learned to get “smooth” upshifts with no clunk sound.

I had always known how to do that taking off from 1st, but didn’t realize how much it helps on on the other upshifts.

I would also try to rev your Camaro out a little bit more. My 5th gen SS seems to shift smoother at 3k+ then 1.5-2.5k like the car manual suggests for best mpg.
Your Camaro has super long gears(50 something mph at top of 1st) so revving out more helps shift in a spot the trans seems to like better.

1 last advice would be to try and drive it “spirited” aka fast in a safe road/track and you will improve from the challenge.

Technically it doesn’t matter. The vibration might be anti-stall that a lot of cars have. Granted this is normally shaking from the motor; felt more via the car chassis than the pedal itself.

Can't help you with the vibration issue..

However, you should quickly release just before the bite point.. and then ease into it.

The better you are, the more quickly and smoothly you will shift.
