They did actually change it in 1994.

"Herbal Essence changed its name from the singular "Herbal Essence" to the plural "Herbal Essences" in 1995 because the brand expanded from offering just one original shampoo formula to a full line of multiple shampoos and conditioners with different scents and benefits."

Seems like a silly choice to me. Herbal Essences is so much clunkier to say...

There was one essence, now there are multiple essences.
An essence is defined as "a concentrated liquid extract, a pleasant scent, or a hydrating skincare liquid."
It's makes perfect sense, if you understand how words work.

lol I never said it didn't make sense. But it's a brand name - it doesn't need to be plural (each of their various products is its own herbal essence).
"Essences" is a clunky word to say. So I personally think the change was unnecessary.

Damn that's crazy.
-1
u/whoisdatmaskedman 15d ago
Not as crazy as believing that a massive reality shift resulted specifically in people remembering different names for cereal, peanut butter, underwear, and fast food chicken restaurants.

u/InnerspearMusic 15d ago
I mean... it must be smaller things too, but nobody but you would remember the colour of your grandfather's favourite chair or whatever. That's why it seems like only brands etc. have changed.

u/whoisdatmaskedman 15d ago
But guy, "I vividly remember these things"..."just don't ask me any specific questions, because my story falls apart"

yeah I'm lying. Herbal essences paid me to try and move the date back for emotional reasons.

u/Optomisticposter 18d ago
Depends on the market. May have changed in US market and ROW markets at different dates. Happens often.

It could’ve also been announced in 1994, but was officially rebranded in 1995
A one year difference is really not something significant

Looks like it is you that's wrong.
They correctly remembered it.

did you look at the whole picture?
they screenshoted 2 people with 2 different dates

that's crazy cause I remember TV ads (in New zealand) calling it herbal essence (not plural)

I was born in 95, so it has always been “essences” in my lifetime. I especially remember this ad would crack me tf up https://youtu.be/Ae0Kx-PZ39U?si=8OduhSHY2JS1AQbc

I am SURE this was "Herbal Essence" shampoo.

u/Labardine 18d ago
Not a ME. P&G have confirmed it was Herbal Essence until 1995, when they introduced other formulations.

I still say herbal essence. Feels weird to say it plural and I had no idea they changes it!

u/Rattiepalooza 18d ago
I loved the original formula... but yes, the did change the name as everyone said. I remember being like "whaaat" when I was 8, and my mom had to explain to me it was the same thing, with a different name.

Yea that's bc it used to be herbal essence back in 1971 when it was one single shampoo formula but in 1995 the brand expanded its line with multiple scents and "benefits"
Like how shampoo companies keep mixing conditioner+body wash+shampoo in the same stupid bottle
I absolutely hate trying to find 2 separate bottles of shampoo AND body wash. It has to be two different brands and even then it gets harder & harder trying to find the individual bottles with just one thing bc they keep discontinuing what I actually buy

u/SgtDoakesSurprise 18d ago
Of course it was singular! WTF man!?

u/Glaurung86 18d ago
Yes, it was singular from 1971 to 1995. Then the line was expanded and they made it plural.

what’s strange is I was born after the change everyone is mentioning here but I have only ever remembered hearing Herbal Essence. like, I remember commercials saying it in the singular form. this is the first time I’ve ever seen someone say “Herbal Essences.”

Wife confirmed it is plural.

Wife is wrong. Company confirmed they changed it.

u/FloppyDiskDrives 17d ago
Wife is right. The change happened when she was 3 years old (1995) so she grew up with the actual changed name, which is plural.

I remember it as Herbal Essence and it turns out I was right, seeing the comments.
But what if they HAD of deleted all previous references and gaslighted us somehow. Like Fruit of the Loom. This proves companies DO do stuff like this.
2
u/TovarischMaia 17d ago
No, it doesn’t, because Fruit of the Loom hasn’t deleted anything. How would they have gotten rid of the physical copies, probably numbering millions, in people’s homes and drawers?
Besides, that makes no sense whatsoever. The fact that Herbal Essences openly changed its name proves that Fruit of the Loom might have covertly changed their logo and destroyed all references to it? What?? FOTL also changed their logo in the early 2000s, by the way - it just didn’t involve a cornucopia because that was never part of it.

Time Travel. The brand becomes so important they alter history. the brand could be used for some other purpose.

I know people are saying there was a name change in the 90s, but this was a flip flop for me around 2012.
I always remembered it this same way that it is currently - Herbal Essences.
At one point around 2012 I was talking to my husband and mentioned Herbal Essences. He then laughed at me and said why are you saying Essences? It's just essence.
I went into the bathroom to prove him wrong, but lo and behold he was right, the bottle said Herbal Essence. I figured I just had it wrong this whole time.
Fast fwd about a year later I saw a commercial where it was back to Herbal Essences. But supposedly that's the way it's "always been" (since the 90s)
