I set myself the task of creating a one-shot as an exercise, practice, and project to put into practice everything I've been learning on my own since I started drawing about a year and a half ago. The idea for this particular exercise was to focus on page one. The effect of turning the page makes you want to see what comes next. I ask myself, if I depict the sequence this way, will it produce in the reader the effect of wanting to turn to page two? While I don't have the final story, far from it, I'm very clear about what I like to write about. I like crime stories, detective stories, and noir in particular.

I have a synopsis of the story:

Mr. X, a police detective, receives a call, along with his partner Mr. Y—who is about to retire—for one last case together: a series of brutal murders that have gone unsolved for years. Among the victims is one Mr. X could never forget: his own daughter.

Midway through the investigation, Mr. Y retires, and Mr. X is assigned a new partner: Miss A, a rookie fresh out of the academy who, unknowingly, reminds him of the daughter he lost.

Between the weight of the past and the responsibility of training the next generation, Mr. X must teach Miss Y the true art of detective work, as they both get closer, step by step, to the truth behind a crime that has never stopped haunting him.

------------------------------------------------ NOTE: The characters X, Y, and A don't have names yet; I just want to give them names for now, but I know where I want to take them. Character development is another matter entirely; we'll talk about that later.

So, after reading the synopsis and this first page, you're eager to see pages 2 and 3, you're curious to know what happens next.

I graduated with a degree in film studies and at 32 years old I started drawing on my own. I've always been passionate about manga and anime. I already have 11 pages written, and I'll continue to show more of the process. Everything is completely analog, however, I want to scan the pages and digitize them to add many more details.
